The Map of Longing Review: Directed by Laura M. Campos and Gemma Ferraté and adapted from Alice Kellen’s bestselling novel, El mapa de los anhelos is Netflix’s six-episode Spanish romantic drama starring Alícia Falcó as Greta, Pablo Álvarez as Will, Georgina Amorós as Lucy, alongside Laia Marull, Mario de la Rosa, Ramón Barea and others.

The Map of Longing Review

Netflix Spanish series The Map of Longing revolves around Greta, a young lady who has been trying to define herself based on her older sister, Lucy. Greta is completely lost after Lucy’s demise when she realises that her dead sister has devised challenges for her, which would enable her to move on. Through those challenges, Greta gets introduced to a man named Will, who has some personal fears and scars to cope with, just like her.

There is something soothing about Netflix’s The Map of Longing. In contrast to all other shows where the protagonists rush into love, this one realises that the two hurt people have to heal themselves before moving on to the next stage. This made the show extremely interesting because it does not view love as a magic cure, but rather as its consequence.

The thing that I really liked was the fact that Lucy is still impacting the story without overwhelming it. Even though she leaves well before the story even starts, her impact is felt everywhere throughout the entire work. Every obstacle that she leaves for Greta is something more than just another part of the plot – it is almost like an older sister preparing her younger sibling for what’s coming in life and how to deal with that when she will no longer be there to help.

Undoubtedly, Greta is the most emotionally central figure of the Netflix series The Map of Longing. What I liked about her character is the fact that she is not shown as someone who loses control every time. In fact, all her emotions get bottled up inside her, and she manages to convince herself that by moving on, she will be taking all the pain alone. Seeing how she rekindles old friendships, deals with tough talk, and realises dreams she had given up long ago made her character so likeable.

Will’s story came together in a way that really surprised me. He appears to be another character who does not have his romantic life sorted out, but then, in time, we learn why Will stays distant from everyone around him. His faults from the past and the weight of his guilty conscience, along with self-punishment, give him a deeper personality than anyone would think. Particularly interesting to me was the fact that it was not necessary for us to instantly forgive him since he felt bad about everything that had happened.

Their chemistry is also successful because it occurs spontaneously. Beginning in an embarrassing and reluctant way, but building up through experience rather than any extravagant declaration of romance. Some of my favourite moments in the show involve when they chat with each other while completing Lucy’s tasks. Actually, they say much more about themselves through these quiet conversations than through extravagant declarations of love.

Georgina Amorós succeeds in making an impression even when Lucy is off-screen most of the time. Every single flashback reveals yet another aspect of her kindness and empathy, which accounts for why Greta and Will continue feeling the influence of her after she is no longer around. Lucy stops being a mere element of the plot and becomes the emotional tie between all the characters.

Pacing is an aspect of the Spanish series The Map of Longing that moves at its own pace. There are instances where some episodes take quite a long time covering the same emotional matters, making the drama move too slowly. Some of the supporting actors lose importance when they get interesting, too. For example, the parents of Greta have their own set of emotional issues that should have been developed further, instead of just being a reflection of Greta’s emotional life.

At the end, this show had quietly evolved beyond a simple love story. This series is a story of forgiveness, forgiving others and, most importantly, yourself for being alive and making mistakes until happiness can enter your life once again.

Netflix The Map of Longing Review: Summing Up

Overall, The Map of Longing may not be perfect, but it works where it counts. This is a show about loss without being too bleak, and it offers an enjoyable romance that is truly moving because it evolves with real emotional growth. Through honest acting, smart character development and an emotional central premise, this is the type of show that you will remember.
