The Husband Episode 5-6 Review: Directed by Kim Jung-hyun, 결혼의 완성 stars Namkoong Min as Kang Tae-ju, Lee Seol as Ko Se-yun, Kim Dae-myung as the chilling kidnapper Noh Man-hui, Lee Sang-hee as his equally disturbing wife Kim Gyeong-ae, alongside Jang Gwang, Oh Min-ae, Cha Mi-kyung, Park Byung-eun and others.
The Husband Episode 5 Recap
In Episode 5 of The Husband, we are taken back in time to find yet another instance of the problems that Tae-ju had faced in his relationship with his father-in-law Dong-chan. Dong-chan had wanted Tae-ju to forsake his values in order to benefit the hospital, even going as far as putting Se-yun’s life at risk in order to do so. This gives us a better understanding of the problems Tae-ju and Se-yun face in their marriage.
Back in the present, Tae-ju teams up with Su-hyeong in their last effort to get in touch with the kidnapper. Analysing the hidden cameras installed by the criminal in both Dong-chan’s and Tae-ju’s houses reveals the extent to which the kidnapper has been watching all aspects of their lives. Using the same cameras, Tae-ju manages to make a connection with the kidnapper and proposes an alternative ransom offer. This risky manoeuvre works out for Tae-ju, who is able to connect with the kidnapper and promise Se-yun that he will come for her whatever happens. Exhausted and mentally drained, Se-yun holds on to this promise as she plans her escape.
However, this scene soon becomes yet another carefully planned trap. While Tae-ju does what the kidnapper tells him to do, Su-hyeong stealthily tries to follow them in order to catch the criminal off guard. But then Su-hyeong starts shooting at a suspicious car which is presumed to belong to the kidnapper. Everything gets out of hand as it turns out that the so-called suspect is in fact an undercover policeman. As a result, the police get involved in the mess, which totally spoils Tae-ju’s attempt to save the hostage. Now he has to run away carrying the ransom money.
The solutions are too late. Su-hyeong confesses that he had consciously chosen to go against the original plan because he thought the kidnapper would never intend to bring back Se-yun alive anyway. Without waiting for the two men to regroup from the failed attempt, the kidnapper tries again. Taking advantage of their preoccupation with what just happened, he tricks them into another trap, which leaves Su-hyeong critically wounded.
In The Husband Episode 5, at his last request, Su-hyeong pleads to Tae-ju not to stop searching for Se-yun. Determined to find Se-yun himself, Tae-ju examines Su-hyeong’s findings, where he finally finds a hint about a missing button of a shirt. This small discovery brings him closer than ever to the unknown kidnapper. Meanwhile, Se-yun succeeds in freeing herself and runs into the snowy forest.
The Husband Episode 6 Recap
Episode 6 of The Husband does not delay in shedding further light on the sick past of the kidnapper. The flashback illustrates how one small meeting with Su-hyeong many years back resulted in the kidnapping murderer’s obsession with Su-hyeong, which is the reason why the ex-policeman was stuck in the same nightmare even before Tae-ju came along. Now, the kidnapper comes back from murdering Su-hyeong, enraged by Tae-ju’s constant defiance of his orders.
On the other hand, Tae-ju manages to enter the hospital surreptitiously despite the efforts of the police trying to find him. With the use of his memory of an old consultation, he manages to narrow down the files to eventually come across the person’s name connected with the missing button. Yet again, he is surprised because this too is yet another trick, as the name does not belong to him and confirms the kidnapper’s use of stolen identification. While Tae-ju is nearly apprehended by the police in the hospital, he gets a stroke of luck that enables him to escape.
As Tae-ju approaches closer to finding out the truth, it seems like Se-yun finally manages to escape after coming to a nearby road. She then gets a ride from a kind-hearted lady who takes her to the police station. This gives a ray of hope to Se-yun as well as the viewers. However, it does not last long because the lady turns out to be an accomplice to the kidnapper.
In The Husband Episode 6, after drugging her, she brings her back into captivity, where yet another shocking truth comes to the surface. It becomes evident that the harmless-looking hostage, Seon-ja, was nothing but the kidnapper’s wife named Kyeong-ae, all along. Together, the couple tells Tae-ju how playing with the emotions of their hostages gives them just as much pleasure as violence.
Tae-ju does not fall for the lie and finally discovers his whereabouts once he knows the truth about his identity. Man-hui is then held at gunpoint and ordered by Tae-ju to disclose the whereabouts of Se-yun. He eventually discovers her in the basement, and despite his presence in front of her, Se-yun hesitates owing to what has happened to her. With Tae-ju desperately insisting that he never betrayed her, the couple attempts to escape from the house.
However, they are attacked again by Man-hui and Kyeong-ae, and thus, the house becomes another battleground for the two. They eventually manage to escape in their car, but things are not over yet. Man-hui ends up hitting them with a car and attacks Tae-ju with a shovel once Se-yun wakes up, bringing an end to The Husband kdrama ep 6 on one of the most intense cliffhangers of the season.
The Husband Episode 5-6 Review
It was at this point that both of these episodes really changed the flow of the show for me. I found the mystery interesting enough to watch, but The Husband Episodes 5 and 6 take the drama to a place where it just can’t be put on hold. I always think that Tae-ju has outsmarted the kidnapper, but then the kidnapper outsmarts her once again. This makes it so that the power dynamics between predator and prey always change through the script, keeping you in a suspenseful state throughout the entire episode.
The scariest part is when they became such scary villain characters. It is not because they were kidnapping people only for money but that they loved torturing people psychologically before doing something physical. Seeing how they made Se-yun doubt her husband was as shocking as seeing all those physical attacks from their side. There should definitely be more attention to the fact that Se-yun deserved way more respect than being called the victim.
It doesn’t matter whether she was preparing herself for the escape, walking in the freezing forest or standing by Tae-ju’s side during the attack; she was very brave. It made me so happy to see how she didn’t let them take control but defended herself when she could. Everything becomes even better with these performances. In his performance as Tae-ju, Namkoong Min shows his best emotional acting ever by combining desperation, smarts, and guilt without falling into the same routine again and again. Lee Seol keeps surprising me as Se-yun, who does not allow herself to become a hostage.
Kim Dae-myung is totally intimidating as Man-hui, who makes a perfect psychopath who intimidates with his composure rather than bursts of anger. Lee Sang-hee is just as good since Kyeong-ae is constantly switching from an innocent look to extreme cruelty. Together, the pair create one of the most unsettling villain couples I’ve watched in a K-drama recently.
I also enjoyed the fact that in the K-drama The Husband ep 5 and 6, Tae-ju gets rewarded for being smart. He doesn’t depend on luck but uses small bits of evidence to figure out who the kidnapper really is, recollecting some things he knew about his patients and revealing the false identity of the abductor. Sometimes, it seemed that I was watching a good detective and not a doctor. And since the policemen got close to solving the mystery, Tae-ju found his daughter, and there is another, much bigger, conspiracy about her father waiting for us, I am more intrigued than ever before.
