Spooky in Love Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Lee Min-soo and written by Choi Jung-mi, 오싹한 연애 stars Park Eun-bin as Cheon Yeo-ri, Yang Se-jong as prosecutor Ma Gang-uk, and Ong Seong-wu as Kang Min-hwan, alongside Jo Hye-joo, Cha Mi-kyung, Ye Soo-jung and others. Adapted from the Korean movie Spellbound, the drama blends romance, mystery, comedy, and the supernatural into an entertaining package.
Spooky in Love Episode 1 Recap
In episode 1 of Spooky in Love, the plot kicks off in an eerie manner at Haedam Reservoir, where the body of a dead individual is found in the midst of the forest by Cheon Yeo-ri shortly after prosecutor Ma Gang-uk comes in on receiving some information concerning a missing person case being investigated. The two do not know each other at all and instantly suspect that something fishy has happened. However, things turn nasty very quickly between the two before the police step in. Despite their appreciation for how Yeo-ri led them to the dead man, Gang-uk feels there is more to her than meets the eye with her.
The more the investigators dig deeper, the more they find out about the unusual weight that Yeo-ri has been carrying. Unlike others, she is able to see and speak with spirits. Rather than being scared, she has come to terms with the presence of spirits, although she is uncertain of what becomes of spirits in the end. There is a painful memory in a flashback that explains how the unique power that Yeo-ri has led her to ruin her marriage years back. Cha Gi-u used to say that he would always be with her, but he was scared of the phenomena that surrounded Yeo-ri.

On the other hand, Gang-uk is deeply involved in another case concerning Park Seung-jae, a well-connected person who gets away because of a lack of evidence and influence. While his superiors try to push him into closing that case, he cannot give up. Outside of work, Gang-uk’s grandmother is always worried about his loneliness and even takes him to a temple where she pushes him to get a girlfriend, which is funny since Gang-uk is extremely afraid of anything ghost-like.
Spooky in Love episode 1 also presents Yeo-ri’s problematic family issues. As the heiress of Reina Hotels and Resorts, she is always preoccupied with making business decisions and avoiding any physical interaction with anyone surrounding her. Her grandmother, Chairwoman Baek, initiates some changes in the company that include her plans for Sienna Hall, which holds sentimental significance to her due to her deceased parents. Family conflicts get heightened even further since Yeo-ri disapproves of the relationship between her cousin Ha-ri and Seung-jae, considering him unreliable despite his reputation.

Fate reunites Yeo-ri and Gang-uk due to two suspicious individuals who catch the eye of the prosecutor near a convenience store. It is revealed that there is a ghost who accompanies Yeo-ri without her knowledge while she is involved in Gang-uk’s hunt for something. Even though she tries to distance herself from what is happening at first, things lead her to help him.
They are able to find yet another secret body and are able to arrest the two suspects and prove that Yeo-ri’s paranormal ability played an important role in serving justice to those people. He finds hints about the unknown witness and connects him to the heir of the rich Reina Hotel. His search eventually takes him right to Yeo-ri’s office, thus concluding the Spooky in Love kdrama ep 1 with the natural act of instinctively stopping her from falling as her hand slips out of her sleeve, a gesture which might reveal her true identity.

Spooky in Love Episode 2 Recap
In Episode 2 of Spooky in Love, things begin right after Gang-uk manages to catch Yeo-ri. Surprised by the sudden skin contact, Yeo-ri tries to prevent any more physical contact while Gang-uk keeps asking her where the body found near Haedam Reservoir was located. Unable to stand up to his persistent questions, Yeo-ri admits that it was the ghost who told her the location. Naturally, Gang-uk doesn’t believe a word of her statement and thinks that she’s making fun of him.
In relation to the case, Yeo-ri keeps struggling between fulfilling the family’s wishes and her own beliefs. The chairwoman pushes her to develop the business by making a grand alliance with one of the companies, but Yeo-ri is not ready to betray her beliefs for the sake of expanding the company. On the other hand, Seung-jae threatens her because he finds out that she is against his marriage to Ha-ri. However, instead of giving in to him, Yeo-ri tells him that she knew his previous girlfriend, who is now dead and knows about his secret that he is trying to hide from everyone.

Finally, Gang-uk’s perseverance bears fruit when he collects the clues he missed from the hotel where the victim vanished. Each clue slowly reveals how Seung-jae had tampered with the scene and hid the corpse. But upon Gang-uk’s arrival at the roof to confirm his hunch, he cannot believe his eyes when he sees Yeo-ri looking for clues up there too. After yet another fight between them, his hunch is proved right, and Seung-jae is apprehended by the police on public grounds. The apprehension is devastating news for Yeo-ri and her family, especially Ha-ri.
In the latter part of Spooky in Love Episode 2, the story moves onto Jeju Island, where both the main characters find themselves heading to the same luxurious hotel for completely different reasons. Yeo-ri finds herself meeting CEO Kang Min-hwan of CL Raymond company, who happens to be an old acquaintance, trying to convince Yeo-ri to work with his company, whereas Gang-uk finds himself attending the marriage ceremony of his friend. Owing to an embarrassment at the hotel, both Yeo-ri and Gang-uk find themselves booked in the same royal suite. The noises coming from the suite make them both think of ghosts, without being aware that another person is there in the suite along with them.

Rather than letting the embarrassing situation dictate the course of their relationship, the story swiftly transitions into a new mystery. On one hand, Gang-uk starts looking for the missing young designer, Da-mi, while on the other hand, Yeo-ri gets the push from the spiritual world once again. While following their own individual paths, the two find themselves near a seaside cliff, where Yeo-ri slips and falls into the sea. At the end of Episode 2 of Spooky in Love, in no time, Gang-uk jumps into the water and rescues her and discovers Da-mi’s dead body.
Spooky in Love Episode 1-2 Review
Spooky in Love Episodes 1 and 2 accomplished precisely what I expected from them; they built the cast up for me without hurrying the romance and provided sufficient mystery to keep me involved in the story. In addition, I have to admit that I quite liked the way this drama manages to give meaning to Yeo-ri’s ghost seeing without turning it into a cliché. Her gift makes it possible for all the crimes to be brought to light and, therefore, it has some emotional value. However, what is even funnier is Gang-uk’s bold approach to criminals in general and his sheer terror in relation to ghosts.

The best part is the chemistry that developed between Park Eun-bin and Yang Se-jong. First of all, they are not just getting into some typical romantic stereotype immediately. On the contrary, they meet in the most absurd circumstances possible – from thinking that the other is a murderer to chasing suspects, arguing about ghosts, sleeping in the same hotel room, and discovering another corpse before having a chance to figure out their feelings towards each other.
Additionally, the murder stories were able to keep my interest because they were not only included in the drama for filler purposes before introducing the romance part. It was nice to see Seung-jae’s character arc give Gang-uk an opportunity to show his determination as a prosecutor, as well as the emotions added by Yeo-ri communicating with the spirits of the victims. I also enjoyed how the drama remembered all of the other characters who play an important role in this story. For example, Ong Seong-wu is already charming enough as Kang Min-hwan to leave me interested in his further development in the drama.

Netflix Spooky in Love Review: Summing Up
By the time the kdrama Spooky in Love Ep 2 ended, there were many more questions I had than answers, which is a good thing. Every time Gang-uk dismisses Yeo-ri on account of her mentioning ghosts, but since he always ends up right next to her and sees all the unbelievable things happening around her, one wonders how long it is going to take him to realise the reality. There is also the case of the corpse being discovered under the sea, the building up of pressure in relation to Min-hwan coming into town, and not forgetting the mysterious condition of Yeo-ri that has not been revealed.
