Ziam, which is 1 hour and 36 minutes long, is a Muay Thai-infused zombie survival story in a world where climate crisis and inequality have reshaped everything.

Ziam Movie Recap

In Ziam, the world is plagued by widespread famine caused by global warming. While the world is starving, Thailand appears to be clinging on, gratefully courtesy of a businessman called Mr. Vasu, who boasts of finding a secure source of fish to feed people. But there is inequality under the surface. The prosperous live in comfort while the poor survive on insects and engage in daily struggles. Promises of stability by the government do not equate to what is happening on the ground.

Singh, a young boxer, is a truck driver for Mr. Vasu, transporting food on dangerous roads. His girlfriend, Rin, is a doctor who works at a hospital where Mr. Vasu’s wife is being treated. Rin wants Singh to leave and come to Chiang Dao with her so they can begin life together again. Singh makes promises but keeps putting them off—still tied by duty and compulsion.

Trouble begins when Mr. Vasu feeds his wife fish liver in an attempt to treat her. He also persuades the board of his company that the fish is harmless. But when one of his men, Mr. Purich, eats the fish and dies, only to come back as a zombie, all hell breaks loose. Infection spreads rapidly in the hospital. Singh rushes to save Rin, while Rin also takes in a young boy called Buddy, whose mother, Mink, has just been infected.

What Caused the Zombie Outbreak in Ziam?

The zombie outbreak in Ziam appears to begin when Mr. Purich, Mr. Vasu’s trusted man, eats fish liver and dies immediately, only to return as a zombie a short while later. Even though the film never says it, all the indicators point to the fish as the source of the virus. Mr. Vasu had been feeding this so-called “safe” fish to his sick wife and even managed to get board members to eat it.

Before long, the mayhem begins, beginning within the hospital. Rin also suspected the fish, warning others and questioning. So, even though we don’t witness the virus begin, the fish sold by Vasu’s company is the most likely source. It shows how desperation and blind trust in authority can lead to disaster.

What happened to Mr. Vasu?

Mr. Vasu began as a hero to the nation, a man who fed others when the world was hungry. But in life, destruction was the result of his pride and inability to take the blame. He fed his wife the liver of the fish and convinced everyone that it was okay, even after warning signs. When his wife could not be saved and the hospital was brought to chaos, Mr. Vasu remained behind with her. Both of them became zombies, proving that money and power cannot save a person from the result of their own actions.

Who Survived in the End?

In the final scenes of the Zombie movie Ziam, we see that Rin and Buddy escape from the hospital in the helicopter hired by Mr. Vasu for Rin. Singh, her boyfriend, stays back to divert the zombies and provide them with some time. It seems he gets killed in the explosion caused by the military when they attack the infected hospital. But towards the end of the movie, we understand that Singh is alive; he had escaped from the explosion by hiding in a water tank on the roof. So finally, all three of them, Rin, Buddy, and Singh, are safe, even though they get separated.

What Does the Ziam Ending Mean for Rin and Singh’s Future?

The ending of the Thai film Ziam is quietly moving. Rin returns to her hometown with Buddy, still grieving for her loss. Even she attempts to take off her ring but fails to do so, as if she thinks that he is alive. That scene shows how strong their love is, even in silence. When the film presents Singh alive, it gives hope that their lives will again intersect. That ending suggests that if there is to be a Ziam 2, Singh will fight his way back, not just to be reunited with Rin, but to learn the truth about what occurred with the outbreak and to punish those responsible.

Thai movie Ziam is now streaming on Netflix.
