A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Hwang Seung-gi and written by Yoo Su-ji, 너 말고 다른 연애 stars Seo Kang-jun as Ho Nam-gung and Ahn Eun-jin as Lee Mi-do, with Lee Joo-ahn as Han Tae-sung and Jo A-ram as Park Su-a in major roles, alongside Kim Nam-hee, Kim Mi-kyung, Lee Min-jae, Heo Ji-na, Lee Joo-won and others.

A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of A Love Other Than Yours opens with an interesting twist as Mi-do finds herself drinking at a bar where Nam-gung comes to see her. There is something unusual about their talk, and they both decide to return home. When it appears that the plot is developing into a typical romantic one, Mi-do puts a halt to everything, indicating that what is happening is a role-play, and that there is a more complex background between them than it may seem.

The narrative then shifts to detail their relationship. Nam-gung and Mi-do initially came across each other when they were both seven and maintained a close relationship through their schooling period. The two ended up in a romantic relationship at the age of 26, and they are currently in a ten-year relationship. They reside right next to each other’s rooms, with Nam-gung employed at Hunan Confectionery and Mi-do striving to become a successful film director. Their everyday life reveals the fact that they have completely based their lives on each other. Nam-gung especially pays a lot of attention to Mi-do.

The issue around getting married becomes very evident when Mi-do’s mother, Ma Sook-hee, invites the couple for dinner along with Mi-do’s brothers, Lee Young-do and Lee Wan-do. Ma Sook-hee reminds the couple that Mi-do has previously promised her that she will get married to Nam-gung if she becomes a director. Mi-do then states that they have been unable to have sex in six months, and then confesses that she had said so just to stop her mother from making queries. The couple now becomes serious about this issue. Nam-gung confesses that he wishes to get married to her, but Mi-do finds it difficult to give him an answer.

The professional troubles of Mi-do are about to take a turn for the worse. Mi-do had been involved in directing a movie titled Heartless, but after an unfortunate event involving actress Song Hae-na, she has backed out and is going to be replaced. Through a flashback scene, we find out that Mi-do had threatened Hae-na when she came to know that the actress was cancelling shoots due to her affair with a married man. However, Hae-na intentionally drowned in a pool, leaving Mi-do in trouble. Mi-do then goes to meet lawyer Han Tae-sung regarding the settlement issue but turns down signing it.

It becomes even more difficult for them when Nam-gung learns that Mi-do has had to deal with much more than what she told him about. She worked on an adult movie in order to pay for her lawyer’s fees. While they are at the police station after a conflict where Mi-do’s coworkers got involved, Nam-gung is angered by the fact that she did not tell him anything. At last, Mi-do admits that the presence of Nam-gung makes her feel weak and pathetic. After their return home, Mi-do decides that they have to break up. Her pain is intensified even further because she overhears Nam-gung discussing her with the help of the baby monitor.

Mi-do, however, did not hear what she expected to hear. Nam-gung revealed that he has been using her as his compass and motivation for doing his work. He is aware that the initial excitement of their relationship would fade away someday, yet he has no intention to stop loving her. Mi-do believes that she is now a burden and receiving care from him only makes her feel worse. They decide to part ways with each other. Nam-gung had secretly planned a proposal for her, yet after the separation, he throws away the ring.

It is a sad irony when they impulsively say “I love you” to each other in the morning before realising that they have parted ways. As for a flash-forward, it was shown in 2017, when they developed into lovers from friends when Nam-gung confessed his feelings and kissed Mi-do in the snow. At the end of A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1, the anniversary was not set on any particular day because it depended on the snow; they had nine snowfalls already, and they were on their tenth.

A Love Other Than Yours Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of A Love Other Than Yours begins with Mi-do having a hard time coping with the recent breakup. The viewer can see that she is crying while doing the adult movie until she gets drunk enough for Young-do and Wan-do to take her back home. On the other hand, Nam-gung is trying to get rid of all the traces of their past in his life. Nam-gung is throwing away all the things of Mi-do until Young-do tells him that Mi-do is missing and that they are strangers now. At that moment, the elevator door opens, and there stands Mi-do.

