Gold Land Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Kim Sung-hoon and written by Hwang Jo-yoon, 골드랜드 is led by Park Bo-young as Kim Hee-ju, alongside Kim Sung-cheol as Woogy, Lee Hyun-wook as Lee Do-kyung, Kim Hee-won as Kim Jin-man, Moon Jeong-hee as Yeo Seon-ok, Lee Kwang-soo as Park Ho-cheol and others.
Gold Land Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of Gold Land starts with a creepy introduction where Kim Hee-ju drives in the pouring rain while carrying a coffin-like box. She is not responding to anyone calling her and desperately asking for the box to be returned. However, before getting into the story, we find ourselves looking back two days prior, where we get to see what is more or less an ordinary lifestyle, but with financial difficulties. Her boyfriend Do-kyung is missing and hasn’t paid rent yet.
In the role of a security agent at the airport, Hee-ju’s nervousness is seen when she notices a person who seems to be searching for her. Instead of dealing with the situation directly, Hee-ju avoids herself from the man, implying that Hee-ju has landed herself in trouble. However, things are very tough for Do-kyung outside his home country; he is being pursued by some evil loan sharks, and Do-kyung calls Hee-ju for help to leave their flat.
The whole situation goes haywire when those henchmen barge into her room, and Hee-ju runs away from her home out of fright. Soon enough, Do-kyung plans something very shocking, and Hee-ju is asked to help him carry a coffin through the airport. She reluctantly accepts the proposal, putting herself in a difficult situation that automatically ruins her reputation. Once she reaches the airport, she manages to cheat the authorities into letting the coffin through.
Later, the act of betrayal commences when the box is introduced. Do-kyung engages in acts of betrayal against his confidant Woo-gi when he takes control of the scene by making use of the box in manipulation. The pressure builds up when the elements of money and betrayal come into play as Hee-ju finds herself amidst a scenario she cannot grasp. However, Hee-ju obeys Do-kyung’s command and waits alone in the greenhouse with the car.
Instead, things begin to fall apart. In disbelief, she sees Do-kyung beaten up, and without giving it a second thought, she starts running for her life as gangsters chase after her. It all culminates in a series of action-packed scenes that force her to act on instinct rather than reason. By the end of Gold Land Episode 1, she arrives at a mine shaft from her past, where she parks her car and unlocks the coffin to discover that it is lined with gold bars.
Gold Land Episode 2 Recap
In Episode 2 of Gold Land, there are many occurrences that take place in the past and in the present, giving us a chance to understand more about Hee-ju’s shattered life. She is seen to have had a hard life because of her mother, who was always distant to her, as well as occasionally cruel to her, treating her as just a poor fate.
On the other hand, in their timeline, Hee-ju is seen becoming increasingly worried and nervous as she tries to locate Do-kyung by making calls to hospitals, but secretly. The more she suspects, the more afraid she becomes to see that the police are investigating the strange case of a coffin at the airport. This becomes increasingly difficult for her since her co-worker starts asking questions about Do-kyung.
When Hee-ju at last confronts Do-kyung at the hospital, she discovers that the casket held gold, not any kind of drug. With this discovery, all bets are off. Instead of surrendering to the police, Do-kyung comes up with a well-thought-out plan where he will hide the gold, survive through the legal process, and at last make an escape with the money. Even when faced with the risk, Hee-ju complies and hides the gold somewhere far away.
But the dangers surrounding her increase. Despite the suspicion of some of his gang members, the criminal boss Ho-cheol continues his search for the missing gold. At the same time, Hee-ju returns to her native place only to find that her mother is ill, which creates for her both physical and emotional complications. Gold helps Hee-ju and her family survive.
It is in this context that Woogy encounters Hee-ju at the pawnshop, leading to the confrontation as soon as the former notices her bag and begins moving toward it, paying no attention whatsoever to her repeated warnings not to do it. At the end of the Gold Land Episode 2, attempting to fight for her freedom, she attempts to threaten the criminal, yet it all ends in seconds once he manages to overpower her and take away her gun.
Since Hee-ju no longer has a place to run to or hide in, all she can do is stand there hopelessly as Woogy begins to open her bag, and her secret will be unveiled. Inside the bag, there were some pieces of gold bars glimmering under the light of the camera. From this, we can deduce that Hee-ju finds out she is no longer the one playing the deadly game—but she is the game itself.
Gold Land Episode 1-2 Review
Firstly, it is essential to note that the first two episodes of Gold Land k-drama offer a captivating foundation. First of all, the thing which immediately attracted me is the absence of any surprising turn of events. Instead, one should emphasise that the choices made by all of the characters in the show have their repercussions. In particular, all the decisions taken by Hee-ju, be it assistance to Do-kyung or concealment of the gold, bring her into a vicious cycle.
What impressed me the most about the Gold Land kdrama was its tempo. Namely, the show offers no time for the storyline but allows enough space for the development of Hee-ju’s feelings. The feeling of suspense is present throughout the show, regardless of how serene some moments might be. The director uses the atmospheric factor to a considerable extent so that the viewers may appreciate the scenes and still feel the looming catastrophe.
Speaking about the performance, Park Bo-young delivers the performance on his own. The heroine’s character appears quite difficult to describe since she is not an ordinary heroine and is very different from the conventional heroes who usually become beloved protagonists in dramas. Hee-ju’s character wins the hearts of viewers owing to her frustrating and sympathetic nature.
Nevertheless, it is important to admit that the drama contains many stereotypes typical of other serials. First of all, the plot where the usual person becomes involved in illegal activities has already been explored. There are many clichés typical of this genre in the movie, but at the same time, the most important thing that attracts the attention of the audience is the psychological aspect of the play.
Gold Land Review (Episode 1-2): Summing Up
It is amazing how the Korean drama Gold Land manages to establish such a solid groundwork for an intriguing thriller, which centres on greed, survival struggle, and vulnerability of humankind. Though there is nothing new in the plot of the series, its strong emotional element, convincing acting, and increasing suspense ensure that the series is extremely engaging. With Hee-ju already completely involved in a life-threatening game and multiple forces pursuing her, it can be stated that the story is just beginning.
