The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Jo Nam-hyung and written by Choi Ryong, 취사병 전설이 되다 stars Park Ji-hoon as Kang Seong-jae alongside Yoon Kyung-ho as Park Jae-young, Han Dong-hee as Cho Ye-rin, Lee Hong-nae as Yoon Dong-hyeon, Lee Sang-yi as Hwak Seok-ho and others. Based on the highly successful webtoon, Becoming a Cooking Soldier Legend, the show successfully merges elements of military training with fantasy gaming and culinary stories.
The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Episode 1 Recap
In Episode 1 of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier, Kang Seong-jae joins Ganglim military camp after successfully completing the training. While travelling to the camp with Master Sergeant Park Jae-young, Seong-jae falls asleep and reminisces about how hard he had to work before joining the military. After he lost his father, he worked hard by delivering packages and working in supermarkets to earn money for survival. Although he had a tough time, he managed to complete the training and became one of the most talented recruits that Jae-young ever encountered.

But all these assumptions change dramatically when Seong-jae goes through the psychological assessment test. Instead of being a part of the special group of trainees who have been rated highly during their psychological testing, Seong-jae is identified as one of those who pose serious challenges to military life and thus require close attention from the officers. The psychological reports point out that Seong-jae suffers from deep depression and even from a video game addiction. In addition, Jae-young learns about Seong-jae’s father’s recent death.
On the other hand, peculiar events start occurring with Seong-jae. Notifications with game-like features and missions, rankings, and windows that no one else can perceive show up before his eyes. Seong-jae keeps experiencing the hallucinations even when he talks to First Lieutenant Cho Ye-rin, who gets worried when she observes him zoning out multiple times. In addition, Seong-jae meets Sergeant Yoon Dong-hyun, the cook at the military kitchen, who prepares such terrible food that the soldiers dread eating. The soldiers’ extreme responses while eating make some of the most hilarious scenes in The Legend of Kitchen Soldier episode 1, particularly when Seong-jae tastes the seaweed soup made by Dong-hyun.

Everything changes when Company Commander Hwak Seok-ho finds out that Seong-jae’s family ran a restaurant in the past. Without second thoughts, he gives the trainee an order to do the kitchen chores even though all his subordinates advise against this decision. In the process of organising the pantry, Seong-jae starts seeing the strange system and acquires some skills associated with cooking. With its help, he manages to sort all the ingredients with unbelievable precision, uncovering some of the chef’s talents that have been previously locked inside him. His performance is noticed by Officer Lee Min-gu during the inspection.
In the last part of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier kdrama episode 1, the confusion worsens when Dong-hyun leaves the kitchen after yet another failure with breakfast. To their bad luck, Baek Chun-ik, who is the Battalion Commander, comes to check on complaints regarding the poor food quality in the base. In order to save his position, Seong-jae resorts to preparing seaweed soup with an unknown recipe that was given to him through the system. Without the availability of beef, he uses sea urchin roe, combined with a special ingredient suggested by his father’s teachings. While everyone enjoys the food, the episode ends on a cliffhanger as Baek Chun-ik suddenly faints after consuming the soup.

The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Episode 2 Recap
Episode 2 of The Legend of Kitchen Soldier starts with the consequences of the shocking incident that occurred in the kitchen. While the seaweed soup cooked by Seong-jae impressed the battalion commander because of its delicious taste, the secret ingredient that he used in it caused an intense allergic reaction in Baek Chun-ik, forcing the military staff to take him to the hospital. In the meantime, Seong-jae is being accused of the whole situation, while his culinary skills cannot be denied.

The penalty impacts Seong-jae and Dong-hyun alike. Company Commander Hwak Seok-ho concludes that Seong-jae needs to be moved from his current assignment in the kitchen to avoid future mishaps. Even though Seong-jae tries to act like it does not matter much at first, he soon finds himself impacted on an emotional level by the prospect of leaving, as cooking is the first activity that gave him confidence recently. Dong-hyun, on the other hand, is just as angry, but for different reasons, since Seong-jae’s departure would mean he had to do everything alone once again.

