My Brilliant Career Review: Directed by Alyssa McClelland and Anne Renton, and developed and written by Liz Doran alongside Sarinah Masukor and Rachael Turk, Netflix drama stars Philippa Northeast as Sybylla Melvyn, Christopher Chung as Harry, Anna Chancellor as Mrs Bossier, Genevieve O’Reilly as Helen, Kate Mulvany as Augusta, Jake Dunn as Frank, Alexander England as Julius, Sherry-Lee Watson as Nell, Miah Madden as Betty and others. The six-part Australian period drama is based on Miles Franklin’s 1901 novel and brings its story of female ambition into a much more contemporary-feeling television format.
My Brilliant Career Review
Netflix’s My Brilliant Career revolves around Sybylla, a young lady born into a poor farming family who is driven by just one desire – that of being a writer. Sybylla is taken away from her home and sent to live with her rich relations at Caddagat with the hope that a change of scene would make her more marriageable and open up a world of respectability before her. But Sybylla could not care less about becoming what everybody else wants her to be. She desires to enjoy herself, to make mistakes, to be loved, to go on adventures, to use all of them to create her magnificent writing career.
This gets all the more difficult when Harry Beecham and Frank enter her life, and suddenly her freedom, which she was so confident of, becomes very hard to come by. In the Netflix series My Brilliant Career, the protagonist Sybylla is not the perfectly formed feminist hero who knows exactly what she wants. She is stubborn, impulsive and selfish, but it is these traits that allowed me to empathise with her. I understood her need for freedom, but I also understood why her own feelings made that freedom hard to achieve.
It’s not just a random thing to throw in on those occasions when the show wants to emphasise her independence. It colours the way she sees everything. Sybylla wishes to live first and write later because she thinks that she cannot possibly write anything good without having lived it herself. And I loved that concept because it gave a reason for all her restlessness. As she comes to Caddagat, she’s not just a girl trying to get away from her family. She’s doing it almost as if she’s researching her future self.
But of course, Harry complicates things further. The connection between Sybylla and Harry appeals to me because the connection is not totally detached from the whole progression of the character. Harry is an embodiment of the type of life that is continually offered to Sybylla but whose allure is such that she would have difficulty choosing between the two. This makes the story much more complex than your typical period romance. The issue here is not just about liking Harry versus Frank. It is about loving without losing the independence that she has fought so hard for.
Christopher Chung brings enough warmth into the character of Harry for Sybylla’s love to be credible, while Philippa Northeast portrays the inner contradiction of her character excellently. At times, it is clear that Sybylla is absolutely convinced that marriage cannot define her in any way, and at other times, she lets her feelings take the best of her. I understand that her indecisiveness might annoy some viewers, but in my opinion, it is one of the most credible aspects of her personality.
Another character whom I have found to be quite enjoyable is Augusta. In giving Augusta this edge, Kate Mulvany ensures that she does not come across merely as the old lady teaching the hero a feminist lesson. She sees through Sybylla’s potential and urges her to seriously consider what she desires out of her writings. This gives yet another angle to Sybylla’s notion of independence.
I found it commendable that the Netflix My Brilliant Career series does not confine Sybylla’s world only to romance. The series adds characters like Nell, Julius, and Alex, using their life experiences to expand the world beyond Caddagat. This was consistent with the effort by the series to view the past events from the present-day perspective, although I felt some of the added storylines needed more time to develop. There were times when I wanted the series to slow down and allow some of the characters to be emotional like Sybylla.
In terms of visuals, the Australian series My Brilliant Career is one of those shows where I could easily stop at any moment to admire the scenery. The Australian countryside, magnificent manor, costumes, and production design all create a nice background for a period drama, but this series doesn’t want to look like one. Modern music, humour, and a more romantic mood give it a completely different personality.
Overall, I found it fun to watch, especially since Sybylla is a very mischievous character. However, sometimes modern elements became distracting rather than adding to the atmosphere of the series. Sometimes pop music took me away from the era rather than refreshing the plot.
The only flaw in the series was melodrama. There were certain parts in My Brilliant Career which made me think that the emotional content was a bit exaggerated because of the fact that it could have been done in a more subtle manner with the help of the characters alone. At times, the love angle dominates the screen to such an extent that the artistic dreams of Sybylla take a back seat.
However, Philippa Northeast manages to keep bringing the series back together. The actress’ portrayal is full of energy and humour, and it makes all of Sybylla’s questionable decisions relatable. Her performance is young, full of spontaneity, and makes one see the character not as someone who preaches feminism but as someone who tries to discover herself.
Netflix My Brilliant Career Review: Summing Up
All in all, underneath all the romance, comedy, fancy costumes, and contemporary music, the 2026 My Brilliant Career series is ultimately a tale of a young girl who has convinced herself that she can wish for more. What I loved most about Sybylla’s story was that it was not one that progressed in a linear fashion; she doubted herself and made bad decisions, as well as being diverted by love, but always maintained her need for independence.
