The Elixir Ending Explained: Was Karina Able To Survive till the End? What Happened to Rahman and Ningsih?

The Elixir Ending Explained: Written by Agasyah Karim and Khalid Kashogi, along with Kimo Stamboel, who is also the director of this show, Abadi Nan Jaya. This movie features a talented Indonesian cast bringing chaos and emotion to life: Eva Celia as Karina, Mikha Tambayong as Kenes, Donny Damara as Sadimin, Dimas Anggara as Rudi, Marthino Lio as Bambang, and others. It’s a film filled with horror, humour, and tragedy combined, showing how greed and pride destroy even the strongest family.

The movie Elixir builds a foundation on a family business, founded on complicated relationships within the family. Set in a quiet Wanirejo Village, this family owns a well-known herbal medicine factory called Wani Waras. Their life appears peaceful in the beginning, but deep cracks are already showing when the film introduces us to a broken family struggling to stick together.

Kenes, Sadimin’s daughter, has just come back with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Rudi, to finalise some business matters. Her marriage is falling apart because Rudi had an affair with a woman from the same pharmaceutical company that wants to buy Wani Waras. Karina, previously Kenes’s best friend, is now her stepmother after marrying Sadimin, which has created an emotional distance between the two women. Adding to the chaos is Bambang, the lazy son who spends his time playing games instead of taking responsibility for anything.

When a worker arrives to deliver a new batch of herbal medicine, Sadimin proudly drinks the formula himself. To the amazement of all who stand by, the potion indeed makes him younger: his wrinkles fade, his body straightens up, and he claims to have discovered a miracle. But within a few hours, the so-called “miracle” begins showing terrifying side effects.

With the family, tensions rise when Sadimin refuses to sell the company, believing that his elixir of youth will make their brand unstoppable. The arguments explode between father and children. But before they can calm down, Sadimin collapses and starts acting strangely. His skin turns pale, his eyes lifeless, and within minutes, he attacks one of his employees, biting into him like a wild animal.

What was supposed to be a quiet family get-together soon turns into a disaster as the infection rapidly spreads through the house and among the workers. As people get bitten, they lose their control and turn into human flesh-eating zombies. The family is gripped by pure panic; in the confusion of trying to flee, they manage to get separated: Kenes and Bambang take the car, while Karina, Rudi, and Kenes’s young son Raihan find shelter inside a nearby building, the same one where a circumcision ceremony was taking place just hours before.

How Does the Zombie Outbreak Take Place?

This outbreak has its roots in the pride and the carelessness of Sadimin. The herbal factory Wani Waras had been doing research on medicine to raise energy and youthfulness. While the formula was still in a testing stage, Sadimin, wanting to prove his genius, consumed it himself. In the beginning, it worked: he became younger and healthier, and that fact fed his conviction that he had discovered something very important.

Instead, the potion awakened death rather than restoring life. The potion stirred up something inside of him that was uncontrollable; it turned him into the very first zombie. Infection from his bites and saliva spread to workers and villagers. In a few hours, Wanirejo village, which was once peaceful, turned into a battlefield.

Who Survives Till the End?

By the final act, most of the family and villagers have either been zombified or killed trying to escape. Bambang becomes one of the most heroic characters toward the end of The Elixir film as he sacrifices himself to save others. Trapped under a truck and surrounded by zombies, he sets off fireworks and creates an explosion that burns the horde, buying time for the rest to flee.

Already-infected Rudi does not make it either; he tries to protect Karina and Raihan to the very end but succumbs to the virus. Kenes herself realises toward the end that she has been bitten and, in one of the most emotional scenes, says goodbye to her son. She distracts the zombies to let Karina and Raihan escape on a motorcycle.

As the camera follows them, leaving the burning village, it becomes clear that Karina and Raihan are the only survivors. Yet, their relief is short-lived, because what’s waiting outside is not salvation but another wave of the same curse.

Was Rahman Able to Propose to Ningsih?

The love story of Rahman and Ningsih gives meaning to the chaos. Early in the film, Rahman, a local police inspector, attends the circumcision ceremony in which Ningsih pointedly ignores him; he had promised to marry her but disappeared for days. Apologising during the event, he tells her he’s ready to take responsibility. But just as he gathers courage and proposes, he gets a call from the police station and rushes away, promising to return that evening.

But by nightfall, the zombie outbreak has already begun. As fate would have it, the two reunite later at the Wanirejo Police Station, both wounded and exhausted. Surrounded by zombies and realising they won’t survive, Rahman finally slips the ring on Ningsih’s finger. In their final moments, they exchange “I love you” as the zombies close in-a hauntingly tragic end to a love story that was supposed to be cut short by the elixir’s curse.

Was Sadimin’s Family Able to End the Zombie Completely?

No, and that’s what makes The Elixir ending so haunting. The surviving family members, Karina and Raihan, make good their getaway from the village, but the infection is far from over. The final scene shows Mrs Grace in Jakarta has already drunk the same herbal medicine that Sadimin’s company had sent earlier. She smiles as she feels the rejuvenating effects, unaware that she’s about to turn into the next zombie.

This closing moment confirms the continuance of the outbreak. What started in that small village reached the city, and the cycle of horror goes on. The film doesn’t end with hope; it ends with the grim realisation that human greed and ignorance will always find a way to resurrect the dead.
