Husbands in Action Review
The premise of the Netflix Korean movie Husbands in Action is hilarious right from the start. Detective of narcotics, Hwang Choong-sik, and the veterinarian, Lee Min-seok, have quite a few things that can make them dislike each other. One of them is the former husband, while the other one is the current husband, and both of them are still in love with the same family. When the ex-wife and daughter of Choong-sik are kidnapped, both of them are brought together in order to save them. The predictability of every scene in this film could not stop me from enjoying it.
The thing that I enjoyed most about the movie was the relationship between Choong-sik and Min-seok. The film knows that what makes it strong is not the kidnapping story or the criminal underground story. Rather, it is the constant conflict between two guys who just do not want to be where they are, but who constantly argue, compete with each other, and try to cooperate in an awkward way. And more importantly, none of them is just a one-liner joke.

Jin Sun-kyu’s Choong-sik could easily have been portrayed as the irresponsible ex-husband who never grew up, and Gong Myoung’s Min-seok could have been seen as the ideal replacement husband. However, the movie lets both of them show flaws, be stubborn, caring, and unexpectedly vulnerable. As the plot unfolded, I ended up caring about their relationship much more than about the rescue operation itself. The process of their mutual acceptance is predictable; however, the actors play their roles in such a way that it is quite enjoyable.
Comedy is yet another big factor that makes Netflix’s Husbands in Action such an entertaining flick. It is filled with silliness right from the start. Be it slapstick humour, ridiculous situations, or the never-ending rivalry between the two stars, the film moves at a good pace thanks to its lively atmosphere. Not all jokes work as well as intended, but the film doesn’t get stuck on any.

It was nice to see that the comedy arose organically through the interaction between the characters and was not entirely dependent on the absurdities of the situation. After all, most of the time, the funny moments arise because of the people involved. The impulsiveness of Choong-sik and the rationality of Min-seok create a good source of comedy for this reason.
Another part of the movie that I liked was the character of Ma Do-jun, performed by Kim Ji-suk. He is a gangster who radiates a very eccentric energy, yet his character becomes memorable in the sense that he is not another stereotypical criminal character. Similar to the two main characters, his behaviour and decisions are greatly impacted by the way he relates to his wife, Hye-ran. In a way, the film creates three husbands out of the three characters, whose choices are motivated by their love for women in their lives.

The action scenes certainly have their place as well. They may not be anything extraordinary, but they are definitely interesting enough to make you interested in what is happening on screen. Car races, fights with the criminals, various rescue operations, everything is presented in a light-hearted manner befitting the nature of this movie. The film does not try to transform itself into an action one, and I believe that is for the better. The action serves as a background for comedy most of the time.
However, moving on, let’s take a look at the weaknesses. In my opinion, the major problem with the Korean buddy comedy movie Husbands in Action was the fact that the screenplay failed to utilise its interesting concept to the fullest extent possible. The plot of the film seemed to be quite unique at the beginning, yet then, when everything was set up, the story went down the usual road of an action-comedy genre.
Everything that can possibly happen is completely foreseeable in advance. Emotional cues occur precisely as expected, characters grow and develop through predictable paths, and villains fail to stand out regardless of how hard the actors try. While there is nothing inherently wrong with being predictable, this particular film lacks the necessary narrative depth to cover this up.

Ironically, even as this movie sings praise of these dedicated husbands, it fails to do justice to the characters of women. Out of all the female characters in the movie, probably the most developed one is Hye-ran, and the intelligent aura that Lee Da-hee gives the character is a big plus point. However, Si-nae remains an underused character even though she is one of the main reasons for the plot to exist.
Despite all these, however, I would not say I found it boring at all. The tempo is still exciting, the acting is still engaging, and above all, the Korean movie Husbands in Action does not forget about its main purpose – entertaining. The sincerity of the movie helps to excuse its bad screenplay. It is obvious that everybody knows what kind of movie they are shooting, and this knowledge is what makes the movie more enjoyable despite all its drawbacks.

Netflix Husbands in Action Review: Summing Up
Overall, it is not a movie that attempts to change the formula of the action comedy genre; neither is it a movie that aims to do anything of such kind. However, the film has many other features that make it worth watching. While the plot may seem rather predictable, the action and comedy elements stay interesting throughout the entire film.
