Who Was Yeon-joo and Why Was She Using Hyeok-jun?

To start with, Yeon-joo first introduces herself to Hyeok-jun as a worker for a workers’ compensation service. Yeon-joo mentions that those who work for the Spider Staffing Agency have either returned with serious health issues or disappeared. During her investigation, she meets Hyeok-jun, whose story helps her gather information about the agency’s practices. However, her real identity becomes a big revelation at the end of the series. When Ji-yoon talks to the head of the agency about the risks involved in his brother’s job assignments, he says that the organisation Yeon-joo represents was disbanded in the 1980s.

Furthermore, he states that she is not human but a monster from the other world. It becomes clear after looking at the flashback. In fact, forty years ago, Yeon-joo worked in a textile factory and was able to confront the men who were exploiting her co-workers. After the men started beating up the women, Yeon-joo was hidden by her friend in a cupboard. When she emerged from there, Yeon-joo found herself in the future forty years later. It became clear why Yeon-joo knew all the information about the doors in the other world.

However, her real identity does not mean that she becomes fully evil on the spot. She really assists Hyeok-jun in searching for the agency and then directs him to the portal through which he will find his missing father. Moreover, she assists Hyeok-jun in crossing over to another world in order to find Ji-yoon. In addition to this, she keeps her secrets from Hyeok-jun and makes him trust her, regardless of who she really is. It gets more complex at the climax of the story when she believes that it is better to destroy the human world than allow workers to die for the agency.

Following this, the owner of the agency shoots her, but she regains consciousness and pulls the owner into the other world. Thereafter, she apologises to Hyeok-jun for lying to him and lets the black smoke drag her off too. Thus, Yeon-joo is not a villain manipulating Hyeok-jun for his own selfish purposes. She helps him because she has legitimate reasons for doing so; however, she does not hesitate to sacrifice the whole world to reach her end, which goes to show how far she is ready to go in order to fulfil her aims.

Does Hyeok-jun Find His Missing Father, and Is He Able to Bring Him Back?

Searching for his missing father, Byeon Min-su, is among the key motivations for his risky projects. When he found out that his father had kept an old black book in which he was writing about taking risky assignments from the staffing agency, he started to doubt that his father had vanished after accepting such a job.

At the construction site, Hyeok-jun gets to know about a worker, Byeon, who used to be part of the construction gang, from the foreman. The foreman ultimately confirms that the worker was Byeon Min-su, but clarifies that he did not die. He went out through a door, but never came back. The knowledge helps Hyeok-jun to have hopes that his father may be alive somewhere in the other world on the other side of the border between the two worlds. With the help of Yeon-joo, he goes to the amusement park, where there is a door to the other world.

At last, he finds his father, but he can’t take him back with him. Having escaped from the horrifying ordeal of the haunted house, Hyeok-jun enters the door of the other world. The owner of the agency warns him that letting the other world enter their world would mean destroying everything. In the midst of all the chaos, Hyeok-jun is dragged into the door and wakes up in another room where Min-su sits and reads his old black diary.

The shadow of Min-su casts a monstrous shadow of a being with huge claws, implying that there must have been a change in Min-su’s state of being during his stay there. Min-su gives Hyeok-jun his earnings and asks him to take the money back to the family, and he firmly insists that his son leave without him. While there isn’t an explanation for why Min-su cannot go back, his decision implies that Hyeok-jun cannot bring him back home. Eventually, at the end of Dead-End Job, Hyeok-jun finds himself back in the human world, as Ji-yoon drags him out of the abyss.

What Happens to the Spider Staffing Agency?

After getting to the new world with Ji-yoon, Mr S finally gets to meet up with Hyeok-jun and Yeon-joo. He kills Yeon-joo and tells Hyeok-jun not to open the door because the creatures and powers from the other side can come and destroy the human world. In addition to that, Mr S justifies the actions taken by the agency by saying that all the sacrifices made in their jobs have saved the human world from an even bigger catastrophe.

This rationale is vehemently contested by Hyeok-jun. Hyeok-jun contends that the workers took up the job opportunities due to the desire for survival and betterment, and not because their lives were meaningless. When the owner of the agency draws a parallel between Hyeok-jun’s argument and his father’s philosophy, Hyeok-jun loses his temper and opens the door. The owner tries to close the door, but the wounds inflicted upon Yeon-joo via the gunshots heal, and she strangles him with her bare hands and drags him into the other world.

The disappearance of the owner of the agency doesn’t signify the collapse of the Spider Staffing Agency or the threat to it. When Hyeok-jun and Ji-yoon come back to the human world, the siblings find out that the world hasn’t been ruined yet, and their family starts rebuilding their life. The agency building was demolished and redeveloped in time, meaning that its previous activities will be discontinued. Nonetheless, the final scene questions this assumption.

