Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Review: Directed by Lee Sang-yeob and written by Song Jae-jung and Kim Kyung-ran, 유미의 세포들 시즌3 stars Kim Go-eun as Kim Yu-mi and Kim Jae-won as Shin Soon-rok, with Jeon Seok-ho, Choi Daniel, and Cho Hye-jung in key roles. Based on the well-loved webtoon by Lee Dong-geon, the last season continues to tell its story through the combination of live-action and the imaginary world of Yu-mi and her cells.
Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 1 Recap
Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 1 starts with Yumi’s father proudly boasting about his daughter’s achievements as a romance novelist, noting that she has made good progress. Having become a successful author, Yumi is now even researching topics such as bungee jumping in order to write her next story, although it fails to inspire her imagination as she had hoped.
While Yumi’s career is going great, she still cannot manage with the problem of writer’s block. The young woman notes that her life has become peaceful and boring, while in reality, things are much worse. Most of her cells have become inactive; only the Writer Cell remains active, which accounts for Yumi’s lack of inspiration.

However, things start to change when a new PD, Shin Soon-rok, is appointed for her production because her former PD suffers an accident. Soon-rok’s cool and direct demeanour clashes right from the beginning with Yumi. The uncomfortable meetings they share, whether it is at the bus stop or a snack bar, emphasise his social ignorance, thus piquing her annoyance more than before.
Towards the latter part of the Episode 1 of Yumi’s Cells Season 3, her irritation gets the best of her when she receives criticism for some details she had written, with him going to the extent of ridiculing her research. This serves as the emotional stimulus that triggers the sleeping cells, such as Dislike Cell and even Profanity Cell.

Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 2 Recap
Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 2 takes a closer look at how Yumi becomes increasingly angry with Soon-rok. The chaos that results from her frustration even interrupts her sleep. In an attempt to gain some control back, Yumi indulges herself in acts of petty vengeance, such as purchasing all of the snacks before Soon-rok could.
Nevertheless, there is a slight shift in their relationship. Soon-rok offers constructive criticism about Yumi’s writing skills, revealing a side of him that she did not expect. Despite this, her Pride Cell does not allow her to accept it. Soon-rok’s maturity is evidenced by his ability to remain calm under pressure in a stressful parking scenario, thus exposing his reliable traits. While Yumi is momentarily taken off guard and compliments him, he answers in a manner that makes her question her judgment once again.

In one shocking twist, Yumi discovers that Soon-rok asked to be transferred from her project since he cannot handle her anymore. This insults Yumi, making her confront him directly, marking a cliff-hanger to the end of episode 2 of Yumi’s Cells Season 3.
Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 3 Recap
In Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 3, from the Perspective of Soon-rok introduces us to the reasons for the character’s introverted nature. The explanation is that Soon-rok uses a low-power mode to save his energy. The narrative moves back to the present day, and the tension between Yumi is still evident. At first, Soon-rok’s reaction does not appear adequate to her expectations, but the situation leaves them no choice but to connect.
Within Yumi’s mind, however, there is an important change – that of Love Cell awakening again. In addition to the “lightning bolt” that touches her cell village, it represents the awakening of those emotions that she has been suppressing all this time. Although Soon-rok convinces her of the fact that the reassignment was just a logistical one, something else starts to form. At the end of the third episode of the third season of Yumi’s Cells, Yu-mi finally accepts her feelings towards Soon-rok despite her objections from Writer Cell.

Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 4 Recap
Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 4 also delves into the ongoing relationship between Yumi and Soon-rok amid another business trip. Yumi realises that she has changed since she no longer gets annoyed when Soon-rok does not talk; rather, she finds this behaviour comforting.
Later, another character comes into play—a writer named Joo Ho. The friendly and outgoing nature of Joo Ho is in contrast with that of Soon-rok, resulting in a little bit of conflict. Yumi is also confused by the actions of both Soon-rok and Joo Ho, such as the latter’s departure during an outdoor activity, while the former surprises her with movie tickets. By the end of episode 4 of Yumi’s Cells season 3, even her cells have begun discussing whether she will go out with one of the boys, thus forming a fascinating love triangle.

Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Review (Episode 1-4)
Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 1 to 4, for me, really feels like the show is entering a much quieter but more introspective phase of Yumi’s life. First off, it is quite clear that there is no drama of heartbreak involved anymore in this story, but something rather unique – an absence of emotion. It is amazing how writer’s block can become more personal when your own life is too comfortable for you, with your cells having become stagnant.
Not only did I not expect Shin Soon-rok to become endearing this soon, but it’s quite difficult given how the character seems annoying at first glance. From the character’s harshness, buying the last bungeoppang without hesitation, to making a comment here and there about her work, all of this comes off as purposely obnoxious. However, once you get past the first few episodes and dig deeper into his character through the “low power mode” plot line, one begins to understand him from the perspective of how the story of Yumi’s Cells unfolds.

The aspect of the series that resonates with me the most throughout these episodes would be the resurrection of Love Cell and how drastic a change this is shown to be. Not only is the depiction of lightning hitting inside the Cell Village aesthetically pleasing, but it’s also representative of an emotional turmoil tearing apart Yumi’s life. It’s evident when she begins to fancy Soon-rok in these minor moments, such as the train ride when nothing much occurs; however, everything has already changed.
With episode 4 and the introduction of Joo Ho, the storyline gains an additional dimension, and I love the fact that the story is not trying to be too direct when it comes to romance. This creates a situation for Yumi that she herself cannot figure out, even though she knows what her cells feel. The offer by Soon-rok to go to the movies may look insignificant, but considering his character, it becomes very significant.

Yumi’s Cells Season 3 Episode 1-4 Review: Summing Up
All in all, these four initial episodes of K-drama Yumi’s Cells season 3 appear to be well thought out and character-driven. There’s little that’s plot-driven about these episodes; it’s more about an emotional awakening, and I’m keen to find out how much further the show takes things with this new iteration of Yu-mi, one who can finally feel again.
