7 C-dramas Like Veil of Shadows to Get Lost in a World Filled with Romance, Wuxia and Fantasy Magic

C-dramas Like Veil of Shadows: I never thought that 月鳞绮纪 would become that show and take over my watch list, and yet, here I am, completely hooked, captivated, and perhaps even a bit obsessed with it. Based on the story by Pu Songling and directed by Edward Guo, this show just has that vibe of everything working perfectly. Starting with the way Lu Wu Yi comes to Wei Manor undercover, you are drawn into a complex world full of demons, hidden secrets, and loyalties that shift constantly.

Of course, part of the appeal has to be the cast, who all add something interesting to their characters. In particular, Ju Jingyi plays the mysterious fox spirit character beautifully, but I especially loved how Tian Jiarui portrayed Ji Ling, with his double nature, making you question everything about him. On top of this, there’s Joseph Zeng and Chen Duling in the mix, resulting in multiple romantic relationships that all deserve some attention. What makes me particularly love this show is the lack of a focus on only one couple in the drama.

But what really cemented it for me was the beautiful blend of romance, wuxia, and fantasy seen in the series. There are just layers upon layers of story, dreamy visuals, and a slow burn that builds up into something passionate without being hasty about it. I haven’t had such an appetite for drama in a long time, and that’s precisely why I’ve scoured for Cdramas that have a similar vibe to Veil of Shadows – here are six of them.

C-dramas Like Veil of Shadows

Love Between Fairy and Devil

The only drama that made me feel this way again is this show featuring Esther Yu and Dylan Wang. The plot focuses on a gentle and naive fairy who falls in love with a demon lord who is not what he seems to be. This story is initially a light one, but soon turns into a heart-wrenching tale of sacrifices, self-discovery, and hard choices.

The elements from Veil of Shadows that were very similar are the romantic relationship developed amidst conflicts and tensions, instead of an immediate attraction. There is also this push and pull between the couple, which makes you feel like you want to jump into the screen and tell them to stop fighting. Finally, the visuals in both stories were equally captivating and almost painted-like.

Love and Redemption

Featuring actors Cheng Yi and Yuan Bingyan, this series centres around reincarnation, destiny, and perseverance through emotional turmoil. It revolves around the story of a female protagonist who was born without the capacity to experience emotions and a male protagonist who bears the cross of love through several lifetimes.

The resemblance can be drawn from the themes that revolve around the identity and the secrets that are kept by the main characters. In a similar fashion, the plot in Veil of Shadows reveals secrets from the past that drastically alter one’s reality. Moreover, the romantic plotline in both series is exceptionally complex, as it goes beyond the idea of falling in love.

Immortal Samsara

Starring Yang Zi and Cheng Yi, this drama takes us on an unforgettable journey filled with immortal beings, taboo love, and unbearable sacrifice. We follow the story of a medicinal fairy and a stoical god who keep struggling to preserve their love due to responsibility, misunderstandings, and the whims of fate.

The similarity in my eyes is the way the romance in the show is portrayed. Just like in Veil of Shadows, the romance isn’t rushed; rather, it develops over time, with characters separated by distance and the passage of time only making the audience wish for more.

The Blue Whisper

With Dilraba Dilmurat and Ren Jialun starring in the lead roles, the show centres on a demon hunter and the captive mer prince who embark on an unpredictable romantic journey. It is a tale of power, autonomy, and the emotional ramifications of being in love with an individual who shouldn’t be loved.

This show reminded me of Veil of Shadows due to the moral ambiguity of the characters and the dynamics that kept changing. Everyone in the show isn’t entirely good or evil, and every choice comes with significant repercussions. Their romance was also believable since it developed through shared experiences and emotions.

Ashes of Love

Starring Yang Zi, Deng Lun, and Luo Yunxi, this series is usually regarded as a classic of the xianxia genre. This is because it is about a romantic affair that is hampered by destiny, misunderstandings, and a universe in which emotions are both an asset and a liability. This series shares the same depth of emotional development as Veil of Shadows due to how the character arcs have been developed and how complex the relationships between the characters turn out to be.

Till The End of The Moon

This drama stars Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu and presents a dark and passionate love story amid chaos and fate. The heroine goes through time to prevent the emergence of the demon king in the future, but discovers she has fallen in love with him. Among the other dramas listed here, this is probably the closest match for Veil of Shadows in terms of the overall dark atmosphere. The romance is passionate, complex, and heart-wrenching, as characters always find themselves at crossroads between love and duty.

Pursuit of Jade

There would not be a list of my favourite C-dramas without mentioning Pursuit of Jade. It is probably among the most popular ones that have been discussed this year. This historical Chinese drama tells the story of Fan Chang Yu, the daughter of a butcher, and Xie Zheng, who had been a nobleman before. He lives under many different names, while her relationship with him starts with pretending marriage, but eventually leads to true love and passion. However, the arrival of war forces them to part their ways again.

It was impossible for me not to find similarities between Veil of Shadows and this drama, as both stories revolve around the concepts of illusions and identities. First of all, they have an important arc when our main characters lived happily as a family in their own little village. These contrasting images of peaceful family moments and the coming war reminded me of the previous drama because of the illusion or alternate life concept. Moreover, Pursuit of Jade has everything that I look for, romance based on separation and longings, and people struggling against circumstances.
