A Bona Fide Killer Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Yoon Jong-ho and adapted from the webtoon by Yun, 유부녀 킬러 stars Kong Hyo-jin as Yoo Bo-na, also known as the legendary assassin Kingfisher. Jung Jun-won plays her husband, Kwon Tae-seong, while Lee Sang-yi takes on the role of investigator Lee Dong-jin. The supporting cast includes Sung Dong-il, Seo Jung-yeon, Moo Jin-sung, Ha Yul-ri, Heo Jae-ho, Lee Eun-saem, and others.
A Bona Fide Killer Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of A Bona Fide Killer begins on Christmas Day in 2011, where we are introduced to a young girl who has been living without her father for several years. Once he comes back, he seems to sincerely apologise, stating that all those years he spent behind bars made him feel remorseful about what he did. But it does not take long before his apology becomes empty, and the man violently attacks his daughter, saying that he used to want to murder her together with her mother.
However, before he manages to do any harm to her, he gets shot by a sniper’s bullet. The one who shoots him is the notorious assassin called Kingfisher, who takes justice upon himself against people who have avoided it. The lady who comes to see the girl is Bo-na, and she gives her a Christmas present: freedom.
In A Bona Fide Killer Ep 1, we then see Bo-na, fifteen years later, has completely changed her lifestyle. She has got married to a reporter named Kwon Tae-seong and has a little girl called Yul. Having been away from work for three years, Bo-na is about to resume working because her child Yul is old enough to go to school. Her calmness has made her seem like an ordinary mom, but it becomes clear that there is something unique about her through the things she does. Being able to respond quickly in dangerous situations and dealing with difficult situations with a lot of control show her special skills.
She does not let other mothers know what she does professionally and just tells them that she works in a small firm. She also helps out at Tae-seong Chicken, which is owned by her husband’s family. There are fears that the rent can rise suddenly, especially considering the fate of other businesses located in the neighbourhood. But Bo-na helps out quietly without letting others know that she is actually the owner of the building and has kept the rent low for the sake of her family members. Bo-na’s family thinks of her as an eccentric person but understands that she was orphaned during childhood.
In the meantime, Tae-seong gets a clue about illegal activities in Musan. In his pursuit, he gets very near Mr Bae, a man linked with criminal activities. Before Tae-seong could find the truth about the activities of the man, the car ahead of him blows up. The man is dead, and Tae-seong understands that this was definitely not an accident. From Tae-seong’s later investigation, it becomes clear that Mr Bae was involved in some drug-dealing activities. Finally, Bo-na goes back to Durumi Electronics, where the truth about her employment comes out.
It is clear that she is not just an employee in a small firm but a director who operates with an organisation that conducts assassinations in a careful manner. For instance, her first task after going back is to eliminate Hwang Min-ho. Working with her team members, Bo-na positions herself and shoots Hwang Min-ho from a distance. She completes her mission successfully and goes home to return to her family life. Nonetheless, A Bona Fide Killer episode 1 ends with two major issues. First, there are media reports about Kingfisher’s return. Second, Bo-na receives photos that show her when carrying out her mission as well as those of her family members.
A Bona Fide Killer Episode 2 Recap
The Episode 2 Of A Bona Fide Killer starts with the police investigation into the death of Hwang Min-Ho. This murder shows why Hwang Min-Ho has become a victim. Hwang Min-Ho was sentenced to jail after faking the death of his pregnant wife and getting her insurance money, but he did not spend much time in prison since he had recently come out of prison before he was killed. From the perspective of the creators of the Kingfisher organisation, the judicial system was not able to give him his rightful punishment. Investigators Lee Dong-jin and his partner Beom Seong-hoon discover the bullet and start reconstructing the assassination.
Kingfisher is already known to Dong-jin. The killer was involved in many cases of killing people, which makes this one particularly crucial. Nevertheless, there seems to be something unusual about the case, because the shooting took place during the day, and the type of weapon is not typical for the killer. In addition, Tae-seong is also involved in the investigation, as he is told by his editor to move his focus from the drug case to the comeback of Kingfisher.
