Beyond being just another biography of a well-known public figure, this documentary turns into a profound and touching journey through pain, friendship, love, failures and successes from the perspective of a person who made millions of people laugh for decades.

In Netflix’s Marty Life Is Short, Martin Short is portrayed as a very human individual who is just crazy about entertaining people in this documentary. There is something very comforting in this portrayal of Short through this documentary. It is evident that there is an intimacy between Lawrence Kasdan and Martin, which brings out a sense of closeness that is felt by the viewer of the documentary.
The Marty Life Is Short documentary goes through all the important periods in Short’s life, starting with his beginnings in theatre and Godspell and going all the way to SCTV, Saturday Night Live, Hollywood movies, Broadway shows, and his success in Only Murders in the Building. The thing that I found surprising is how frank the documentary is about the topic of failure. As Martin himself pointed out multiple times in the documentary, the majority of his career consisted of projects that were not successful from a commercial point of view. It was really inspirational to hear him talking about his philosophy of “failure” so casually, without any bitterness in his voice.
Indeed, one of the most powerful messages that this Netflix documentary Marty Life Is Short has is that success does not necessarily mean high sales figures or accolades. Although Martin Short has not become an overnight success following the conventional formula for a successful comedic actor, the respect and admiration that he receives from his colleagues says it all. To see names like Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks mentioned offhandedly as part of his group of friends really says something about who Short really is. It should be noted that almost all of the celebrities who were interviewed in the film focus more on his kindness and generosity than on his success.
Not only does this movie contain great archival material and video clips, but they are wonderful and add to the authenticity of the whole experience. The best part for me was the behind-the-scenes video clips that showed Martin Short laughing with his friends at parties, during rehearsals, or even at family gatherings. There is a specific home video clip with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, which is so much fun and reflects the crazy atmosphere created by Martin.
After all, being Martin Short, one can count on this Netflix Marty Life Is Short documentary being amusing at all times. This can be anything ranging from interviews with Jiminy Glick, Ed Grimley bits or anecdotes from his SCTV days – always a humorous scene occurs before things get too emotional. In my opinion, Jiminy Glick is one of my favourites due to the character displaying Short’s surreal brand of humour. The documentary certainly reminds us just how daring Martin used to be in performance, which explains the sheer number of characters that turned out to be iconic in nature.

The aspect of the documentary that remained with me for the longest time was the emotions that were portrayed. The documentary mentions all the losses that Martin Short had to endure during his lifetime. These losses include losing his family members at a tender age, as well as losing his wife, Nancy Dolman. What I found particularly beautiful about this documentary is the fact that they do not only focus on the sadness but also bring out the happiness and stability that came with having her around.
On occasion, there was even a sense that this movie could have dived a bit further into Martin Short’s artistry or impact on comedy as a whole. With the director being so personally involved, there are moments when the movie steers away from criticising certain elements of his career. Those expecting a closer look at the development or techniques he used in comedy might be disappointed with how shallow the movie turns out to be in that respect.
However, it must be said that I was not bothered by this aspect of the documentary very much since the sincere emotions portrayed here make for its great advantage. There is something delightful about seeing a documentary about a celebrity that does not use any controversies or fabricated events to retain our interest in it, but instead focuses on celebrating a life full of humour, friendship and determination.
In the end, I felt oddly relieved. Ultimately, the film shows how life goes on, despite one’s own heartache and professional failures. Joyfulness, in its essence, may be seen as a form of resilience – and the film says that well.
