Netflix film My Dearest Señorita is set in Spain around the late 1990s. We are introduced to Adela, a character depicted as an introvert and a shy individual. Her personality is shaped by her upbringing in a very conservative and religious home, where she grew up under the supervision of her mother. Time seems to have frozen for her since she spends her days going to Sunday school, helping out with chores around the house, and staying within the confines prescribed for her. Nevertheless, despite all these restrictions, life appears peculiar to her.
The hidden tension is revealed further through her socialising. She is faced with an uneasy situation when it comes to her social interaction with the local man, whom she feels is socially appropriate, and an emotional one with the other woman, whom she does not really comprehend. These scenes are important since they gradually pave the way for the film’s climactic revelation.
Everything changed after Adela learned about the actual condition of her body, that she was born with intersex organs and that her family members were keeping her unaware about it throughout the years. Though the realisation itself becomes a surprise for her, she loses everything she believed in. A huge portion of the film is dedicated to the portrayal of Adela’s confusion, betrayal, and rage. There are some particular instances in the movie which are exceptionally significant owing to their capability to raise questions over Adela’s as well as her family’s actions.
The best thing about the movie that makes it very effective in Netflix’s My Dearest Señorita is the emotional truthfulness depicted in it. There is no restriction in showing how Adela feels while comprehending her own reality. At times, especially in the beginning, one can relate to her emotionally. From being uncomfortable in social situations to the conflict she feels during her interactions with members of her own family, the film depicts an authentic portrayal of emotions.
In addition, the Spanish movie My Dearest Señorita is successful in demonstrating the extent to which society and religion can influence one’s idea of oneself. Nevertheless, the problem that could arise from the film could be the tendency of the story to overexplain everything. The story does not give credit to the understanding of the viewers of emotions and the subtexts. For instance, when Adela realises that she is sick, there are many scenes that are dedicated to this fact, making the scene look more like an educational lecture.
Elisabeth Martínez offers a powerful performance as the character Adela. In fact, the sense of confusion and transition is strongly presented in Adela. This is because the real sense of the message in the film comes across in a non-verbal manner by means of facial expression, especially at moments when Adela finds herself torn between her own feelings and the external expectations of society.
The secondary characters also contribute to the complexity of the narrative, although they are not always developed to their full potential. For instance, Anna Castillo is a warm and complex character who provides a lot of information about Adela’s personal life. Paco León can be seen as a comforting and yet somewhat conflicting figure within the life of Adela. In addition, the presence of other people in the film helps Adela understand her own identity.

In terms of visuals, the late 90s atmosphere is portrayed convincingly without going into any over-the-top stylisation. The emphasis on characters and character development only helps the film, but the pace at times might seem a little too slow due to its focus on introspection. This makes it more intimate, but unfortunately, also repetitive.
The best part about the Netflix Spanish film My Dearest Señorita is the way it portrays the themes of community and acceptance. As Adela goes out into the world beyond her sheltered space, she encounters various people who show the different aspects of her personality. In these moments, the audience gets to feel the warmth and positivity that adds to the intensity of the emotional scenes. The film portrays the message that one’s identity should never be boxed up but rather lived through.
On the contrary, the very thing that makes the film appealing and yet restrains it is the fact that it is presented in a contemporary way. While this makes it relatable and universal, it can be seen as simplistic and even superficial. What was done well in the earlier version of the plot is that it had a hint of subtlety, while the current version does not bother with it.
Netflix My Dearest Señorita Review: Summing Up
My Dearest Señorita, as a whole, is a tale of defying society’s conventions and expectations, defying imposed identities, and defying fear of the unknown. This movie is about making one’s own way through life, even in light of an uncertain future. While it does not necessarily have a balance between story and message, the motivations behind this movie are extremely commendable. What makes this movie emotional is mainly Elisabeth Martínez’s excellent acting.
