Netflix movie Swapped starts with a flashback where we see a young Ollie, one of the smaller animals which depend on external sources for their survival, meeting Ivy, who is from a bigger and dominating avian species. This seemingly harmless incident quickly escalates into a larger dispute. As seen by Ollie, who unintentionally presents Ivy to the food source on which he relies, a chain of events is triggered. Eventually, Ivy’s species begins consuming this resource in large quantities, causing an imbalance in nature, thus generating a disagreement between the two groups.
The effects of this event, which occurred during their childhood, become apparent throughout the film’s progression. The two species have become sworn enemies, and Ollie is left with the responsibility of realising that he had played a role in fostering this enmity. This emotional aspect of the plot can certainly be viewed as one of the most effective parts of the film since it provides motivation for Ollie.
A dramatic turn of events occurs when Ollie and Ivy come together in stressful situations, discover an unusual magic plant, and end up swapping bodies. The plot of Netflix’s Swapped is introduced here. Ollie suddenly finds himself living the life of a creature that he has been fighting against all along, while Ivy finds herself inhabiting the body of Ollie in its vulnerability and weakness.
Of course, there are many examples of how body-swap tales have been used successfully as a means of exploring empathy, and the animated movie Swapped does make great use of this concept. The process of witnessing Ollie having to adapt to the flying capabilities of Ivy, or vice versa, provides some interesting entertainment value. It is quite enjoyable to see how characters have their preconceptions shattered due to their firsthand experience. However, despite the soundness of the concept, sometimes its application may not be all that satisfactory.
Among the most prominent aspects of the Netflix animated film Swapped is the nature of the movie. The world-building is absolutely impressive, with the presence of many different hybrid animals as well as beautiful scenery. One can see such creatures as a tree wolf and different birds. There is a lot of attention paid to the construction of the movie universe, which makes it even more interesting when combined with the plot. It is possible to find many scenes where the landscape is truly fascinating, especially when it comes to flying or a shot over the valley.
Another factor that needs consideration is the acting performances, which give a different dimension to the film. Michael B. Jordan portrays the role of Ollie effectively; hence, he makes him endearing even though the character has some stereotypes. Juno Temple is perfect for Michael B. Jordan as she plays the role of Ivy impressively. She is confident but also sensitive at the same time. Their relationship is very crucial during their body swap duration.
However, the most surprising actor turns out to be Tracy Morgan, whose character is known as Boogle. He provides humour and surprises in the animated film. Whenever the film appears to be boring, he creates suspense that captivates the viewers’ attention. This simply shows how important supporting characters are in an animated movie.
Whereas Netflix Swapped movie fails in its plot. In spite of its appealing premise, this movie follows an extremely predictable plot that does not have the potential to surprise the viewer. Everything happens predictably – from the war between the two kinds to their misunderstanding to working together in the end. Moreover, even the premise itself, the idea of body-swapping that could have been the most intriguing feature of the movie, is used in quite a shallow manner. Sometimes it may seem that some serious issues, like the imbalance between nature and technology or xenophobia, are discussed in the movie, but these ideas are completely disregarded in the end.
The same problem can be noticed in the movie’s humour. Indeed, it is hard to say that the humour is completely missing since there are several moments in the film that are really funny. However, there is one thing about this humour – it looks like something meant to make little kids laugh. Nothing wrong with it, except that the charm of a great animated movie is its multi-layered humour.
The other factor which should be pointed out in this context is the pacing. The pace is incredibly fast, switching from one thing to another without providing sufficient time for establishing an emotional connection to the events occurring on the screen. It may be said that the development of the relationship between Ollie and Ivy, whose goal was to create an emotional bond, appears somewhat contrived.
Nevertheless, having reviewed all of the aforementioned issues, one must conclude that Swapped is still a fairly decent film. The important lesson taught in the movie, the importance of seeing things from other people’s perspectives in order to get a better understanding of them, is quite meaningful, especially for younger viewers.

Overall, it can be said that Swapped starts well but does not succeed in meeting its objectives. The content is rich in thematic ideas and plot development, but the execution lacks originality. It has moments of entertainment, yet fails to create any memorable impact.
