Ticket to Heaven Episode 4 Recap

Episode 4 of Ticket to Heaven opens with a scene of Tanrak telling Master Phak about the fact that he is beginning to wonder about his own life path, which he believed to be inevitable all along. After the events at Christmas, the seminary goes back to the usual lifestyle; however, the relationship between Tanrak and Barth continues developing through little things. What starts as a dispute about their Christmas picture ends up as a very romantic gesture of the boy who leaves Tanrak flowers every single day without telling anyone about it. The movie nights and walks around the seminary show how impossible it is not to notice their feelings anymore.

With the coming of the Christmas holidays, most students pack up and leave campus; however, Barth does not move out since he has no place to go. Wishing to keep company with Barth, Tanrak makes the decision to stay on campus as well. Their relationship draws the attention of Master Phak, resulting in an intense discussion where Tanrak opens up about how he now wants more than just to be a priest.

Even though he claims he will still choose God, were he ever to make a choice again, Barth hears what he says and cannot help but wonder if the relationship will last forever. Later, much to his surprise, Master Phak reveals his own doubts about his chosen path in life, urging Tanrak to be sincere with himself and not everyone else.

Ticket to Heaven Episode 4 ends on a high note when Tanrak assures Barth that what they have is genuine, and then they go to spend New Year’s Day together. After borrowing a bike and a Walkman from Cherry and Phai, they run away to a waterfall where Barth reveals how hard his childhood was and why he doesn’t believe in God anymore. Rather than judging him, Tanrak assures Barth that she will pray for his mother, making them even closer. Their fun-filled day culminates in their first kiss, and they carve their initials in a tree.

Ticket to Heaven Episode 5 Recap

In episode 5 of Ticket to Heaven, it is time to resume seminary classes following the holiday break, but everything is different for Tanrak and Barth. Their relationship has passed an irreversible boundary, and the joy they felt in each other’s company is now mixed with the fear of discovery. Tanrak tries to improve his relationship with Kongdech by wearing the shirt that was a gift from his mother at their lunch meeting. Nevertheless, the air between them turns sour since Kongdech’s mother is happily discussing her vision of the future she planned for both boys as two priest brothers. Tanrak fails to reply confidently, and this is enough for Kongdech to figure out what happened.

Later, Kongdech secretly gives back Tanrak his lost rosary, informing him that it was Barth who accidentally dropped it. This minor act instantly triggers fear in Tanrak because he remembers that it is so easy for anyone to learn the truth about their relationship. Though Kongdech does not openly accuse him, he certainly understands that the boys have been too close to him. Since that day, Tanrak has been constantly worrying about hiding their love. While working together in the library, he even suggests inviting Kongdech to join them in order not to draw attention, but continues to write notes to Barth when there is no one around.

But no matter how well-thought-out their plans might have been, the pressure just keeps increasing. On one particular night, Barth meets up with Tanrak in a storeroom, having been frustrated by always pretending that he and Tanrak were merely friends. As they embrace, they hear footsteps approaching, thus scaring them away from each other. Fortunately, they manage to escape without getting caught, but the shock sends Tanrak into a state of mind which prevents him from comforting himself even when Barth offers to console him.

Instead, Tanrak’s fear overtakes him, making him insist that they part ways in order to keep their meeting hidden from others. When Father Arnon catches up with Tanrak, he tries to remind him of Joe’s unwavering faith. No longer able to contain the internal conflict, Tanrak starts distancing himself from Barth. The young man is unable to forget his dream of being a priest and his belief that by obeying the will of God, he would be able to reconcile with his parents someday. However, each happy moment spent with Barth makes this decision harder for him. Finally, Tanrak gives in to his emotions and bursts into tears, trying to find his true desires.

In the end, the students get an opportunity to work with kids from Joe’s foundation, giving another chance for the audience to learn about the compassion of Tanrak. The kids instantly get attached to him and ask whether he intends to become a priest in the future. In response, without much hesitation, he states that he will continue visiting them even if he decides to pursue any other career. Both Joe and Barth understand the importance of this statement very well.

Barth is guilty, too. Realising how much the lifelong dream of Tanrak means to him, he starts questioning himself about whether falling in love with him made things harder for him. Thoughts about his mother return to him when he finds himself standing in front of Mother Mary’s statue, culminating in him calling his parents’ house to listen to the voice of his mother on tape. It is a heart-wrenching realisation that both of the boys have wounds deeper than their relationship.

