Things get complicated when Sovieshu gets a request for his uncle to be pardoned since he once tried to take over the kingdom; Navier tells him that making this decision will only create complications in their reign. However, Sovieshu still believes that the solution lies in producing an heir. The discussion between the two makes one realise that a relationship built on trust is not spared from expectations as well.

On a hunt, Navier comes across a strange being moving below the ground. With the aid of a white bird, which seems to lead her, she escapes by luring the creature to the barrier which marks the edge of the forest. On the other hand, Sovieshu comes across some killers who want to take away a woman, and he rescues her.

The next day, however, Navier finds out that Sovieshu has taken a particular liking to Rashta. His ladies-in-waiting start to fear that the emperor is going to take a mistress. Sovieshu tells Rashta that she ran away from her abuser and pleads with him not to make her return. He consoles her and kisses her, and Navier realises that the enigmatic white bird actually has a letter from an admirer hidden inside it. The Remarried Empress Episode 1 concludes with two very contrasting things in Navier’s life – the start of her husband’s extramarital affair and a new relationship with a stranger.

The Remarried Empress Episode 2 Recap

In episode 2 of The Remarried Empress, there is a confrontation between Navier and Sovieshu regarding Rashta during dinner. Navier tells him that she cannot just let another woman enter the palace without her permission. Sovieshu says that he needs Rashta to be his mistress because she has done something to him which he has never felt before. He tells her that he still loves her, but the intensity with which he wants Rashta indicates that the marriage has become different now.

Sovieshu tries to liberate Rashta from the clutches of her previous owner, Viscount Lotteshu, and assigns her a magnificent chamber in the palace. He even manages to give her all the necessary papers which prove her freedom. But no matter how much Navier concentrates on getting ready for the New Year celebration, she fails to avoid Rashta. The mere presence of Rashta becomes especially painful because Sovieshu spends some time with her during Navier’s fertile period.

However, Navier get to know that Prince Heinrey from the Western Kingdom will be present at the coming celebration. She listens to her maids who tell her how charming and courageous he is. But what really draws Navier’s attention is the strange bird who delivers letters from someone who remains unknown to Navier.

The whole scenario gets even more complex with Lady Albani helping Rashta attain the noble status that enables her to officially become Sovieshu’s mistress. Navier is compelled to consent to the entire arrangement, and her first meeting with Rashta goes poorly because Rashta tries to act as if she is her sister. Navier hits her hand away, after which Sovieshu punishes her by putting her in jail. In the meantime, she is frustrated and upset, but the white bird brings yet another letter for her. At the end of The Remarried Empress Episode 2, Navier calls it Queen, and the whole process motivates her to concentrate on her duties.

The Remarried Empress Episode 3 Recap

In Episode 3 of The Remarried Empress, the identity of the anonymous letter writer becomes known. The name of the bird that Navier refers to as Queen is in fact Prince Heinrey, a man capable of turning himself into a bird to travel between countries. His assistant, McKenna, is worried about Prince Heinrey’s strange behaviour; however, Heinrey keeps on enjoying writing letters to Navier.

With the New Year festivities just around the corner, Navier gets the contract signed, making Rashta the mistress of Sovieshu. The contract imposes some limitations on Rashta and makes it known that her kids won’t be considered heirs to the throne. Even though Rashta does not like those terms, Lady Albani assures her that she can make her a noblewoman. Meanwhile, Navier manages to get Laura released from prison.

This episode also shows us more about Navier’s family, who send her a beautiful red dress and encouraging letters following news of the emperor’s mistress. It makes her cry because she knows that despite her deteriorating marriage, there are those who love her. Soon, the Western Kingdom delegates arrive, and Navier meets Heinrey for the first time. The two have a delightful conversation, without knowing how much they already know about each other.

At the end of The Remarried Empress Episode 3, during the performance of the New Year’s dance, Sovieshu surprises everyone when he dances with Rashta instead of Navier for his first dance. This act causes the empress to feel humiliated before everyone in court, but Heinrey offers her a flower and asks her to dance with him. It turns out to be the most beautiful dance of the night, as Sovieshu watches from a distance in anger. For the first time, Navier feels that there is someone around her who cares about her.

The Remarried Empress Episode 4 Recap

Episode 4 of The Remarried Empress starts from where the previous episode left off and continues with the dance between Navier and Heinrey, whose performance ends up being a hot topic of discussion amongst the guests of the royal family. Heinrey is adamant about not allowing the emperor’s actions to spoil the time that Navier is having. When Sovieshu tries to join Navier again, he is so engrossed in hearing Rashta cry in the corner that he leaves the empress alone.

