Here’s an analysis of the season finale and its implications.
Devil May Cry Season 2 Ending Explained
Were Dante and Vergil Able to Stop Argosax’s Rebirth?
Dante and Vergil could not prevent the reawakening of Argosax until the ritual had reached completion. Arius had invested years of effort in collecting the Arcana, which possessed the potential to awaken the God of Chaos and serve as a container for the god’s spirit. When the time came for the final step in the ritual to take place amid the unique hybrid solar eclipse, Arius succeeded in merging with the entity known as Argosax. Having been transformed, the monster soon grew strong enough to start consuming the life energy of humans, becoming a threat to both the earth and the Makai realms.
With that knowledge, they devised a risky plan at the last minute. Dante turned to Vergil, asking him whether Mundus had the power to overcome Argosax, and upon Vergil’s confirmation that he did, they opted to take advantage of their ruler by pitting him against the newly emerged demon. Their plan was simple yet risky: they had to create a gateway linking the world of Makai and Earth, through which Argosax would pass, thus forcing Mundus to fight him.

This job was given to Lady, whose duty was to quickly close the gate once Argosax crossed over. Unfortunately, everything went well during the first part of their plan when Argosax was pushed into Makai, but after that, things went terribly wrong when Lady could no longer hold onto Sparda’s sword. Though it was not possible for the brothers to fully stop the rebirth of Argosax, they were able to achieve their goal of stopping him from destroying both worlds. The only solution left to them was to pit two demon kings against each other.
What Happened to Arius and Argosax At the End of Devil May Cry Season 2?
Once Argosax entered the realm of Makai, he instantly came into Mundus’s sights, seeing the reincarnated demon as an immediate danger to his authority. Instead of giving him more time to strengthen himself further, Mundus acted quickly, and the fight itself was a one-sided match, clearly demonstrating the immense might of Mundus when compared to any of the demons that had been seen up until this point. Despite Argosax causing widespread havoc on Earth, he was swiftly defeated by Mundus in Makai.

Once Arius managed to fuse himself with Argosax, he sealed his fate as he would die along with the demon’s demise. Arius’ death coincided with the end of Argosax, as Mundus succeeded in destroying Argosax. Even before his death, Arius still believed that sacrificing people and their souls just to bring back one god would justify all the efforts he put into life. Arius was not remorseful about anything he did, feeling happy in the fact that he could have at least fulfilled some duty for Argosax during the time he had him under his command.
Who Really Killed Dante and Vergil’s Mother?
The most startling revelation of the final episode of Devil May Cry Season 2 is the real reason behind Eva’s death. For a long period of time in the series, Dante and Vergil held distinct views on the fate of their mother. It was because of this that Vergil had grown up to be an emotionally distant person. But when Dante meets Mundus in Makai, it turns out that Mundus had murdered Eva. In fact, Mundus had been twisting the truth throughout the years to mould Vergil into the ideal warrior under his control.

Eva was seen by Mundus as a point of weakness in the Sparda family because she was what made the brothers human. According to him, the brothers’ human nature would stop them from fulfilling their purpose as demons. By eliminating Eva, he felt that he would strip them of all feelings toward her and make the brothers accept their Makaian essence without question. His goal was not only about avenging himself upon Sparda; it was an emotional ploy designed to transform the twins into his weapons. The latter, especially Vergil, was particularly susceptible to his influence since he dealt with his grief through rage.
The discovery dramatically alters the way in which Dante and Vergil see their pasts and themselves. Dante does not allow Mundus to strip him of the memories that he holds dear about Eva and remains convinced that her love and humanity were qualities that helped to make her a strong character rather than a weak one. Vergil is far more disturbed by the discovery since he starts to question all that he believes about himself and his parents.

Were Dante and Vergil Finally Able to Resolve Their Differences?
However, for a short while, it actually appeared as though Dante and Vergil were making an effort to mend their broken relationship. As the season progressed, the brothers gradually stopped hating each other and started working together. Their realisation of the truth behind Mundus and the deceit behind their mother’s death allowed them to have a common adversary, which enabled them to connect once more on an emotional level. For Dante, at least, it was time to finally move forward with his brother rather than against him.
But their reunion becomes futile when they get to Makai. The two brothers may share the conviction that their nemesis, Mundus, needs to be brought down, but differ on the method for doing so. While Dante clings to his human essence and wants to head back to Earth and take action according to his plan, Vergil begins to feel that the way to attain power is by leaving behind all his emotional weaknesses. To get that strength, he believes, he must remain in Makai.

