Gold Land Ending Explained
Did Hee-ju Truly Betray Do-kyung and What Happened to Him in the End?
Yes, Hee-ju betrayed Do-kyung; however, their relationship was not that simple and purely materialistic. First of all, at the very start of the series, Hee-ju trusted Do-kyung blindly and sacrificed herself completely for his sake by transporting the coffin full of gold through the airport. However, with the growing confusion in connection with the gold, she began to realise that all the people around her were willing to sacrifice others for their own survival. Moreover, Do-kyung preferred the gold to the safety of Hee-ju, even when several people had already lost their lives due to the gold.
However, eventually, Hee-ju was emotionally detached from him. Indeed, not only did she point a gun at him in the pawn shop and consider him a stranger due to the fact that, in her worldview, it became more crucial to survive rather than to have any emotional feelings of love. The suffering she had undergone throughout those years, including her poverty and witnessing her mother’s sufferings, turned her into an entirely different person who believed that by having kept the gold while Do-kyung was away, she no longer owed anything to him. Yet, despite rejecting him, Hee-ju still had feelings for him.

Sadly, Do-kyung makes a return trip to Korea following his negotiation for the leftover gold bars. His comeback initiates the last round of violence that takes place in the pawnshop. While facing threats at gunpoint from Ho-cheol, Do-kyung resists the temptation of Hee-ju to tell him where the gold is stored. Ho-cheol kills him on the spot when he starts shooting at Do-kyung. Therefore, Do-kyung loses his life because he never left the perilous environment. His thirst for gold has cost him his life in the end.
How Did Ho-cheol Die in Gold Land K-Drama?
Ho-cheol’s death was punishment for his greed and violence. In the drama, Ho-cheol continuously betrayed people, but secretly attempted to snatch away the gold for himself without returning it to the chairman, Ahn. Despite losing his power and status in the company, he was still chasing after Hee-ju, Woogy, and Do-kyung, as he felt that the gold was his last means of survival. At the end of the drama, he turned violent and ended up killing his own subordinates to protect his interest in the gold.

In Episode 10 of Gold Land, the showdown is at the pawn shop, where Ho-cheol holds Do-kyung hostage and makes him contact Hee-ju. As soon as Hee-ju reaches the pawn shop, there begins a series of chaotic events. Ho-cheol starts killing his fellow subordinates once he comes to know about the gold bars, indicating that he did not trust anyone. Finally, Ho-cheol cornered Hee-ju and Do-kyung, asking for the exact location of the gold bars, but since Do-kyung stopped Hee-ju from talking, Ho-cheol shot him immediately.
Following this, Ho-cheol attempts to torture Hee-ju for information when, suddenly, Kim Jin-man shows up and assaults him. The ensuing shootout provides Hee-ju the opportunity to temporarily run away and replenish her ammunition. In order to put an end to everything at once and for good, Hee-ju herself begins to chase after Ho-cheol. Even though she had been wounded during their fight, Hee-ju manages to shoot him dead. It is clear that the death of Ho-cheol leads to the destruction of the whole criminal scheme associated with gold and signifies Hee-ju’s final takeover of her life.

Did Hee-ju Return the Gold Bars to Chairman Ahn?
Hee-ju did not return the gold to Chairman Ahn in its true form. Despite efforts by various characters to negotiate the sale of the gold bars, Hee-ju had already made up her mind that she could not let go of the chance to transform her entire life. Towards the end of the drama, fake gold bars are used to trick Chairman Ahn and his gangsters. Later on, Hoon-seok finds out from Hee-ju that the gold bars presented to him were fake.
As soon as Chairman Ahn kidnaps Hee-ju in order to use her to trade for the gold with Jin-man, the truth becomes apparent, but too late. While Chairman Ahn’s men come to understand that the bars were not made of gold but were actually fake, Jin-man helps Hee-ju manage to escape. She escapes Korea with the real gold to France.

What Happened to Kim Jin-man at the End of Gold Land?
The ending of Kim Jin-man is considered one of the saddest endings in the series. In the whole series, Kim Jin-man is caught between two loyalties: the loyalty to Chairman Ahn and the love he has secretly felt towards Hee-ju and her mother. It is later discovered that Hee-ju is actually his daughter, but he denies it at first. After the death of Seon-ok, Jin-man wants to protect Hee-ju to fulfil her dying wish.
In the finale of Gold Land, Jin-man learns that while Hee-ju was being held prisoner by Chairman Ahn, she made arrangements for gold bars to be manufactured. This makes Jin-man realise that it will be his only shot at saving Hee-ju. With this in mind, Jin-man fibs to Chairman Ahn that he has gotten back the lost gold. Jin-man then offers the false gold in exchange for Hee-ju’s freedom. In doing so, Jin-man tells Chairman Ahn the shocking truth about Hee-ju being his daughter.
Yet, Jin-man has already realised that there is no future for him anymore. Once Chairman Ahn learns that the gold bars are not real, it will be impossible for him to let Jin-man live any longer. Keeping in mind the last desire of Seon-ok, which was for Hee-ju to leave this brutal world and start a new life, he decides to die for her.

Did Hee-ju and Woogy End Up Together?
Despite Gold Land being an ambiguous show in some aspects, it manages to offer a positive ending to Hee-ju and Woogy’s story. Throughout the entire drama, Woogy shows up as the only man in the movie willing to put his own life on the line for the safety of Hee-ju without wanting absolute domination of the gold. Whether it is hiding the gold bars or keeping her away from Ho-cheol and the dangerous people chasing them down, Woogy always proves to care for her well-being.
Yet, the damage done to Hee-ju is too profound and too great for her to trust anyone totally. With all the instances where she was deceived and played against by people all her life, she starts being cautious even of Woogy. Despite all his attempts to save her and not actually robbing her of her portion of gold, there always remains a suspicion in her mind that he, too, can betray her one day. Hence, towards the end, she pulls out a gun on him and decides to escape alone from Korea.
The ending of Gold Land drama revolves around France, where we see Hee-ju happily residing in the vineyard she bought with the money made from selling her gold. We can tell for sure that for the first time in her life, she is completely calm. However, in a surprising move, Woogy shows up and says hi to her as if nothing had ever changed between them since all this happened.

Even though it is not revealed in the story whether or not they become a romantic couple, it is clear that Woogy remains a part of Hee-ju’s life. This is more important because the presence of Woogy shows that he finally lets someone get close to him despite the years of betrayals and fears. No matter how intimate their relationship is, what is certain is that they find comfort in each other’s company after all the drama over the gold.
Will There Be a Gold Land Season 2?
At this point in time, the creators have not yet announced the making of Gold Land season 2 kdrama. There are, however, many unresolved issues which will allow the series to move forward if the show runners opt to do so. Despite being able to escape and leave South Korea with the gold in tow and subsequently freeing herself, Hee-ju is not out of the woods just yet. The Cambodian man can be seen tracking her in France, suggesting there are people still after her and the gold.

There is also the prospect of season two, which will delve into the question of whether the surviving organisation under Chairman Ahn still pursues Hee-ju and Woogy or whether new antagonists arise once they have found out about the lost treasure. The show will be centred around the efforts made by Hee-ju to preserve the new peacefulness of life and cope with the trauma of the experience in Korea. Season 2 of Gold Land is a viable option despite the lack of confirmation so far.
