The premise of Netflix’s Voicemails For Isabelle revolves around Jill, who is a young lady finding it difficult to come out of the death of her dear sister Isabelle. The two sisters enjoyed a very close relationship. In fact, even after her death, she leaves voicemails on the old phone number in an effort to come out of her mourning. Little does she know that this phone number has been assigned to a new owner named Wes, a realtor.
The whole setup reminds one of the type of romantic comedy that needs an enormous amount of suspension of disbelief. It even gets to points when the very premise threatens to cross the line into something rather awkward. Yet, what kept me going was the fact that the movie was emotionally sincere. Never did the movie use Jill’s sorrow as just another plot element meant to facilitate her romantic encounter. Her sorrow stayed central to everything she did, emotionally speaking.
What I found most appealing was that the Netflix film Voicemails For Isabelle recognised that loss is usually not such an out-of-control process in life that it seems in movies. Jill is never in tears or giving great monologues about her loss. Rather, it is the little rituals and chats she still maintains that help Isabelle stay present in her daily routine. Voicemails are no longer just messages – they have become a lifeline to someone she cannot bear to say goodbye to yet.
In many ways, the bond between Jill and Isabelle could be argued to be even more captivating than the main love story of the movie. The amount of screen time dedicated to their relationship is long enough for Isabelle not to be perceived as a figure from past life experiences only. We realise why it is so hard for Jill after losing her, as we get to know their history through memories and anecdotes. Their chemistry is full of warmth, comedy and genuine affection.
She handles that weight very well indeed. Zoey Deutch has always been one of the most dependable actors working in the contemporary rom-com genre, but here she gets an opportunity to do more than just be likeable. While she adds fun and energy to the comedic moments involving Jill, she also reveals the underlying sadness that lurks under her happy persona. There are several instances when she does not say much, but her facial expressions say it all.
The character of Nick Robinson works very well for Wes in this regard. Although it would have been easy for Wes to become a hard character to like, especially because of all the secrets that he holds, Robinson does a good job in making the character seem real. This is because he is seen as a person who is truly touched by the vulnerability of Jill, not as one who takes advantage of her.
The actual romance in the Netflix movie Voicemails For Isabelle is successful because of its gradual development. Unlike many films, which depend only on big scenes, this film concentrates on talks, interactions, and feelings. It is the absence of certain feelings in their lives which makes Jill and Wes come together. There is a natural flow in their interactions that is pleasing to see.
However, there are certain shortcomings to Voicemails For Isabelle. The primary drawback of the movie is that it lacks unpredictability. In no time at all does the audience realise what’s going to happen next in the plot. Moreover, most emotional events come right when one expects them. The movie has too much in common with other romantic comedies.
Despite these flaws, however, the good things about the movie have never been obscured. The script written by Leah McKendrick realises that the most successful romantic relationships are always more than just romanticism. In this case, love is coupled with healing, with remembering, and with the bravery to live on.

However, all in all, Voicemails for Isabelle works since it never fails to remind you of the beating heart that lies behind its romantic storyline. Featuring great performances by Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, a truly heartfelt depiction of sisterhood, as well as plenty of comedy to offset its dark undertones, the movie gives you everything it takes for a great romantic movie.
