The first aspect that pops into mind when thinking of the Netflix docuseries Worst Ex Ever Season 2 is how surprisingly alike all the stories sound at the very beginning. The beginning of each episode shows seemingly harmless couples who are sweet, gentle, and have nothing frightening about them. However, little by little, the movie makes its audience realise that the love that seems to develop between two people becomes love of control and domination really quickly. And that is where the show gets its power. There is no need for shocking scenes; just the suspenseful plot does the job.
It is hard to single out the scariest episode since all the cases of Worst Ex Ever Season 2 are horrifying; however, I believe the episode about Wade Wilson is among the most frightening episodes of this series. Hearing the story of Kelly Matthews was not only disgusting but infuriating because of how she got overlooked in the beginning. This episode brilliantly brings to the viewer’s attention the consequences of negligence. The problem is not about the danger that one man poses to people; it is about the easy way he can go unnoticed.
In the second example, where Geoffrey Paschel is at the centre of events, the mood is slightly different since it reflects a pattern of abuse instead of a continuous increase in the aggressor’s actions. The reason that frightened me the most about this event is that the very same pattern of abuse kept recurring in several victims over the years. Thus, I came to the conclusion that many times, such kind of abuse can remain unnoticed for years to come due to the aggressor’s charismatic nature and regular behaviour.
For me, however, it becomes scarier in the third example, which is the murder of Joyce Lewis-Pelzer. The reasons for my fear are not only in the violence itself but also in the perpetrator’s motives. Although the murder of Shawndell McLeod is frightening by itself, it becomes much scarier when the woman starts keeping secrets from her new partner. The main point here is that Joyce did not confess to her new girlfriend to feel guilty or to repent, but to have a better bargaining chip and control her.
One thing that I liked in this episode is Katie taking part in the whole process. Instead of being silent, Katie helped the law enforcement agency record Joyce’s confession. It is quite courageous since there were certain dangers associated with it. Even more, the episode also does not fail to mention that after that, the behaviour of Joyce changed once again, and she managed to kill another person.
The final episode of Worst Ex Ever Season 2, featuring Scott Freeman, is like a true crime thriller because Karen is kidnapped as part of an interstate kidnapping. Still, the documentary focuses on the victim’s perspective. She fights for her life by sending signals and notes from restrooms. Such a storyline always holds one’s attention, because one wants Karen to survive, although the viewers know the end beforehand.
The thing I liked most about the Worst Ex Ever Season 2 documentary, in general, is the fact that the emphasis has been put on the victim’s point of view. This documentary doesn’t add unnecessary elements of drama to the crimes committed. It lets survivors retell what happened from their side. This way, everything becomes much more realistic, although perhaps harder to watch.

I will also admit the fact that Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever Season 2 docuseries is pretty hard to watch from start to finish. There were moments when I needed to pause the playback because the series doesn’t beat around the bush in terms of its narration and the impact it produces. However, it certainly adds to the realism of the series, which means it is incredibly hard to watch.
From a technical perspective, the rate at which it progressed was fairly impressive. Unlike most other series during the same season, each episode was allowed to proceed at its own rate without being hurried or slowed. The usage of reenactments was sparing yet useful as it enabled the viewers to immerse themselves in the story without compromising on the actual footage.
What impressed me most about this Worst Ex Ever Season 2 series was its relevance to the situation presented through it. Although the situations described might have been dramatised, the warning signals provided in terms of manipulation, isolation, and control may very well occur in relationships of different sorts. While the series does not offer any specific solutions to the problem, its advocacy in terms of awareness is more than enough.

Finally, one could say that the worst ex ever 2 is definitely an emotionally charged documentary. While it may not always be easy to watch, it certainly is very powerful, for the documentary is quite successful both in its content and presentation.
