Amazon MX Player’s Ab Hoga Hisaab uses a situation that is not uncommon among many households in Punjab, which is the desire for people to migrate out of their country in search of a better life abroad, especially to Canada. Instead of just making this notion of migration an easy ideal, the show makes use of desperation to explain how easy it is for people to be exploited.
The focal point of the Ab Hoga Hisaab series revolves around Bobby and Bunty Manocha, brothers whose lives revolve around ambition, sacrifice, and uncontrollable circumstances. Bobby is the responsible brother who always places his family above himself, whereas Bunty is the passionate one who acts out of emotions. It was very clear that the brotherly bond between these two brothers was the best thing about this drama series. Even when the plot strays off, the emotional bond between them holds the plot together.
The performance of Shaheer Sheikh as Bobby is very sincere. The actor depicts the struggles of the character without indulging in too much drama, so that the audience understands the weight on the shoulders of the protagonist. Although at times, it would have been great if the character had been more intense, the actor still succeeds in making him a likeable one. Another great performance is delivered by Avinash Mishra as Bunty, who is a frustrating character due to his actions.
The story really picks up pace once Bobby’s world is turned upside down by events connected with Bunty. As what initially seemed like a domestic affair slowly starts to expose an evil underworld running behind the scenes, mystery, danger, and the prospect of revenge come into play, elements which would have certainly helped raise the level of the entire series.
However, this is where Amazon MX Player series Ab Hoga Hisaab starts feeling like a case of mixed blessings for me. The basic premise of the film has enough potential for a gripping thriller, but the writing often strays from its path and ends up compromising on the tension. Rather than focusing on the aspects of crime and investigation which make up the bulk of the plot, the story often veers off into romantic problems and familial issues that seem superfluous.
However, there have been many times when I was about to see the series finally make an important discovery, but it instead takes a detour into some extensive character relationship issues. Hence, the tension is not as intense as it needs to be. However, the main intrigue is quite interesting.
The character of Goldy is played by Sanjay Kapoor, who is a strong man whose influence is felt even in the lives of the main characters. Kapoor manages to give his character some screen presence, and any time he comes on the screen, it gives the episode some gravitas. But personally, I have never felt Goldy to be as menacing as he was meant to be from the script.
Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia succeeds in what little she has been provided with and gives emotional depth to the narrative. Her character has an important part to play in the drama of the personal struggles that take place in the story. Mouni Roy manages to leave an impression even when there are not many chances for her to shine.
Technically, everything looks very refined in the series. The Punjab environment is portrayed in great detail, which adds to the authenticity of the series’ universe. The cinematography lends a certain groundedness to the series, combining the warmth of family relationships with the dark shades of crimes and treachery.
The thing that really saves Amazon MX Player Ab Hoga Hisaab series from becoming too boring is the fact that the series never forgets its soul. It still manages to be emotionally strong, because the chemistry between Bobby and Bunty works well, as well as the ideas of sacrifice, loyalty and broken dreams. Even if the plot meanders, there is enough honesty in the characters to make people watch the series.

Ultimately, Ab Hoga Hisaab is not a series that is either a disappointment or a definite success. It starts off with an interesting concept, good acting, and some emotionally powerful scenes, but it is unable to create any suspense and becomes distracted by side stories that don’t contribute much to the whole experience. There were definitely some enjoyable parts of the ride, especially when it came to the social aspects of the story.
