Why Did Sybylla Agree to Marry Frank Hawden?
In deciding to marry Frank Hawden, Sybylla was not moved by love as much as by the challenging situation of her family. At this time, Sybylla knew very well about the challenges her father was going through, and marrying Frank would mean security for both herself and her family. Frank himself had really fallen in love with her, and Sybylla too had grown fond of him. She liked being around him, and thought that maybe she could be happy in life with him without the love that she had for Harry.

After all that had taken place between Sybylla and Harry, she willingly accepted the offer to be the governess, thinking that it would be another interesting adventure in her life. What she got instead was being stuck in a crowded household where she had no privacy or peace.
As Sybylla could not bear another year in captivity, she decided to use one talent she had always had: reading people and manipulating the situation. Sybylla knew that Peter McSwat was depressed about his love relationship with the rich Suzie Duffy, so Sybylla suggested writing romantic letters to Suzie on behalf of Peter. In return, Sybylla demanded help in escaping from the house. Sybylla decided to make Mrs McSwat think that there was something romantic between her and Peter.
Upon seeing Sybylla with Peter, Mrs McSwat got really scared, thinking that Sybylla would do everything possible to spoil Peter’s name and make him lose the chance to win Suzie. Sybylla took advantage of this fear and threatened to expose Peter’s fictitious affair to Suzie. Finally, Mrs McSwat asked Sybylla what she wanted in order to keep quiet about this matter. Sybylla asked Mrs McSwat to cancel her family’s debts and get her writing desk back, which the McSwats had bought. Sybylla made a deal with the McSwats under the condition that her father would never borrow anything from them again.
Do Sybylla and Harry End Up Together?
No, Sybylla and Harry did not end up together in Netflix’s My Brilliant Career because, despite their mutual love, they never got married. They nearly got married on two occasions. During the first instance, Sybylla, who realises that getting married to Frank means that she is losing herself, goes to Harry and tells him about her true feelings. Sybylla turns down Harry’s proposal, not because she no longer loves him, but because she understands at last that loving somebody and deciding to live one’s life together with that person are two different things.

In essence, the Netflix series My Brilliant Career can be summed up as a story about a woman who rejects marriage, family obligations and social restrictions as factors that should dictate how her life should be conducted. Sybylla has lived during an era where the roles of women are to get married, bear children and try to adapt to what their families or their husbands have in store for them. The personal situation of Sybylla makes this more difficult since the debts of her father mean that getting married may help her save the family from debt.
Nevertheless, all through the novel, Sybylla constantly resists the notion that her life should be dictated by the most convenient decisions for other people.