The conflict within Tanrak becomes most apparent after he mistakenly turns in his homework, which was filled with drawings of the kind that he and Barth had made. Being afraid of the possibility of anyone finding out about them, Tanrak goes out late into the night in order to burn everything that would hint at their affair. Tanrak destroys the pages from his notebook before he takes all the flowers of Barth and their love letters, and burns each of them beside the abandoned swimming pool. However, despite his wish that the flames would cleanse his mind, it only leaves him empty.

Later, Father Arnon observes the ashes on Tanrak’s hands and suggests that he think about his own heart problems. The next day, however, is filled with confrontations coming from all directions. Kongdech tells him that he knew about the drawings and felt sad that his closest friend did not have enough trust in him to be honest. Not long after this, Barth wants an explanation as to why he has become distant all of a sudden. As Tanrak asks him to give him some space because he wants to pray, Barth’s frustration erupts into an argument.

Overwhelmed by his emotions, Tanrak finally confesses in front of Father Arnon, asking him if God would forgive him if he chose to end his relationship with Barth. To Tanrak’s surprise, Father Arnon tells him that God’s love will not end just because one has fallen in love with someone. Nevertheless, he tells Tanrak that he alone will have to make the decision. At the end of the Thai series Ticket to Heaven ep 5, Tanrak cries out that he loves Barth, and Barth suggests that they both should run away from everything since this place cannot take them both.

Ticket to Heaven Episode 5 Review

Episodes 4 and 5 dramatically altered the tempo of Ticket to Heaven. Where the early part of the series was concentrated on gradually developing the relationship between Barth and Tanrak, these two episodes finally allowed them to give in to their feelings before instantly reminding us that there is a price to be paid for happiness. I enjoyed the way that Episode 4 provided the duo with the opportunity to just be teens in love. It didn’t matter whether it was Barth’s secret flower delivery for Tanrak, their playful behaviour during the New Year celebration or their relaxing experience by the waterfalls; every scene felt cosy, organic and authentic.

Their first kiss was no longer seen as an impressive show but rather as the reward for all that was silently happening between them. Then Episode 5 turns this happiness into misery through fear, guilt and secrecy. Norawit and Fourth give some of their best performances in this show. Fourth acts fantastically at capturing the emotional breakdown of Tanrak as he goes from excitement in falling in love to feeling anxious all the time regarding what will happen in his future. Every expression he makes reveals the burden he feels every time he makes a tough choice, whether it is confessing to Father Arnon or when he burned Barth’s flowers and love letters.

On the other hand, Gemini shows us the vulnerability in Barth; it gave us insight into why Barth had such difficulty believing. In the Thai BL series Ticket to Heaven Episode 5, we see him frustrated because the one he loves is pushing him away. Even the supporting cast plays a vital role in making these scenes more effective. With the help of Ashi Peerakan Teawsuwan, Kongdech’s frustration becomes totally understandable instead of being antagonistic, which gives these scenes a much stronger emotional edge than just the conflict would have done.

The character of Master Phak, created by Bright Rapheephong Thapsuwan, amazes me with his ability to show the existence of doubt even among people who have devoted their whole life to the religion. An Oliver Poupart gives us one of the most emotional scenes in the Thai drama Ticket to Heaven Episode 5 when he portrays Father Arnon’s compassionate reaction to Tanrak’s confession. Even the minor parts played by Cherry, Phai, and Joe help make the story and the inner conflict of Tanrak advance.

Ticket to Heaven Episode 4-5 Review: Summing Up

The thing that I was impressed with the most about Ticket to Heaven was how the writer managed to find the perfect balance between hope and sadness. While Episode 4 was full of flowers, joy, songs, and first love, Episode 5 takes all those feelings away, substituting them with ash, silence, and difficult decisions to make. The symbolism, including when Tanrak takes off his rosary before his first kiss with Barth, and when he burns everything that reminds him of their relationship, brings even more emotions to the viewers without being artificial.

In just one episode left, the series gets to a level where there seems to be no solution for any of the characters. After Episode 5 ended with Barth asking to run away together, I am curious and worried about what the last episode will bring to us.
