Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 1-2 Review: Adapted from the popular webtoon Manager Kim by Toy, 김부장 is directed by Lee Seung-young and written by Nam Dae-joong. The action thriller stars So Ji-sub as the mysterious bank employee Kim Do-hyeon, better known as Manager Kim or Code 66, alongside Choi Dae-hoon, Yoon Kyung-ho, Joo Sang-wook, Seo Su-min, Son Na-eun, Kim Sung-kyu and others.

Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of Agent Kim Reactivated reveals Kim Do-hyeon as a modest bank worker and single dad who is determined to bring up his teenage daughter, Min-ji, in the best way possible. Even though his life looks quite dull, there are certain elements that show that he is keeping many things from people. He silently goes back home with all those bruises after being assaulted by some locals on his way back from work. Kim and his daughter become the emotional backbone of the drama as he fears for her well-being and does everything he can to provide her with a regular upbringing.

At the same time, Min-ji has trouble adapting to her new school and soon becomes a victim of bullying by her classmates. However, what makes her situation worse is the kindness of one of the students from her class, Nam-hoon, who gives her his sweater after a humiliating experience in physical education class. Even a small gesture can infuriate Joo Hye-ri, a conceited and rich student who cannot allow Min-ji to come closer to him. In the meantime, while Kim tries to manage work and prepare a gift for his daughter on her birthday with the help of Jung Sang-a, his colleague, Min-ji gets more and more isolated at school.

Aside from the central narrative, the film also features Park Jin-cheol and Seong Han-su, two other interesting and intriguing individuals whose background is unknown but who have obviously shared past experiences with Kim. These characters’ funny moments help lighten up an already heavy mood, but it soon becomes evident that they are much more talented than they first show themselves to be. While a gang is causing problems in a restaurant, Jin-cheol immediately proves himself by showing his martial arts skills, and Kim discreetly leaves the scene.

In the school, Min-ji’s conflict with Hye-ri worsens because the bullying has reached intolerable levels. Both fathers are forced to meet at the school, and it comes as a shock to everybody when Kim makes an apology, kneeling down to Hye-ri’s father, a man who wields immense influence as the owner of a construction company named Joo Kang-chan. Min-ji thinks that her father has humiliated both of them, but all he wanted was to protect his daughter from a family capable of ruining anyone’s life.

It all becomes very scary, and everything starts changing after that. When she receives a text from Nam-hoon’s phone requesting her to meet at the back of the school, Min-ji suddenly vanishes. While looking for Min-ji frantically on the next day, he finds traces of blood as well as Hye-ri’s hair tie near a construction site. At the end of Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 1, he then confronts a thug involved in the situation, and as a result, his true identity starts to be revealed. He suddenly emerges as a skilled fighter when he was once known as Code 66.

Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of Agent Kim Reactivated dives right into what actually went down between Min-ji and who exactly Kim is. The reality of the matter turns out to be much more horrifying than any of the ones that Kim has ever thought up. Being lured behind the school through Nam-hoon’s phone, Min-ji is violently attacked by Hye-ri, her friends, and hired goons. Despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered, she bravely puts up a fight until Hye-ri beats her up with a brick, causing her to lose consciousness in a puddle of blood. Thinking that she’s dead, the scared group of people turns to the infamous Gold Tooth Gangster.

In finding out about the incident that led to his daughter’s abduction, Kim is informed that Nam-hoon, too, had been attacked prior to the use of the mobile phone to ensnare Min-ji. Cornering one of the criminals on the construction site, Kim makes him reveal the truth about what had transpired. The confession strips away the last vestiges of the soft-spoken banker that the audience met early on. In order to find Min-ji, Kim picks up from where he left off many years ago with the use of weapons and combat training in searching for the gang involved with Gold Tooth.

Moreover, this probe unveils the astounding secret about Kim’s past. Before he became a regular father, Kim had been serving as South Korea’s most famous intelligence agent known as “Code 66.” He had been engaged in many deadly missions within North Korea, and his reputation as a spy was so notorious that even after many years of disappearance, he continues to be one of the top priorities of the enemy country. Once the footage of the brawl at the restaurant inadvertently records Kim, North Korean intelligence understands that he is alive and sends its deadliest assassin after him.

However, Kim’s appearance becomes known to South Korean intelligence as well, and they understand that they need to find him before their northern counterparts. All of a sudden, Kim finds himself not only looking for his daughter but also becomes involved in a race between two intelligence agencies.

Despite the fact that the fingerprints of this character are useless and detectives cannot identify who he is, there is another cliffhanger at the end of the kdrama. While he sits quietly in the police station after his arrest and during the investigation, he suddenly realises that there is an incoming call from Min-ji’s mobile phone. He immediately manages to overpower the policemen who are standing between him and that phone and to receive the call. At the end of Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 2, we see that he gets his first hope that his daughter is still alive.

Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 1-2 Review

With this drama starting out, I was already aware that this story’s concept isn’t exactly novel. There have been many narratives involving ex-agents who are brought back to duty following a threat made against their loved ones. However, as proven by Kdrama Agent Kim Reactivated Episode 1 and 2, the execution always trumps the originality of any story. With emotional stakes set right away, there’s no way anyone won’t support Kim, not only as a father but as a reactivated agent. Once Min-ji disappears, the story takes a different turn effortlessly.

The most important aspect of this series’s success is undoubtedly So Ji-sub. Honestly, I love how he selects his roles recently. Last year, in Mercy for None, he portrayed a man driven by revenge after losing his brother, delivering a performance filled with quiet rage. In this case, his restraint is also used to protect his daughter, and he succeeds in doing this much better than before. He speaks very few lines, but every glance, every movement tells a lot about his inner state. It is exciting to watch him change from an ordinary salaryman to a terrible monster named Code 66.

The supporting actors are equally as worthy of praise. Su-min Seo makes Min-ji an instantly likeable character by embodying her youthfulness, as well as showing a strong will and ability to assert herself. The menacing Joo Kang-chan, portrayed by Joo Sang-wook, shows that sometimes it’s better to be calm and cool-headed when it comes to being scary than making threats. Choi Dae-hoon and Yoon Kyung-ho give the needed levity to each scene they’re in, as well as suggest that there is much more to their story. Son Na-eun makes a nice first impression as Jung Sang-a, giving a dose of warmth to Kim’s everyday work before everything goes to pieces.

Agent Kim Reactivated Review: Summing Up

In just two episodes, I am fully invested. The fights have been choreographed with great finesse without seeming too extravagant, the drama hits right on point, and each cliffhanger leaves me wanting to know how it ends. What is more impressive is that the Korean drama Agent Kim Reactivated has already set up a stage for something much grander than just the story of rescue, because both the North and South Koreans have now joined in the fray. I truly cannot wait to see what happens next in Kim’s story.
