How Did Jack Really Die in The Boroughs?

What really triggers the mystery that develops in The Boroughs is the death of Jack. As the other members of the retirement community assume that Jack had died from his sickness during his sleep, the horror of what actually happened only becomes clear to Sam when Jack dies one day at night. What Sam sees is an abhorrent creature sucking the life out of Jack as the latter lies down in his bed. Sam beats the creature to drive it away, but by then it is too late for Jack. The following morning, it is discovered that Jack died of heart disease as a result of his sleep apnea, allowing the Boroughs’ management to quietly cover up the truth.

With further investigations by Sam in partnership with Wally and Judy, it is revealed that the aliens extract cerebrospinal fluid from the residents during their sleeping hours. This makes the victims weak over time, affecting their well-being, their memory, and finally resulting in their death. Jack’s death was not the result of an instantaneous assault, but rather because he too succumbed to the cycle created by Blaine and Anneliese to sustain Mother. Since the victims were already old people suffering from illnesses, their deaths did not look out of the ordinary to anyone, making the Boroughs an ideal hunting place for the creatures.

Who Was Mother and How Were Blaine and Anneliese Using Her?

The Mother is an ancient being which was found years ago under the ground where the Boroughs would later be constructed. In 1949, Blaine Shaw, whose actual name was Marcus Shaw, unearthed a strange egg under the ground in proximity to the mines. Upon being hatched from the egg, the creature revealed some unique powers, the most prominent among which were the powers of youthful immortality and healing sickness using blood. After recognising the true value of the creature, Blaine Shaw and Anneliese spent the rest of their lives harnessing power over Mother.

But the maintenance of Mother’s life demanded continuous sustenance. Her babies, referred to as the “sons,” would be sent down underground tunnels from the Boroughs where they would consume the cerebrospinal fluid of the people in their sleep and bring it to Mother as food. Blaine and Anneliese effectively used the entire retirement community as their feeding grounds in order to ensure their eternal lives. While the sons may look terrifying, the television show shows that neither the sons nor Mother were evil themselves. Mother had been trapped in her life of agony due to the exploitation she had suffered at the hands of Blaine and Anneliese for decades.

Why Was Sam Seeing Visions of His Dead Wife Lilly?

Throughout the Netflix series The Boroughs, Sam continues to have unsettling visions of his dead wife Lilly, suggesting that he is losing control of himself. At first, these visits seem to occur because of traumatic hallucinations, since Sam is still psychologically scarred from the loss of his wife. These visions usually involve recreating the tragic night of Lilly’s death, leaving Sam repeatedly stuck in the most painful experience of his life. As the story progresses, however, something else begins to take place.

The fact was that Mother was sending her messages through Lilly to Sam. Sam’s mind had been shattered emotionally by his grief. So he became easier prey for Mother’s telepathy. Mother could easily contact people who already had emotional trauma, confusion, and were stuck in their memories, which was also the reason why some of the Manor residents also felt the effects of her power.

She used Lilly’s image because she thought that Sam would listen to her through it. The bizarre phenomena that occurred whenever Sam saw those images were signs that Sam was witnessing something imaginary. In the end, Sam comes to know that Mother had been showing him the right path and asking him for help to free herself from her pain.

How Did Sam Escape From the Manor?

Once Sam and the group discover more about the creatures as well as the secret that lies within the Boroughs, Blaine and his followers arrest them and bring them to the Manor. Although the Manor appears to be a mental asylum where aged people are sent when they exhibit signs of lunacy, in actuality, it is also where all those who know the truth are confined so that Blaine can carry on with his control.

Eventually, Sam escapes thanks to his friends because Art and Paz contribute greatly to making a distraction that diverts the security forces’ attention from them, so that they are able to sneak into the Manor unnoticed. Meanwhile, while being locked up in there, Sam is trying desperately to look for a way out, but fails to do so. Eventually, he is helped by Judy and Renee, who finally join him after being diverted by the distraction created by Art and Paz. Together, they help Sam get out of the Manor and avoid the attempts of Blaine’s men to stop them. Their goal now is to uncover the truth and set Mother free before Blaine regains his immortality.

What Happened to Anneliese at the End of The Boroughs?

As the finale unfolds, Sam and company manage to use the unique biology of the Boroughs to their advantage against Blaine and his associate Anneliese. It is discovered in an earlier episode of the season that the blood of entity reacts violently to the emissions of cathode ray TVs from the past. Taking advantage of this information, they set up a particle beam trap using the emissions of these televisions, which causes great harm to Blaine’s associates. At the end of The Boroughs, Anneliese dies because she could no longer survive without the life-giving blood of Mother.

Was Sam Able to Take Mother to the Plum Tree?

Yes, Mother is finally taken by Sam to the plum tree, which turns out to be the spot where she hatched from an egg decades ago. Throughout all the episodes of the movie, it is evident that Mother wants to stop her life as a prisoner. She had been suffering for centuries as Blaine and Anneliese kept her alive and immortal using her body and blood. Therefore, the plum tree and the cave next to it became her native place where she could finally sleep in peace.

At the ending of The Boroughs, we see Sam bring Mother there, and Mother asks her children to come to her for the last time. Blaine tries to prevent this from happening and even kills Sam in an attempt to prevent this from happening because, after realising that both Mother and his immortality are out of reach from now on, he was overwhelmed with anger.

However, in the nick of time, Mother releases her spirit while Blaine is still not in charge of her soul anymore. The powerful release of energy that follows this act results in the death of Blaine, too. Later, Sam has one last dream involving Lilly; this time, it is not a traumatising experience; it is a pleasant farewell Sam needed to say to his dead loved one all along.

How Does The Boroughs End and Will There Be a Season 2?

The ending of The Boroughs series is emotionally satisfying. Now that Mother is dead and Blaine is gone, normality returns once more to the Boroughs. The few remaining characters share a meal at Sam’s place, enjoying each other’s company and valuing the life that they have left to live. Sam seems to be calm now; he no longer tries to run from the facts, accepting the death of his sister as a reality. The finale perfectly encapsulates the main ideas discussed throughout the series: ageing, grief, and the inevitability of death.

But then, towards the end, there are hints that maybe everything isn’t done yet. While dressing his wounds from the last episode, Sam briefly experiences an identical glitch in the mirror as Lilly had experienced during her visions. This implies that something is connecting Sam and Mother even after she dies. There is room left open for speculation; it could mean that there is still some strange power in town, or that Sam himself has somehow changed permanently, or that some other kind of supernatural entity is starting to take over. While Season 1 has been a relatively complete narrative, there is definitely space for a Season 2 of The Boroughs should Netflix decide to make one.
