I’m Not Afraid Ending Explained
Who Kidnapped Felipe?
The abduction of Felipe could not have been the handiwork of an individual but was instead the result of a conspiracy by multiple adults from Miguel’s village who, in turn, had been forced into desperation by years of economic struggle. The leaf rust disease had destroyed their coffee production, debts were mounting, and there were no jobs around. It was through Pino’s accidental encounter with Felipe while on duty as a delivery man that Margarita came to know that the boy’s father, Emilio Bentancourt, was employed by the distribution firm and could easily afford to pay a hefty ransom.
The villagers thus persuaded themselves into thinking that the act of abduction would eventually help their own families out of poverty. The plan was well coordinated among the gang members. Pino won the trust of Felipe and enticed him to come near the truck by giving him a surprise. As soon as Felipe was near, Félix donned the horrifying mask, knocked him down with drugs, and helped take him to the “Witch’s House”, which had been readied for this purpose by Teresa and Guadalupe.

Felipe was then tied up in a pit in the basement as the kidnappers asked Emilio for 500,000 pesos from Emilio for the release of the boy. But all was to go wrong when it came to their knowledge that Emilio had already squandered away his money due to his gambling and could not give the ransom demanded by them.
Who Was the Mysterious Worm Man?
Freaking Worm Man, who used to scare Felipe during his time in captivity, was actually Félix. In order to remain anonymous, Félix used to visit the captive boy with an extremely scary mask, making sure that Felipe would never know what he looked like without it. On each occasion when he visited Felipe, Félix made Felipe terrified of him by informing him about the death of his parents, making fun of his hope for rescue, and even forcing him to eat food containing worms.
Unlike the other adults, who ultimately found themselves tortured by feelings of guilt about the kidnapping, Félix ended up becoming the most merciless member of the gang. With the ransom scheme deteriorating, he became more and more inclined towards using violence as a means of forcing Emilio to pay. He went as far as suggesting that a finger be cut from Felipe’s hand to show the seriousness of the kidnappers. Although Pino prevented him from torturing the boy, it became clear what kind of lengths Félix was ready to go to. His masked identity represented his dehumanisation, which allowed him to dissociate himself from his evil deeds.

How Did Miguel Rescue Felipe?
Felipe’s captivity under the dilapidated building was discovered by Miguel first, but freeing the young man did not come easily. To start with, he used to bring him food, water and hope in the beginning by promising that he would be set free one day. But as Miguel slowly came to the realisation that the culprits were not any unknown persons but those adults whom he trusted most, including his own parents, he found himself caught in a conflict between being loyal to his family members or following his conscience.
At the end of the I’m Not Afraid series, Miguel called Chava, Maria, Calavera, and the other kids to rescue Felipe. Taking the keys of Félix’s truck, they went into the forest and finally found Felipe, who was relocated to Esmeralda Farm. The kids rescued Felipe before the adults could reach him. Thus, Miguel and his friends proved their bravery by showing that it was greater than the fear that took control of the grown-ups during the whole movie. Despite the fact that they risked their lives while escaping, Miguel did not leave Felipe and defended him even when Rodrigo tried to shoot them.

What Happened to Félix?
At the end, it was time for Félix to face the consequences of his involvement in the kidnapping case after the police found evidence that would place him as a conspirator in Felipe’s abduction. Being the man who was wearing the mask and was also the one who slashed off his finger as proof of Felipe being tortured, the others saw to it that Félix would be blamed for everything.
However, Félix did not feel like protecting the others once he found out that he would spend a long period of time in jail alone. While undergoing investigation by the police, he told everything and admitted that the kidnapping was done by a number of people from the village. This brought all the other kidnappers into the light. Though Félix got arrested for his criminal activities, he did not let the other criminals hide behind him any longer.

Were the Kidnappers Punished for Their Crimes?
Yes, those responsible for the kidnapping of Felipe did finally face up to justice, but not owing to a brilliant police investigation, but through internal problems. It was through a series of anonymous phone calls, false ransom notes, and the increasing blunders made by the kidnappers that the detective department unravelled the whole truth. Margarita eventually tipped off the authorities, which helped provide a crucial hint, whereas Félix’s confession tore apart the whole plan.
The police then went ahead to arrest the parents of Chuy and began concentrating on the rest of the group, which included Pino and Rodrigo, among others. When they arrived at the forest, the operation had already been successfully done, and the kidnappers had no other choice but to give up all hopes of concealing the truth. While the show never reveals the actual punishments handed down to each character, it becomes very clear that the conspiracy has been brought to an irreparable end. The grown-ups who thought that kidnapping an innocent child could be the answer to all of their financial problems have lost everything else in the process.

What Happened to Miguel at the End of I’m Not Afraid?
Once Miguel manages to get Felipe out, Rodrigo cannot contain himself anymore and comes to the conclusion that the only way to get rid of any evidence is to murder the kidnapped kid. It is at this point that Pino jumps before the shots and takes the bullets in Miguel’s place.
While the audience does not find out if Miguel survives or not, the episode ends without revealing how the situation turns out. In the moment when the police come, Pino cries, telling Miguel to remember him forever and being ready to answer for all that he did. Miguel repeats the same words, “I’m not afraid.” The episode does not reveal what happens next, thus redirecting the audience’s focus from the uncertainty of Miguel’s fate to the development he went through. The point is that whatever Miguel’s fate will be, it is not going to be decisive in any way.

What Does the Ending of I’m Not Afraid Signify?
At the end of I’m Not Afraid, we witness how fear motivates normal individuals to do evil things, as well as see that real heroes are usually those who have the least power. Virtually all adults in the village allow poverty, hopelessness, and despair to motivate them to kidnap an innocent child. What seems like a strategy for improving their future actually makes them lose their human values, connections, and moral principles. However, unlike the adults, kids never excuse themselves. Instead of being scared of losing their money, freedom, and good name, Miguel and his companions prefer to be compassionate.
Miguel’s last words, “I’m not afraid,” sum up the whole story. In the beginning, he is afraid of the legends around him, the stranger, and the unknown, but towards the end, he must face much more dangerous situations, like betrayal from the adults he had trusted and death, but Miguel does not leave Felipe alone. This makes the other children come together to do what the adults have failed to do. It seems, in the end, that the series is saying that innocence is not about age, but about having the strength to make the right decision at any cost, because fear can corrupt anyone who gives in to it.