Navier goes back to her secret garden hideaway, where Queen comes to console her. While Navier can change into a bird, so can McKenna, who tries to persuade Heinrey to rejoin the party, yet fails to convince him. The couple keeps exchanging notes about their true selves as well as making a bet on Queen. Heinrey’s infatuation with Navier is hard to ignore now, even though he claims it’s just a joke.

Lady Albani, on the other hand, tries to control the events revolving around Rashta. While she prepares a feast for the new lady, her main motive behind it is to isolate Navier. In a meeting between Navier and the ministers, she comes to know that Heinrey can be the next king of the Western Kingdom since his elder brother has no heirs to his throne.

But even before he sees her face to face, Rashta visits Heinrey and tells him she is his mysterious pen pal. Everyone is cheering around them, while Navier faces another awkward situation at the end of the episode.

The Remarried Empress Review

I would have to admit that I am totally head-over-heels about the Korean drama The Remarried Empress until now. Just by watching the first four episodes, I can easily comprehend why this drama adaptation became so popular. It is not just the story alone that made me fall in love with the show, but the whole process of watching the show. The sets, costume design, camera shots, framing, etc., everything makes it feel so grand and expensive. The interiors of the palace and ball scenes are painted in a way that I genuinely find myself paying attention to the visuals as much as the story.

The whole aesthetic is as if the beauty of Bridgerton has been taken and put into a world of royal fantasies. There is so much admiration for the production design because it manages to create a world that is enchanting while retaining all the elegance of the original narrative. The part that I particularly love is when Navier’s facial expressions are captured by the camera.

The costumes are lovely, and the actors all look fantastic; it becomes hard to pay attention to what is going on at times! The bird scenes are one more thing I really like because they bring a little something extra to the whole fantasy element of the film. Some of the visual effects are flawed in some of the bird scenes, but nothing has dampened my experience. It is all absolutely stunning, and the cinematography is definitely one of my favourites out of the first four episodes.

Shin Min-a is wonderful as Navier. With the elegance, poise, and inner strength she possesses, it is easy to understand why she commands respect in the entire empire. My favourite thing about her character is the fact that despite being humiliated by Sovieshu, she manages to stay calm. There is no need for her to yell or give a speech to demonstrate how much he has hurt her inside. It is only during her time alone, especially when Laura gets thrown in prison or when she withdraws into the garden, that the other side of a lady who has been strong for the entire world emerges.

Ji-hoon Ju makes Sovieshu such an extremely frustrating character. He behaves as though he can get anything he wants while Navier stands by his side. He keeps on defending Rashta even when the choices he makes affect the empress in a negative way.

Rashta, played by Lee Se-young, is yet another performance worth mentioning despite the fact that I have to acknowledge my frustration with this character. Her actions toward Navier seem quite manipulative, particularly the way she acts as if she and Navier are sisters, only to break down emotionally when Navier rejects her. I wonder what part of her actions is dictated by her past and what by her increasing thirst for power.

And then you have Lee Jong-suk as Prince Heinrey. Really, I don’t know how to begin, as he is just the whole thing. The easy-going charisma, the small gestures, and even the smirk make him such an interesting character. It seems like he doesn’t have to do much to take over the screen, and I can already see why Navier’s ladies-in-waiting like him so much.

The letters written by Heinrey and Navier are among my favourite aspects of the series as it lets their relationship progress gradually before they get to know each other. The dance between them is also extremely enjoyable, following the continuous departure of Sovieshu from Navier, making her feel unwelcome. Heinrey’s growing fondness for her leaves me anticipating their future relationship development.

The Remarried Empress Episode 1-4 Review: Summing Up

Overall, as an adaptation, I think that the K-drama The Remarried Empress is one of the most successful ones that I have ever seen. It is really nice to me that the drama makes some attempts to be creative in relation to the original story. The Victorian-style look of the drama, casting, and the presentation of the palace politics make it a very interesting and thoughtful adaptation.

Already from the first four episodes, we have received a lot of drama, romance, and intrigue, which made me hooked on the series. In particular, with the appearance of Rashta as Heinrey’s secret correspondent, I am looking forward to seeing how Navier and Heinrey’s relationship will develop, and what kind of reaction we will receive from Sovieshu.
