A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Season 2 Review: Directed by Jill Robertson and Asim Abbasi, the second season stars Emma Myers as Pip alongside Zain Iqbal, Asha Banks, Raiko Gohara, Jude Morgan-Collie, Yali Topol Margalith, Yasmin Al-Khudhairi, Henry Ashton, Carla Woodcock, Mathew Baynton, Gary Beadle, Anna Maxwell Martin and Peter Sullivan. Based on the novel series by Holly Jackson, the Netflix thriller returns with six episodes running around 40 minutes each.

Given the events that have unfolded around the Andie Bell case, in Netflix’s A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Season 2, Pip Fitz-Amobi now wants to leave her status as Little Kilton’s teen sleuth behind. However, it goes without saying that peace can hardly last in this small town. While there is still an ongoing trial against Max Hastings, a new mystery comes up, putting Pip right back in the middle of another perilous situation.
What caught my attention straight away was how this season did not even try to fool me into believing that Pip is alright after Season 1. On the contrary, she is nervous, emotionally drained and always asking herself if what she is doing makes any difference at all. One area where Season 2 of A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder is very strong at is giving Pip the sense of being a real teenager rather than just another fictional “smart detective” role. Pip takes risks, she repels people, and she becomes so obsessed with the case that everything she does affects all of her relationships. And that is precisely what makes her interesting.
Emma Myers carries the entire series without breaking a sweat. This time, there is a certain sense of fatigue to her acting, and the series works much better for it because of it. Probably the most significant asset of this Netflix series A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Season 2, for me, is its highly personal nature. Contrary to the previous season, which had an element of fun related to unravelling the mysteries, the present season is filled with reminders that lives are ruined once these stories run amok. This is especially clear from the case of Jamie Reynolds, who is missing under very suspicious circumstances.
Moreover, the writers did not use shocking elements, but managed to keep the plot surprising while making the emotional aspect very important for the viewer. While this is true, the story of Max Hastings can be described as one that is most annoying, yet in a positive manner. The plot explores how helpless one feels while their public image is being considered to be much more important than the truth itself. While it would be inappropriate to reveal anything regarding the development of the story, the fact of the matter is that there were multiple situations within the trial episode that caused me to become truly angry.
Another great reason why A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder Season 2 turned out to be so awesome is Ravi. I have to say that, in my opinion, Ravi and Pip are among the best young couples that Netflix has created lately due to the fact that their relationship seems very real and healthy. Zain Iqbal brings so much truth and honesty to the role of Ravi that he perfectly complements the growing chaos of Pip’s mental condition. They don’t create unnecessary drama in their relationship, and it is refreshing. They support each other without controlling.

The other aspect I loved about the show was how much significance it placed on Pip’s friendships. It seems like there is always a sense that this friendship group will break down under all of the stress going on around them. Even small disagreements seem like an apocalypse, secrets are becoming more difficult to hide, and trust is being challenged.
From the visual standpoint, the show also appears to be much better looking this year. Although the brighter, even playful vibe from last season remains present, it now seems to be more chilly and claustrophobic. It is possible to notice the way in which Pip seems to be trapped within her investigation, thanks to the camera work. Moreover, the directorial style is more focused on psychology rather than thrills.
That being said, I do believe that sometimes the season slows down in the mid-episodes. The fact that both of the two main storylines are occurring at once means that there are times when one story is much more fascinating than the other. Additionally, a couple of the side characters are not fully realised due to how quickly things happen in six episodes. Particularly, I wished that they took more time with the story of Pip’s family since they were very down-to-earth and emotionally compelling characters.

However, all in all, season 2 of A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder is definitely edgier, more emotional, and much more intense compared to the first one, despite the fact that some things remain the same – such as the plot twists that draw you into the story and make you want to keep watching.