However, he does not know that he should actually look for his wife in this case; there is only one thing that might connect those two lines together, as the Baby Shark sticker found at the crime scene is similar to that of Yul. At Durumi Electronics, the K-drama A Bona Fide Killer ep 2 provides information about other people who work within Bo-na’s operation. Each one has his own task. Ye-sol is responsible for making fake papers, Tae-min is in charge of weapons, while Dr Go assists them in making it look like a natural death. Bong-pal is their link with clients as well as ensures control over their operations.
It is these operations that have helped them make the death related to the Musan explosion look like an accident. The team does not just consist of assassins, but each one has their own skills. Oh Hyun-nam, who is another new character, is introduced into the plot. She knows everything about the use of poison and claims that she admires Bo-na. However, their relationship is very awkward from the start. Hyun-nam starts to question the regularity of Bo-na’s family life and even shows dissatisfaction with all the happiness that Bo-na has achieved. Bo-na is wary of Hyun-nam and tries to warn her to keep working without being obsessed with heroism.
It looks like Hyun-nam knows too much about Bo-na for her own good. The poison she favours is called Mist and is very potent and undetectable. The truth is revealed after receiving a message from someone who has information on Kingfisher. Tae-seong meets up with the person, not realising the real plan that is being made by Hyun-nam, who is making him her pawn to get Bo-na to do what she wants. Hyun-nam is really Seung-ah, the child whom Bo-na helped fifteen years ago. She entered Bo-na’s world to discover more information about her past life.
After poisoning Tae-seong, Seung-ah offers Bo-na a choice to either cooperate with her or allow her husband to die. Bo-na is not about to let this happen and drinks the poison herself, saying that if Seung-ah plans on killing Tae-seong, she will take him down with her. A Bona Fide Killer episode 2 ends with the collision of Bo-na’s past life and family in a deadly way.
A Bona Fide Killer Episode 1-2 Review
Korean drama A Bona Fide Killer’s first two episodes have proven to be fun combinations of crime and action elements with dark comedy and family drama aspects. First of all, I liked the way the plot was not too focused on making Bo-na a mystery character for the viewer. Instead, the drama quickly presents the dichotomy of two sides of Bo-na’s life and gives us a glimpse of how she moves from taking care of her family – cooking food and solving daily problems, to conducting her well-planned murder.
Kong Hyo-jin performs both parts effectively since she makes both Bo-na and her personality as a good mom credible. She acts so well in her role as a loving mom that her serene demeanour when she goes on assignments explains why Kingfisher is feared by all. I also loved Jung Jun-won as Tae-seong. As a detective reporter, he faces an obvious conflict of unknowingly looking for his own wife. The scenes involving their family moments are very amusing and entertaining, but the investigative part brings tension in all of the conversations. Even the way their relationship is developing makes the end of Episode 2 more emotional.
Lee Sang-yi’s Lee Dong-jin introduces an intriguing investigatory aspect into the plot. He knows the history of Kingfisher and realises right away that the current crime doesn’t fit in entirely with the assassin’s modus operandi. His investigation may turn out to be one of the most dangerous elements for Bo-na’s secret. Of all the secondary characters, Bong-pal of Sung Dong-il is quite a relaxing and entertaining character, and the employees of Durumi Electronics introduce some personality into the organisation. The various roles played by Ye-sol, Tae-min, Dr Go and others suggest that the assassinating process has been planned well. Ha Yul-ri’s Hyun-nam turns out to be the most dangerous newcomer in A Bona Fide Killer kdrama.
However, the first two episodes at times rush through the significant information. Much happens in a short while in the drama, and many people, their roles, and secrets are mentioned; thus, some members of the organisation are not given much attention. The program describes some details of the team’s work in an obvious way rather than letting the story develop more gradually. Nevertheless, kdrama A Bona Fide Killer manages to make things more exciting. When Seung-ah appears, she changes a person from Bo-na’s past into a potential threat for her husband and daughter, and when Bo-na drinks poison, she demonstrates how far she can go to save her family.
A Bona Fide Killer Review: Summing Up
On the whole, A Bona Fide Killer opening is rather amusing, the lead characters are appealing, and the idea of leading a double life adds a new, exciting dimension to the drama. Even though the plot can be a bit hasty at certain points and needs to elaborate on certain aspects of the supporting characters’ development, the climax adds the elements of suspense and risk that make the audience eager for more. With Bo-na becoming increasingly difficult to hide and Tae-seong being drawn into Seung-ah’s plans, I am excited to see what the future holds.
