Pyaar Prema Kalyanam Review: Directed by Elan, who also makes his acting debut as the titular Elan, the Netflix Tamil romantic comedy stars Saanve Megghana as Pavithra aka Pavi, alongside Radhika Sarathkumar, M.S. Bhaskar, Yogi Babu, Senthil, Geetha Kailasam and others. The movie has a runtime of around 2 hours and 6 minutes.
Pyaar Prema Kalyanam Review
Netflix Tamil movie Pyaar Prema Kalyanam begins with Elan, a young man who comes back from Dubai with hardly any career plans of his own and, ultimately, ends up accepting an arranged marriage as per his family’s wishes. He ends up marrying Pavi, a strong woman who has established herself as a social media influencer and does not want to let go of her independence despite being married to a man.
As soon as it is time for her to leave her parents’ place with her husband, she says no and asks her husband to move in with her family instead. Now, all of a sudden, it is the man who has to learn how to be flexible, to cook, clean and fit in at his wife’s place. What I find very interesting about Netflix’s Pyaar Prema Kalyanam is the fact that the basic premise of the movie becomes immediately evident and instantly relatable.

It would not be hard to point out numerous Indian movies that revolve around a new wife being forced to adjust to the house of her husband. In this movie, however, Elan is the one whose place is in a foreign household and is now trying to get accustomed to his new life. What I like about this movie is the fact that it does not have to go through a whole long explanation of what makes this premise comical.
However, I was also under the impression that once the Tamil film Pyaar Prema Kalyanam establishes this premise, it gets less sure of itself. While it understands that there is definitely something to be talked about, it chooses an easier option to make jokes rather than to explore the implications of its own plot. This is what makes Elan’s becoming a house husband potentially very good satire on the way domestic work is viewed if a man does it. However, the film often uses his shame as a conclusion.
Among all the characters, perhaps Elan is the one whose growth and development are most facilitated by the setting. In the beginning of the movie, Elan appears to be a man who is far from maturation even though he is already an adult in years. The fact that he quits his job in Dubai just because he is missing his home makes us realise that he is dependent on the comfort provided by his parents. Thus, when he finds himself in trouble with Pavi’s family, he does not become their victim as much as he is in need of further personal development.

On the other hand, my feelings towards Pavi were rather mixed. I understood why she does not want to leave her parents’ place and why the traditional concept irritates her so much. In particular, it was very noticeable in the scene of the wedding when the emotional gap between the families of the bride and groom made her wonder why marriage means giving up one’s home. I liked that the movie provided her with the opportunity to raise such issues which people tend to take for granted in most family films. However, sometimes Pavi lacks the depth of emotions that she should have according to the concept of the script.
Radhika Sarathkumar, on the other hand, brings a lot of personality to the dynamic within the family members. This is because she takes up the role reserved for the scary mother-in-law, which makes the interactions between her and Elan quite entertaining at times. However, that is also the part in the movie where I think the writing becomes too predictable, failing to constantly test the conventions of the roles of the mother-in-law, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law.

It was also enjoyable to see how the cast complemented each other with the help of the family setting in the Netflix film Pyaar Prema Kalyanam. The character of Vinoth, played by Yogi Babu, is entertaining but also serves as a great contrasting element with the character of Elan. The approach towards marriage adopted by him forces Elan to reconsider what type of husband he should be.
As for Elan’s performance, he certainly had enough charisma to pull off the role of the main character, especially during the comical scenes that do not require much action. There were some moments when his acting seemed to be a bit too eager to make the joke work. Since he directs the movie as well, sometimes it seemed like he could have done a little less with the character. Saanve Megghana seems to act better when Pavi is difficult, confused, and vulnerable.

Netflix Pyaar Prema Kalyanam Review: Summing Up
Overall, Pyaar Prema Kalyanam is a movie with an appealing concept that sometimes lacks the courage to fully develop it. I appreciated the gender role-reversal plot, the growth of Elan, and the way the movie made fun of traditional values at home. What I would have preferred from the screenplay was a greater degree of criticism of its own characters and not to rely on their embarrassment all the time for humour. So, the movie is fun to watch and has quite a few meaningful scenes; nevertheless, it is much less provocative than the initial idea suggested.