In the meantime, Cho Ye-rin keeps trying to know more about Seong-jae. The medical officer recognises the emotional problems of Seong-jae but finally decides that Seong-jae is qualified to continue serving in the military. Ye-rin sees how his meals bring joy and energy to the weary troops, contrary to those of Dong-hyun, which seem to demoralise the men. Hence, she becomes determined to protect Seong-jae from Seok-ho, who rejects any change to his transfer decision.
The tension starts all over again the following day, when Dong-hyun almost messes up breakfast again for everyone in the whole base. When the rice and soup turn out to be horrible, arguments begin inside the kitchen. Following the anger from Dong-hyun, Seong-jae silently applies the abilities of the secret system to fix the plates. When it comes to the time when the breakfast is served, the soldiers are astonished at how good it smells. Finally, the dining room is full of praise instead of grievances and pain.

The final scenes from The Legend of Kitchen Soldier episode 2 showcase Seong-jae and Dong-hyun trying one last time to convince Seok-ho to reconsider his decision. Both make an attempt to cook some pork cutlet and persuade the commander that Seong-jae has culinary skills and deserves to stay in the kitchen because of his influence on the soldiers’ moods, as mentioned even by Ye-rin Cho. However, Seok-ho is resolute about his decision and declines to eat their dish. It was at the moment when Seong-jae started to feel hopeless that the mysterious system intervened with a cold reminder that he had failed in his mission.
The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Episode 1-2 Review
Going into the Korean drama The Legend of Kitchen Soldier, I did not expect much from this series because, although it contains military and cooking aspects, I was prepared for a comedy. Nevertheless, the first two episodes were even more amusing than I could have expected. There is a unique combination of comedy, drama, and fantasy, which is presented in a very natural manner. It is obvious that the environment created for the characters is extremely chaotic, and at the same time, does not require much effort from them. Besides, there is an interesting gaming-like feature, which provides a progressive nature to the story.

Park Ji-hoon completely carries these first two episodes. His performance captures Seong-jae’s awkwardness, exhaustion, and loneliness in a way that does not make him look like a sad or weak character. However, he manages to be very funny when it comes to food. This series jumps from funny scenes to emotional scenes, and Ji-hoon acts perfectly well in both cases. This role is definitely one of the best he has played recently, since it lets him show vulnerability and humour at the same time.
However, the supporting cast also gets a lot of credit for this series since everyone leaves a memorable impression. For example, Lee Hong-nae creates the role of Dong-hyun by making him exasperatingly funny while being at the same time sympathetic despite his screaming and awful cooking skills. Han Dong-hee turns Cho Ye-rin into a warm, authoritative character who is among the few people trying to comprehend the true personality of Seong-jae rather than judging him. On the other hand, Yoon Kyung-ho contributes both humour and intensity to the character of Jae-young.

The things that I liked most in The Legend of Kitchen Soldier kdrama were the satisfaction one gets from watching cooking scenes. Even the simple act of fixing damaged rice and arranging food items can be exciting, as the drama views cooking as a sort of combat system. Cooking scenes have been shown with excellent cinematography and the fact that it is based on the idea of a fantasy game makes it visually engaging without overshadowing the dramatic element of the show.
The Legend of Kitchen Soldier Review: Summing Up
Currently, the kdrama The Legend of Kitchen Soldier has everything in its favour to emerge as one of the most entertaining series of the season. Not only does it manage to introduce an air of mystery associated with the system in the first two episodes, but it also manages to develop stakes surrounding Seong-jae’s longing to excel in something. As the pressure builds up inside the kitchen of the military and Seong-jae continues his efforts to prove himself, I have a genuine anticipation about how he will turn into a legendary kitchen soldier.
