Ticket to Heaven Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2 of Ticket to Heaven opens up by showing the consequences of the bag situation. While Kongkit gets in trouble because of his actions, so do Barth and Tanrak for not reporting their behaviour. Tanrak is especially upset about that since he was supposed to be teaching Barth to act properly. On the other hand, Master Phak tries to persuade Barth to become more sociable and get closer to other students.

As recommended by Father Arnon, Tanrak requests that Barth have lunch with him. Even though Barth is teased by Kongdech and Ryu at lunch, he reacts well to their jests. He even appears more interested in Tanrak’s concerns than in the teasing. The bond they have built extends into class, where Barth sits next to Tanrak, saying that he cannot see what the board says. Later on, Barth realises that Tanrak was praying about their interaction and feeling guilty. Barth tries to make amends and has Tanrak tutor him, spending more time with him.

However, as Barth continues with his tutoring lessons, his laid-back attitude soon starts conflicting with Tanrak’s rigidity with regard to the rules. Barth sneaks out to get himself some food, makes fun of the fact that he is tempted, and always challenges Tanrak to stick to the rules. The Christmas-related activities serve as yet another opportunity for Barth to stick around with Tanrak. As he successfully arranges the selection process to join the choir groups, he can spend the day with Tanrak. Together, they discover a love song associated with the name of Tanrak and have a heart-to-heart talk concerning Tanrak’s deceased mother.

The point of change emotionally comes as Tanrak gradually comes to realise that his feelings for Barth may be developing into something much more complex. After being scolded for speaking past the curfew hour, the two spend some time alone outside their dormitory, eating snacks and engaging in light-hearted banter.

Back in the dormitory, Barth proceeds to talk casually, not being aware of the tempest that is happening inside the head of Tanrak. Tanrak, unable to sleep, finds himself reliving all the memories they shared. He believes that these feelings go against his religion, yet the harder he attempts to control himself, the stronger these feelings get. In the end, after becoming too confused, guilty, afraid and overwhelmed, he gets out of bed and goes into the bathroom.

In the last sequence, we can see how Tanrak struggles to gain control over himself. Religious symbols and teachings that have been drilled into his head throughout the years come to his mind as he experiences new emotions. At the end of Ticket to Heaven Episode 2, he locks himself up in a bathroom stall and faces these new feelings. This episode ends at this high point.

Ticket to Heaven Episode 2 Review

Thai BL Ticket to Heaven Episode 2 was one episode that actually got me to be amazed by how well it dealt with the theme of Tanrak’s emotional awakening. Many coming-of-age stories usually tend to go straight for romance, but this episode does things differently. Instead of jumping right into the act of falling in love, it focuses on discovering love and its many facets. Everything just becomes more realistic as a result since Tanrak isn’t acting out of the blue, but he is discovering new emotions within himself.

What impressed me the most was the performance of Fourth as Tanrak. Though he does not speak much in the episode, it is clear from his expressions that he is feeling many things at once. There is fear, curiosity, guilt, longing, and worry, and Fourth conveys all of this using his facial expressions perfectly. The silence of some parts of the episode was very powerful, and Fourth carried them well. I feel like his depiction of a conflicted boy torn between faith and passion was real, not exaggerated.

Gemini should also get a lot of credit for Barth. While Tanrak is burdened with expectations and self-doubt, Barth manages to inject warmth and spontaneity into every situation. It may even be fair to say that he unconsciously challenges Tanrak, just through his own personality. One of my favourite parts about Barth was the fact that he became more at ease with other classmates as he became Tanrak’s emotional refuge.

Apart from the acting talent, the Thai drama Ticket to Heaven production deserves much praise for its ability to enhance the story. Cinematography, music, and religion combine to help the story be told. Scenes which could be mere conversations have been made more interesting through the direction. The themes of temptation, redemption, and identity flow freely without seeming out of place or tiring. The scenes with the choir, the pianos, and the late-night chats add to this intimate atmosphere.
