Wild Sing Review: Directed by Son Jae-gon and written by Kim Chae-woo, Netflix’s Korean movie 와일드씽 stars Kang Dong-won as Hwang Hyun-woo, Um Tae-goo as Gu Sang-gu, Park Ji-hyun as Byeon Do-mi, and Oh Jung-se as Choi Seong-gon, alongside Hyeon Seo-ri, Park Jung-won, Kang Ki-young, Choi Dong-goo and others. The film follows the former members of a forgotten first-generation K-pop group who are unexpectedly given a chance to return to the stage more than 20 years after their career ended in scandal.

If you have had the song I Like You by Choi Seong-gon dominating your social media feed in the past few months, you should know that you are far from being alone. Oh Jung-se’s infectious performance has made the movie’s song a low-key banger, making many people curious about what movie it belongs to and whether it’s worth watching. Finally, Wild Sing has been released on Netflix, which is a great opportunity to satisfy that curiosity.
Nevertheless, this film offers more than just one interesting song or an ode to K-pop of the past times. The plot of the movie revolves around Triangle, a co-ed group created by a rather enterprising entertainment company. Hwang Hyun-woo, Gu Sang-gu, and Byeon Do-mi soon became successful after their debut until the scandal involving their second song ruined their career. Years later, they are offered the last chance to fulfil their dream again and sing together once again.
Korean film Wild Sing begins by giving the viewers an insight into what had become of each of the members since the end of their career and how they coped with disappointment in their lives that they used to dream of. Hyun-woo still preserves the identity he built up as a star, although he gets less and less attention. He still remains confident, though one can feel fear of being forgotten.
Sang-gu’s life path has diverged much from that of others; he has an ordinary job with a lot of financial burdens, making his comeback less of a sentimental journey and more of a way to achieve something for himself. The life of Do-mi seems to be the easiest one among the three because she has a life of luxury as a result of her marriage, but her life is far from being the best of all because she has everything but freedom in making her own decisions.
Moreover, Hyun-woo doesn’t seem like the type of leader that people would want to root for from the very beginning. He remains too obsessed with his previous self-image, constantly referring to the history of Triangle as his own. While this confidence may seem amusing sometimes, it also shows just how much Hyun-woo relies on the success he has lost. With time, he comes to realise that the failure of the group has hit Sang-gu and Do-mi just as hard. Hyun-woo’s character development becomes more convincing when he starts considering the meaning of the group as a whole.
The representation of the early era of K-pop in the movie is another aspect that provides entertainment. All the performances of Triangle are marked by dramatic choreography, extravagant costumes, unique hairstyles, and all the other features that look very nostalgic and embarrassing for the current age. The film does not present the group as effortless cool idols. On the contrary, it embraces the awkward and exciting nature of the time when idol groups were forming their style.
Kang Dong-won, Um Tae-goo, and Park Ji-hyun deliver their exaggerated acts with conviction, giving the sense that Triangle is an authentic ensemble of that period. The dynamic of the group is achieved because the members do not act like those who have been together for 20 years. There are some long-standing resentments among the members, and coming back together brings up those painful memories they try to forget.
Oh Jung-se adds another intriguing dimension to the story by playing Choi Seong-gon, an ex-singer whose career was ruined by a scandal. Similar to the members of the band, Seong-gon has been away from his dream for many years. With his participation in the film, the theme of second chances becomes broader as Triangle is not the only act trying to resurrect itself. The story of Seong-gon serves to demonstrate the difficulty of accepting the fact that while you have kept holding on to your dream, people have forgotten about you.
Oh Jung-se provides a lot of comedy with his character, but there are also elements of sadness behind the weirdness of Seong-gon. He is not just there to provide more comedy on the road trip. He knows what it feels like to be forgotten about due to a scandal and to be judged only by the worst moment of your life. His wish to return to the stage is quite relevant to the story of Triangle.
The main problem with Netflix’s Wild Sing is the transformation of the narrative after the reunion takes place. At the beginning of the film, we witness a very emotional build-up of the reunion of former idols getting one more chance, but in the middle part of the movie, it becomes more and more unrealistic, as a road-trip comedy.
Park Yong-gu’s scenes are the most exaggerated. Since he is one of the main reasons behind the fall of the band, his comeback makes the band able to face the person responsible for their failed career. But the problem soon gets too entangled that it becomes distracting from the story and the characters’ emotions. I was looking forward to seeing them back on their music and resolving their problems.
Wild Sing Korean movie is not bad in any way. There is some humour in the absurd situations that happen to the characters who react to them very seriously. The thing is that the movie tries to create too many obstacles on the way, and at one point the trip itself loses its connection to the story that was introduced in the beginning. The movie has good emotional grounding but sometimes prefers chaos to characters’ development.
However, at last, in this film, Wild Sing is brought back to its most important theme. Triangle is no longer a young group trying to make it big. They are mature now, with their regrets, disappointments, money problems, and broken dreams. Their performance on stage is significant because now they perform with less of the burden that used to control their lives before.
Performance also emphasises the extent of their transformations. While Sang-gu is able to prove how much effort he has put into preparation for this performance, Hyun-woo learns that joining a group means being ready to help his comrades around him. Audience reactions are another emotional component since they remind Triangle that their career did not fade away from memory. Even after all those years, there are people who remember their music and the joy they had from it.
Netflix Wild Sing Review: Summing Up
Overall, Korean movie Wild Sing is generally an entertaining story of a comeback featuring a dedicated cast and a meaningful theme about never giving up on your dreams. The K-pop atmosphere makes for a nostalgic setting, the struggles of the main characters make sense, and the final concert proves to be emotionally satisfying. Unfortunately, the lengthy and chaotic part of the trip ruins the chances for the film to be more memorable, but it does not detract from its appeal.
