Gold Land Episode 3-4 Review: Written by Hwang Jo-yoon and directed by Kim Sung-hoon, 골드랜드 continues to build its dark, morally complex world with the cast led by Park Bo-young as Kim Hee-ju. She is joined by Kim Sung-cheol as Woogy, Lee Hyun-wook as Lee Do-kyung, Kim Hee-won as Kim Jin-man, Moon Jeong-hee as Yeo Seon-ok, Lee Kwang-soo as Park Ho-cheol, and Jeon Jin-oh as Han Cheol-jung.
Gold Land Episode 3 Recap
In Gold Land Episode 3, Hee-ju realises that she cannot handle the gold bars by herself. Woogy comes to her aid, providing an offer of help with the condition that Do-kyung is unavailable since he is in the hospital. Despite some reservations, Hee-ju considers collaborating with Woogy. After questioning her relationship with Do-kyung and their acquaintance, she remains tight-lipped, which indicates some level of mistrust. But things get really interesting when Woogy informs Hee-ju that selling the 10 kg gold bar is not something she can do just like that.
In the course of their discussion, Hee-ju mentions that she may be able to provide close to a hundred gold bars but is unwilling to reveal where they are located. From here, an agreement of sorts comes into play, and they decide to share their earnings equally by working together. Woogy explains his strategy for dividing the gold into pieces and selling them under false names, promising Hee-ju that he will take care of everything. Although Hee-ju is willing, her hesitation indicates that she is always wary of him.
In parallel with that, Jin-man Kim embarks on an investigation into a very strange case, which involves a dead person and a coffin that is missing. Rather than adhering to the normal process for such investigations, Kim steps in and assumes full control of the matter, pointing towards deeper motives. The conversations between Jin-man and Park Ho-cheol confirm that there was a valuable thing, probably gold, associated with the missing coffin.
However, when it comes to Hee-ju’s private life, the gravity of her history starts to show its colours. It is revealed that she had a complicated relationship with her mother, which is brought out when an emotionally hurtful conversation between them ensues, with the latter speaking with remorse and bitterness about the former’s abandonment. Yet, there seems to be hope for healing in a scene wherein Hee-ju allows her mother to lean on her shoulders inside a bus.
However, the tone becomes more sinister once Hee-ju and Woogy encounter Honseok in order to dismantle the gold bars. When President Noh comes in unexpectedly and causes an upheaval, Honseok is able to hold him captive, but he faces the ethical quandary of killing President Noh, leading to discord among them. Hee-ju, who was already disturbed, requests Woogy not to end a life unless it is absolutely necessary. However, at the end of Episode 3 of Gold Land, Hee-ju ends up striking Cheol-jung with a golf club to save her mother from danger, yet, to her horror, her mother takes responsibility and calls the cops, leaving Hee-ju in a predicament of sorts.
Gold Land Episode 4 Recap
Episode 4 of Gold Land starts with flashbacks and presents the audience with an insight into the former life of Hee-ju before all the trouble took place. This episode starts with flashbacks from her life when she used to work in a hotel, and even then, she could not get rid of the manipulation of Cheol-jung.
Everything changes for her when she goes to work in the casino of the Golden Land, where she comes across Lee Do-kyung. While Cheol-jung was aggressive and mean, Do-kyung is a charmer and seems very interested in her from the start. Do-kyung shows her how to take risks and gamble. As a result, she wins money and realises what freedom is all about. For some time, it seems like she has found a way to escape her dark past.
In contrast, the timeline currently underway has an entirely different tale to tell. Hee-ju is now actively engaged in the process of mining and managing gold, even questioning her own motivations and asking herself whether her love for Do-kyung was sincere or motivated purely by survival instincts.
However, the investigation of Jin-man continues to gain momentum. Upon analysing the security video recordings, he starts to develop suspicions that the person responsible for transporting the gold may be a woman. He is able to pinpoint two suspects, among whom is Hee-ju. This aside, bonds between the characters begin to get stronger, particularly after Jin-man’s observations of the interaction of Seon-ok with other people.
However, the conflict grows as Hee-ju attempts to sort out her problem with Cheol-jung by bribing him with money to get away from her once and for all. Although he initially accepts her offer, the real character in him soon makes an appearance as he starts to try to steal the money while breaking his side of the bargain. This event turns out to be a major turning point in the episode. Before he gets too violent, Woogy intervenes, asking Hee-ju’s permission to kill him.
At the end of Gold Land Episode 4, Woogy murders Cheol-jung in a violent and shocking finale, all the while Hee-ju observes silently. The entire scene is terrifying, not only for the murder but also because of how accepting Hee-ju has to become, and it shows a drastic change in Hee-ju’s persona.
Gold Land Episode 3-4 Review
I love the way the drama right now is revolving around making Hee-ju take sides within the shades of grey while maintaining the story engaging. Episode 3 of Gold Land kdrama succeeds in making the alliances and enmities clear for the audience, in particular those that involve Hee-ju and Woogy. What I enjoyed about their relationship was its authenticity, not based on mutual trust but out of necessity. As a result, the interactions between these two characters remain uncertain.
It was interesting because there were layers of emotions involved. Watching the scene where Hee-ju is interacting with her mother was hard yet essential in developing her motivations further. I can clearly see that there are many unresolved issues, and that is why she acts like that. However, there is also the procedural aspect of Jin-man investigating, which creates an additional level of tension.
Episode 4 of Gold Land kdrama really helped me understand and appreciate her history in the right way. Not only do they shed light on her story, but they also make her history into something else entirely. The hope and relief she first feels being with Do-kyung becomes very bittersweet because of what we know about her future.
The ending also appeals to me. The acceptance of Cheol-jung’s death by Hee-ju is not depicted with much drama. She accepts the death calmly and even numbly, making her decision quite meaningful to watch. This scene represents for me the turning point of the series from running away from danger to doing anything to be alive. Another Woogy becomes rather intriguing after that, since he does not have many moral restrictions.
Kdrama Gold Land Episodes 3-4 Review: Summing Up
Overall, these episodes do well in adding depth to the plot and improving relationships among the characters. The inclusion of crime and psychological issues is what makes the story captivating, despite the difficulty in reading some parts of it. As Hee-ju crosses an important boundary while Jin-man uncovers secrets surrounding his family, the story seems to have just begun, and I am excited to find out where the story will head next.
