Super Subbu Review
The Netflix series Super Subbu revolves around Subramanyam “Subbu,” an immature individual with an overly conservative upbringing that has made him quite awkward, insecure, and afraid of letting down his authoritative father. Wanting to show everyone that he can accomplish great things, Subbu takes up a job from the government as a Sex Education Officer in a rural village called Maakipur, where it is taboo for people to talk about sexual intimacy due to the high population of babies in the village. Being completely unaware of anything about the topic, Subbu ends up teaching others who are equally embarrassed by the topic.
What works right away in the case of Netflix’s Super Subbu is the irony at the core of its plot. The guy tasked with educating all the people in a village regarding sexual health is one who barely knows anything about it due to decades of being afraid and ashamed of talking about such subjects. While they could easily make him into an exaggerated caricature, they present him as someone whose insecurity stems from the way he was raised, which was in an environment where discussing the basics of the human body was seen as taboo. This adds an interesting layer to his personality that I did not expect.

Netflix Telugu series Super Subbu must also get props for bringing up topics which continue to be considered taboo in most Indian homes. Right from menstruation, contraception, consent, masturbation, to family planning, everything Subbu tries to teach ends up unveiling layers of embarrassment at Maakipur. There is one particular instance which I liked from the series where Subbu tries to explain the concept of consent to a group of women who have not been brought up to think of saying “no.” The sequence manages to come off as funny due to the reactions of the village women; however, it is also a subtle reminder of the normalisation of some inequalities.
Sundeep Kishan leads the series with admirable sincerity. Kishan does not portray Subbu as a total fool, even in situations where he should be a total fool, because of how outrageous they can get. Rather, it is through the character’s nervous demeanour and timid mannerisms that Kishan makes Subbu endearing. The fact that the series keeps throwing up obstacles at Subbu does not make Kishan turn the character into a character one finds annoying.
Mithila Palkar shares the charm of Swathi, not just being another love interest but one of the few individuals who actually stand by Subbu without making fun of him. It is quite refreshing to see such realistic exchanges that bring a little fun into the series. In any case, there is always something about the writing that did not do justice to her aspirations and made her character less significant than it should have been in relation to Subbu’s quest.

One of the best performers in the series is Murali Sharma, who plays the role of Subbu’s father. He is not presented as an outrageous villain, but rather as a person whose strict belief system has inadvertently destroyed his son’s confidence over a period of years. Each scene with them both always has an element of emotional conflict as Subbu acts as if he is afraid of his father at all times. The father-son conflict appears even more interesting than the conflict of the villagers with regard to their attitudes towards sex education.
However, the Telugu series Super Subbu tends to lose track of its primary storyline by presenting several other parallel stories simultaneously. There are political rivalries, love affairs, confusion, alcohol, and several other characters which keep diverting the primary storyline all the time. While on their own, none of these plot lines is bad enough, they certainly tend to make the entire series look rather chaotic. Right when the main storyline is beginning to pick up emotionally, the story diverts somewhere else in order to entertain the audience.
Humour is also an aspect that has some positives and negatives about it. There are certain jokes which do work in the context because they are a result of the awkward situation related to sex education. Seeing people make mistakes in understanding certain things and being overly embarrassed in doing so results in funny scenes at times. At the same time, there is the use of typical Telugu humour techniques, and misunderstandings which become predictable after a while.

Netflix Super Subbu Review: Summing Up
The 2026 Super Subbu series is definitely a commendable effort in trying to tell a story that does not often feature in mainstream entertainment in Telugu. It features a heartfelt leading role, plenty of reflective moments, and an essential message, all packaged within the comedy package. On the other hand, uneven pacing, undeveloped subplots, and cluttered plot make it fail to achieve what it was set out to do. It is a series whose appeal comes mainly from what it was trying to achieve and not really what it delivered.