Hyeok-jun gets a call informing him that the Spider Staffing Agency has offered him the position of manager. The previous owner has left a recording telling him that there has been an imbalance between the two worlds and that it is up to Hyeok-jun to deal with this imbalance or to just forget about it and live his life. However, the Dead-End Job ends without Hyeok-jun answering. Thus, the previous owner of the company is effectively taken out of the equation, but the function of the company itself and its supernatural issues still remain.

What Happens to Hyeok-jun and Ji-yoon at the End of Dead-End Job?

Hyeok-jun and Ji-yoon make it through the climactic battle, but their adventure in the other realm raises hard questions for them regarding their families and the kind of future they wish to have. In the climax, Hyeok-jun goes ahead and opens the door despite the warning from the agency owner, thinking that his goal was to locate his father and stop the agony of the agency. But as fate would have it, he finds himself in the other realm where he meets Min-su once more. However, Hyeok-jun’s father declines to follow him back, leaving a very hard question for Hyeok-jun.

Ji-yoon and the owner of the company go into the haunted house to confront the monsters living in the amusement park. While the owner tries to knock Ji-yoon out, she becomes an important figure who helps her brother save his life. Hyeok-jun gets dragged towards the darkness, but Ji-yoon saves him and pulls him back. The two close the door, keeping other black smoke out of their world. They leave the place as fireworks explode in the air and news of a fire breaks out in the amusement park.

After all of this, Hyeok-jun, Ji-yoon, and their mother relocate to a new location, allowing the family to begin anew. Hyeok-jun returns to job applications in contrast to his former dependence on the dangerous tasks offered by Spider Staffing Agency. He learns from his own experience that taking an opportunity for a better life blindly, without being aware of its implications, may be paid for with much more than just money.

Another thing that happens is that Hyeok-jun sees a woman at a bridge prepared to throw herself into the water. Realising that this desperation brought him there before, Hyeok-jun stops her and somewhat clumsily attempts to persuade her to change her mind. The woman thanks him and leaves. This event reflects how Hyeok-jun has changed his views on people who find themselves trapped by their situation through his experience.

Nevertheless, his regular life will soon be disturbed by a series of strange fires, and a weird substance was found at all places where the fires occurred. Soon after that, he gets a chance to become the manager of Spider Staffing Agency, thereby creating uncertainty regarding his future. Nevertheless, Hyeok-jun and Ji-yoon succeed in returning to their world despite facing tough times.

What Does the Ending of Dead-End Job Signify?

The ending of Dead-End Job clearly emphasises the exploitation of desperate people and dangers arising from using these people’s desperation as a chance to earn money. Hyeok-jun agrees to do the work offered by the company due to the massive debts that he owes. He has nothing better to do and thinks that the high salary will solve all of his problems.

It is also clear that overcoming the threat that is present does not resolve the underlying issue at all. While Hyeok-jun and Ji-yoon do manage to lock the door and stop the black smoke from escaping, strange fires and mysterious substances arise in other places within the city. This means that the disruption of peace between the worlds persists. The proposal to make Hyeok-jun the new manager of Spider Staffing Agency only emphasises this fact. It leaves him with a decision of either accepting the blame or turning a blind eye to what has happened.

The ambiguity surrounding this question means that the finale is no longer about victory, but about the heavy responsibility of making choices when an entire flawed system persists. It is clear that Hyeok-jun is someone who cannot accept desperate people as dispensable, but the question of whether he will be able to bring about any change from within the agency is still in doubt. The fact that Dead-End Job ends means that survival is just the start of the problem.

What Does the Dead-End Job Mid-Credit Scene Mean?

The mid-credit scene of Dead-End Job introduces Ji-yoon, who is notified via a text message that her application for employment at Kyungil Group has been approved. This is noteworthy since the Kyungil Group has been mentioned several times in relation to other sites such as the textile factory and amusement park. The latter two sites have been linked to disturbing occurrences, and the amusement park turns out to be the venue of the climactic battle involving Hyeok-jun, Yeon-joo and the agency owner. Through this revelation, it has been established that Ji-yoon will join an organisation that has been linked to several disturbing occurrences in the previous episodes.

The scene does not establish how much Ji-yoon knows about the involvement of Kyungil Group in all these events and what her new job will be like. Being hired for the new job can bring Ji-yoon closer to the individuals/operations involved in the weird phenomena and can give her an opportunity to discover more of the mysteries that Hyeok-jun had been investigating.

At the same time, the scene can be viewed as a comparison between the two siblings and their uncertain futures, since whereas Hyeok-jun is offered a job at Spider Staffing Agency, Ji-yoon is getting ready to start working for Kyungil Group. Thus, the siblings might become linked to organisations playing an important role in the supernatural phenomena of the series. However, the mid-credit scene doees not tell viewers what will happen next and leaves room for Dead-End Job season 2, in which Ji-yoon’s new job will become important.
