The Bondsman Review: This supernatural action-horror series on Prime Video has 8 episodes, each about 30 minutes long. The show was created by Grainger David and directed by Sanaa Hamri, Thor Freudenthal, Lauren Wolkstein, and Catriona McKenzie. It stars Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Nettles, Beth Grant, Damon Herriman, Maxwell Jenkins, Jolene Purdy and others.

The series revolves around Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter played by Kevin Bacon, who is killed but is brought back to life by the devil. His job? To trap demons who have escaped hell and return them to their rightful home. But he isn’t working alone; his family, however troubled they may be, accompanies him on this wild adventure.

The Bondsman Review

From the very first episode, I could tell Prime Video The Bondsman was going to be a wild ride. It has a lot of action, horror, and also humour. If you like your supernatural stories with plenty of fights and creepy monsters, this is your show.

The Bondsman series’s best part, truly, is Kevin Bacon as Hub Halloran. He has a tough, serious role, but he’s struggling with guilt from the past. Hub isn’t without faults, like so many action heroes. He understands he made mistakes, and now he is trying to make things right. That makes him a more interesting character.

Kevin Bacon handles the action very well, too. He still looks muscular for his age and moves like an actual action star. His brawls with demons are savage and thrilling. If you are into his stuff, then you will love watching him in this role.

One thing that I enjoyed about this show is that it never is slow or boring. There’s no superfluous drama since each episode runs only 30 minutes. Each episode features action the mystery, with a new surprise. You could binge the whole series in a single afternoon.

I have watched a number of supernatural shows, but The Bondsman makes me feel differently in a good way. Rather than send Hub off to battle underground on his own, the show brings in his family right from the start, making it a far more interesting story. There are also some neat subversions of the usual “heaven and hell” mythology. Some of that will feel new, some will feel familiar.

If you enjoy light-hearted horror and action, you will appreciate how this show approaches fights and special effects. The demons look scary, the action is well-staged, and there’s bucketloads of blood and gore. Fair warning — this isn’t just a little blood; this is a show for mature audiences only, and it holds nothing back in terms of gore.

However, the show looks really good, and some of the CGI looks a bit unrealistic. Not all the demons are as menacing as they ought to be. It doesn’t spoil the fun, but with a bit of additional work, it could have appeared better still.

Since the episodes are fairly brief, some strands of the story have insufficient room to grow. There were a couple of moments where I thought some plot points could have been explained a little better. But the fast pace also ensures that there are no moments of boredom, so it is a good and bad thing.

Summing Up

The Bondsman is a great cocktail of supernatural action-horror-comedy propelled by a great performance from Kevin Bacon. It’s gritty and enjoyable, with enough edge-of-your-seat moments to reel you in. The short lengths of its episodes make it an easy binge-watch, and the blend of mythology, action and family dynamics makes its story compelling. If you have an aversion to blood, gore, or dark comedy, this may not be a show for you. The violence is visceral, and there are some disturbing images. Take that information in whatever way you will, but if you like action-horror, it’s great news!
