The Greatest Review: Directed by Stacey Muhammad, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, Ben Watkins, A.V. Rockwell, Craig Siebels and others. The Prime Video’s eight-episode biography drama stars Jaalen Best as Cassius Clay, the young boxer who would eventually become Muhammad Ali, alongside Omari Hardwick as his father, Cassius Clay Sr., Dana Gourrier as his mother, Odessa “Bird” Clay, and Kai Parham as his brother, Rudy Clay. Giovanni Ribisi plays trainer Angelo Dundee, Joel Keller appears as Chris Dundee, Amin Joseph portrays Sonny Liston and others.

The Greatest Review

Prime Video’s The Greatest starts in 1960 when Cassius Clay comes back to Louisville after getting an Olympic gold medal in Rome. Though his success wins him many things, including a professional career, he soon realizes that it is not going to be easy for him to become a professional boxer. Cassius faces many obstacles in his personal life, from the troubles within his family to the struggle to get into the hands of rich businessmen. Racial discrimination also plays its part in this saga. While training under Angelo Dundee and dealing with the tough Sonny Liston, Cassius gets a clear idea about himself due to his involvement with the idea of Islam and how it was changing him beautifully.

The part of this biography which I find particularly interesting is the way the Prime Video series The Greatest does not portray Cassius Clay’s winning of the Olympics as the start of an easy ride on the road to boxing fame. Rather, it highlights the amount of things he needs to understand about himself, his family, and the world he wants to achieve fame in. This biography becomes very personal as compared to other biographies which just narrate one famous bout after another.

Jaalen Best is the key reason why this series is so successful. The role of Muhammad Ali is a very serious challenge since people already know how this role was played by Will Smith in the movie that was nominated for Oscars. However, Jaalen Best manages to give the character his own identity without any reference to the performance of some other actor.

What I liked in particular is how the confidence is tied into his insecurities. Ali can be extremely confident on the surface, but with regards to his father, he shows a far more vulnerable side. The moment where Senior hits Odessa, and Ali tries to confront him about it, you can tell it is very personal for him. It is not just that his mom got beaten up; it is also that the person who shaped him could possibly be someone he does not want to be.

Omari Hardwick certainly adds layers to Senior. It is difficult to admire the character when he ruins people’s lives through his alcoholic tendencies and abusive attitude. Nevertheless, one of the things that make Senior a rather conflicted figure is his pride in the accomplishments of his son along with his desire to control his life and decisions. The point becomes extremely relevant when Ali begins to make his choices on his own.

Dana Gourrier is as significant as Odessa Clay. It was refreshing to see that she is not only portrayed as the supportive mother who thinks her son is capable of doing anything. Dana Gourrier has her own worries about boxing, duties of her own and her own motivations to protect her family. Negotiating a contract of her son’s management is an excellent illustration of her contribution to Cassius’s future.

Another character who became close to me was Rudy. The relationship between him and Cassius provides some of the most emotional parts of the show, particularly when the two of them start discovering their faith. Rudy is not just devoted to his older brother, but he becomes somebody Cassius could rely on, especially after making choices that would make him feel alone.

Angelo Dundee played by Giovanni Ribisi is one of my favorite characters in the movie series. With Ali  being tortured by the hard training tactics of Archie Moore, it becomes evident that what he requires is somebody who knows him well enough, not just some disciplinarian.

The trainer understands that Ali’s arrogance and unorthodox manner is not a flaw but something that makes him unique. It is one of the most enjoyable aspects of this movie because it demonstrates the value of a good trainer who helps an athlete realize himself.

In addition, I enjoyed how the Prime Video’s The Greatest series uses the increasing fame of Ali to illustrate the shifting goals of Mohammad Ali. As Sonny Liston beats Floyd Patterson, Ali feels extremely angry since Mohammed Ali considers that he has missed the opportunity to be the youngest heavyweight champion. It is here where Dundee advises him to aspire to become the greatest.

The biography drama The Greatest is at its best when it makes the connection between the boxer and the world that surrounds Ali during that era, such as the experiences of segregation that he faces, his developing fascination with Malcolm X, and his adoption of the Nation of Islam, thus making him an increasingly resolved character.

In particular, I really liked the fact that his religious awakening is not perceived as just another professional hindrance. Conflict before the Liston fight makes him realize what he stands for, even though defending those values can mean a living for others. And his refusal to deny his convictions is one of the strongest illustrations of how he develops.

Even so, there are some scenes that the pacing was a bit uneven, but the visuals are definitely good because the costumes, the music, and the boxing scenes really bring back the 1960s era.

Prime Video The Greatest Review: Summing Up

Overall, the 2026 The Greatest series is an engaging biography since it recognizes that there is more to the person being profiled other than the achievements Mohammed Ali has been famous for. While there was more I could have seen in other stories, the performance of Jaalen Best is worth watching