The reason why this last encounter between the brothers is sad is that both of them no longer hate the other one. Vergil never chose to kill his brother, even when he was given a chance to do so. He only incapacitated Dante, throwing him along with the amulet in order to ensure that Earth would remain closed to the demonic realm of Makai. This scene shows how much Vergil still loves his brother, but at the same time, they still have many differences between them in terms of emotions and ideologies.
Why Did Vergil Decide to Stay Behind in Makai?
The motivations behind Vergil’s choice to stay in Makai are a combination of revenge and self-definition. Upon discovering the circumstances surrounding Eva’s demise, he is filled with the conviction that “only those who have completely immersed themselves in demon energy can defeat Mundus.” He perceives his human essence as a limiting factor, which leaves him susceptible to experiencing sorrow and suffering. Staying with Dante in the human realm would mean that he is destined to wallow in those feelings, but in Makai, he would be able to build his strength.

At the same time, Vergil no longer views Makai simply as the antagonist’s land. Unlike Dante, who still identifies strongly with his fellow humans, Vergil starts recognising that Makai is actually a part of who he really is. He feels that Mundus has polluted the land and made it into a place of tyranny and fear. To Vergil, the defeat of Mundus is not only about avenging himself but also about reclaiming and controlling Makai’s future destiny. That is why he decides to remain behind rather than escape with Dante.
In spite of how cold it may seem, there is still an element of self-sacrifice involved with Vergil’s choice as well. He knows that if Dante stays in Makai, then both would be preoccupied with saving each other rather than concentrating their efforts on taking down Mundus. With Dante back in the realm of Earth and the portal sealed, Vergil takes up the burden alone. It becomes obvious through the finale of the game that Vergil does not turn into another Mundus, yet he chooses the dark path for himself willingly.
What Happened to Lady in the Ending and Who Is Her Father?
By the end of Devil May Cry Season 2, Lady’s story reaches a turning point as she finds out something unbelievable about her father. At some point during the season, Lady finds out from Baines that her father, John Arkham, is not dead but actually playing a vital role in what is happening behind the curtains. In another twist, using more footage from a laptop, she realises that her father is none other than the enigmatic Jester working within Mundus’ court.

Through his own experimentation, Arkham turned himself into a demon and subsequently evolved into Jester. At this point, he was linked to Darkcom and became a spy while pulling strings behind the scenes. In this way, there is no doubt that he was also responsible for bringing Lady into Darkcom and directing her down the path of violence and revenge, effectively pushing his own daughter to become an instrument of destruction. Most disturbingly, there are also suggestions that he was responsible for murdering Lady’s mother, Kalina Ann.
In the ending of Devil May Cry, Lady decides not to wait for Dante, who requests a meeting once more at the diner. On the other hand, she makes up her mind to go by herself to find her father and confront him. In this way, she proves once more how similar she is to Vergil, who was obsessed with avenging himself. Although Dante looks forward to some inner peace, Lady sees no other way but to face her father in order to gain the closure she desires. This is definitely a plot point that will lead to bigger things in the future; for example, her confrontation with Jester.
Will There Be Devil May Cry Season 3?
While Netflix hasn’t announced the third season yet, there are many hints that indicate the continuation of the show will be coming soon. Perhaps the most important storyline in the second season was Vergil’s showdown with Mundus in Makai. However, the finale ended before we could see how the two fought. As the main character had decided to fight Mundus on his own, the new season will likely deal with the question of his ability to win the fight.

On the other hand, Dante’s tale is far from complete. Following his expulsion from the realm of the dead, he learns that he was powerless to save his sibling from falling into a self-destructive spiral. There is a clear indication that Dante’s upcoming adventure entails going back to the demon world and rescuing his brother from the brink of madness before the quest for vengeance completely overwhelms him. In addition, Dante also knows that he lacks the required strength to confront Mundus and, therefore, the next season will see him growing more powerful.
The story of Lady is another key aspect which sets up Season 3 of Devil May Cry. It is with her decision to go after Jester that we set ourselves up for a personal vendetta and rivalry that involves the issue of betrayal within one’s own family, much like what had been seen with Dante and Vergil. It should be noted that the objectives and aspirations of Jester are still unknown, and thus, it may just be possible that he becomes the next main villain.
