Gold Land Episode 7-8 Review: Directed by Kim Sung-hoon and written by Hwang Jo-yoon, 골드랜드 stars Park Bo-young as Kim Hee-ju, Kim Sung-cheol as Woogy, alongside Lee Hyun-wook, Kim Hee-won, Moon Jeong-hee, Lee Kwang-soo and others. As we are close to the finale of the show, the anxiety regarding the disappearance of the gold bars evolves into something more sinister and very personal. Episodes 7 and 8 lead us through a treacherous path in which loyalty becomes a fluid concept, and survival is all that counts.
Gold Land Episode 7 Recap
Gold Land Episode 7 starts with Jin-man recollecting memories that he had shared with Si-no. This happens when he stands in front of an abandoned house and thinks back to their happier moments. In particular, he remembers the time he admitted his love to her and placed a ring on her finger. However, the flashbacks quickly turned into tragedy, as the drama unveils that Jin-man was once a suicide victim rescued by Chairman An. As a result, even in present times, Jin-man observes Si-no in silence.
This takes us back to where Hee-ju and Do-kyung had their altercation in the previous episode while trying to find the gold. When Do-kyung is being searched by Hee-ju, who suddenly confronts him with a gun, he tells her that he actually has a client waiting for him in Cambodia and that they will be able to escape when the deal is done. But Hee-ju does not believe him anymore because, although he helped her escape from a terrible situation, she wants to return the gold on her own terms.

In other developments, Chairman An officially begins the construction of the Golden Resort and also discusses the coffin’s gold bars with his friends. Jin-man gradually comes to the conclusion that he might inadvertently have revealed the whereabouts of Hee-ju during his previous research. Nevertheless, he keeps the information secret from Chairman An and pretends to keep looking for her. Meanwhile, Detective Kang finds the suspect car belonging to the company, thus putting everyone on track for finding Hee-ju.
Things get really complicated when Hee-ju comes to Dong-gu’s automobile manufacturing firm and makes a bargain using a little gold brick. Hee-ju gets warned by Woogy in secret that Ho-cheol is coming, and therefore, she needs to be hidden behind a wardrobe by Dong-gu. This scene is one of the wildest scenes from this drama series yet. The arrival of Ho-cheol causes a stir as he asks about the coffin and the strange lady whom he knows. Soon after, Woo-jin, along with Chairman An’s guys, barges in claiming he betrayed them.

In the midst of all this, Woogy remains concerned for Hee-ju’s safety and protects her from a distance as well. However, Dong-gu realises at last the worth of the gold and therefore agrees to work with Hee-ju. On the other hand, Ho-cheol finds out that the identity of Ha-ran was nothing but an illusion and that Woogy had access to the secret locker, which was involved in the creation of the false identification cards.
In the last of Episode 7 of Gold Land, everything that happened in the plot up to that point changes in terms of its significance. In particular, when Si-no calls Jin-man to a hospital before her surgery, she finally lets go of her secret that she has been hiding for years, telling him the truth: Hee-ju is their daughter. At that moment, all decisions made by Jin-man get a whole new dimension of meaning. In addition, he understands that his obsession with catching Hee-ju becomes even more tragic at this moment.

Meanwhile, Hee-ju relocates the hidden gold bars to a different car at the riverside warehouse after learning about her mother’s health deterioration.
Gold Land Episode 8 Recap
In Episode 8 of Gold Land, after the surgery that Si-no undergoes. Unfortunately for her and everyone else who cares about her, her doctors have no other options left, and she is asked to go back home and spend what remains of her life comfortably. The mood is immediately sombre from this point on, as each character tries to come to terms with their situation.
As Hee-ju comes to see her mother in the hospital, Jin-man secretly listens to what Hee-ju and her mother discuss using the secret microphone that has been placed within the room. Instead of seizing Hee-ju after having finally found out where she was, Jin-man holds back and decides not to grab her. In the course of the dialogue, Si-no tells Hee-ju something about her father without actually naming him, remembering how he met her for the first time.