The conflicts between Mi-do and Tae-sung have not yet ended. He is trying to convince her to accept the settlement regarding the previous film, to the extent of stalking her whereabouts in order to catch her somewhere in a library. The interaction between them becomes quite hilarious when Mi-do flips the script on him. As she tapes down his confession regarding how he stalked her without permission, Tae-sung breaks her phone and tells her that he will buy her a new one. In turn, she throws a brick on his car windscreen.

Meanwhile, Nam-gung gets embroiled in some trouble at work because of Park Su-a. Su-a finds out that the sweet potatoes that were used in the chip production by the company have been substituted with imported material, which alters its taste. Nam-gung does not want anything to do with it at first, but eventually, he becomes the only one among many people in a crucial meeting who supports Su-a’s claims. Su-a has to find proof of her claims before the next board meeting, so Nam-gung starts to pay more attention to things at the plant.

This episode also allows for some reflection on the past for Mi-do and Nam-gung. Young-do puts them in an engaged couple contest because he wants the prize, which is a robot vacuum cleaner. In spite of being separated, they do very well until a heart rate contest reveals how used to each other they really are. Their heart rates remain unchanged since they are so comfortable around each other. There is a flashback to 2019 which shows the couple at an entirely different phase of their relationship. Mi-do shows up at Nam-gung’s workplace because her movie was cancelled and ends up creating a tasty chocolate chip flavour.

This memory further proves how well they used to support each other. Nam-gung was wrongly accused, and Mi-do advised him to come forward and speak for himself. Mi-do went back to the studio and took on a fight against the assistant director and finally managed to take up the challenge of gathering 500 people to take a picture. She succeeded in that and even managed to get Nam-gung as well. Their happiness in those days is in stark contrast to their present life.

Now, Nam-gung rescues Mi-do from an accident on the road when she follows the elderly woman carrying a pillow that was thrown by Nam-gung. Nam-gung asks her why she is crying, and their discussion results in the end of A Love Other Than Yours Episode 2. Mi-do worries about the fact that if they try again, they will eventually end up hating each other. Nam-gung says that he is equally scared, but he is more scared of losing her than anything else. He asks Mi-do to marry him.

A Love Other Than Yours Episode 1-2 Review

Based on these two episodes, I must say that I am completely in love with the A Love Other Than Yours K-drama, as it doesn’t consider a decade-long relationship as one that should have either a happy or unhappy ending. It is evident that Nam-gung and Mi-do love each other; however, they no longer exist at the same stage of their lives. Nam-gung has a steady occupation and is quite sure of what he wants; on the contrary, Mi-do faces a lot of troubles at her job and tries extremely hard to convince herself that she will be a great director.

Seo Kang-jun and Ahn Eun-jin create an engaging central couple due to the extensive backstory of their characters. The love Nam-gung feels for Mi-do can be seen in all those little actions he performs, ranging from worrying about her apartment and remembering her mood swings to taking care of her regardless of the fact that they are no longer together.

Seo Kang-jun creates a calm warmth in the character of Nam-gung, which is especially effective since Nam-gung is not the type of man who declares his feelings all the time. Ahn Eun-jin’s Mi-do is quite hard to understand, which is why this character is so intriguing. Mi-do is frustrated with herself and disappointed in her career choice; she finds it increasingly hard to be in a relationship that makes her feel dependent on Nam-gung.

In addition to that, I like the way A Love Other Than Yours Ep 2 develops the plot rather than limiting it to just the breakup story. Whenever Han Tae-sung enters the scene with Mi-do, he definitely brings a totally different atmosphere into the show. The fights between them are very amusing since they do not intend to give up, and Mi-do is definitely in a stronger position now compared to the person she used to be in Episode 1. In addition to that, it is interesting how Park Su-a’s storyline is developing since her investigation is a totally different thing for Nam-gung to handle.

A Love Other Than Yours Review: Summing Up

It is safe to say that the flashbacks are the best element in this Korean drama A Love Other Than Yours. While the story of the present-day relationship may be confusing at first as to why the couple is still together after all this time, the flashbacks begin to answer this question. When one sees them back then as a couple and watches Nam-gung notice whenever Mi-do is sad and how easily they could support each other’s dreams, the present-day distance between them looks even more sorrowful.