Following their discharge from the hospital, Hee-ju makes efforts to move the gold and evade her pursuers as well. As for Woogy, he sets out to see Hee-ju without being aware of the fact that Ho-cheol’s men have set up traps for him. Having realised what is going on, Woogy warns Hee-ju against stopping the car and advises Hee-ju to keep away from him. Despite all the chaos around, this episode still finds time to look back on their past life.

Tensions start escalating after Ho-cheol captures Woogy. Despite the interrogation, Woogy resists naming Hee-ju and revealing her whereabouts. Things get even worse for Woogy when Ho-cheol instructs his soldiers to get rid of Woogy after the interrogation. The situation turns even more gruesome since Woogy gets injected with something, and he is found bleeding, leaving doubts about whether he will make it out alive.
On the other hand, Hee-ju tries to make sure that she has a way out by going with Dong-gu and Do-kyung. However, once again, Do-kyung pleads with Hee-ju to forget everything else and begin a new life with him, only for Hee-ju to turn him down. She gives him some gold bars instead and tells him to run away by himself.

This episode 8 of Gold Land also features Jin-man greatly, as he is conflicted by his loyalty towards Chairman An and his discovery that Hee-ju is his daughter. Once Jin-man learns from Hee-ju that Ho-cheol got information regarding the hospital from someone else, he starts developing his own scheme, which includes using the gold bars. He tells Chairman An that he can recover the gold if he is given a certain reward.
At the close of the episode, Hee-ju uncovers the concealed microphone at her mother’s hospital bed and asks Mi-ja to destroy it. Jin-man gets hold of Hee-ju directly and tells her that, contrary to Ho-cheol, he sincerely wishes to help her in handing over the gold. However, it turns out that Hee-ju has already delivered half of the gold to Do-kyung; hence, no one can be trusted completely anymore.
The episode ends on a rather touching note with Jin-man watching over Si-no, asleep in bed, knowing well that his world is falling apart all around him.

Gold Land Episode 7-8 Review
Finally, the drama stops concerning itself with the storylines surrounding the gold bars and turns its attention to the psychological scars that this group of characters has been wearing for years. The love story between Jin-man and Si-no takes precedence over everything else in these episodes. The discovery of the true identity of Hee-ju’s father might seem like something out of a soap opera, but it is delivered with such sincerity that it ends up being genuinely heart-wrenching.
I also believe that those episodes provided Woogy with one of his best scenes yet. Kim Sung-cheol keeps making Woogy come across as an unpredictable and reliable person at the same time, an unlikely combination that fits him perfectly. There are plenty of instances when he comes across as a character who could leave Hee-ju and run away, but never really goes there. The most intense episode featuring him is episode 8, and for a moment, I really believed that the series was about to kill him off.

The most interesting aspect that I have seen in episode 8 of Gold Land is the dramatic change in Hee-ju from the initial episodes. At first, all she wanted to do was just survive, but now she feels that her whole life is centred around the idea of getting a better life for herself and her mother. Despite being offered an easy way out by Jin-man, which involved surrendering the gold and not having to run anymore, Hee-ju couldn’t give up the hope of a happy life that she had envisioned for them. Her determination gave her a tragic aura, in my opinion.
Ho-cheol must also not be left out because he has completely transformed himself into one of the most sinister characters in the series. The drama seemed to become somewhat mellow in recent episodes, but episode 7 of Gold Land brought back all of that ferocity. Ho-cheol, assaulting everyone without mercy, has made everything quite unpredictable. Lee Kwang-soo’s Park Ho-cheol still remains terrifying because he doesn’t appear emotionally affected while doing horrific acts.

On the whole, Gold Land Episodes 7 and 8 make for a gripping penultimate week that is full of shocking revelations, betrayals, and violence. Although some of the choices made by characters continue to be perplexing, the show has done a commendable job at heightening expectations by placing virtually all of its principal characters in jeopardy.
