The Sandman 2 Volume 1 Recap
Volume 1 of The Sandman 2 picks up Dream’s life from where the last Season 1 left him, with his estranged family and his own guilt. The book begins with Delirium appearing on Dream’s doorstep with a peculiar request—to locate their missing brother, Destruction, who had disappeared centuries ago. Though Destruction had repeatedly told them not to look for him, Delirium is determined to reunite the family. Dream, though, has different plans—he wants to see Nada, the woman he had sent to Hell and now pines for.
Dream and Delirium join forces to locate Destruction by tracking down those who had once known him. They visit old mortals like Bernard Capax, forgotten gods like Ishtar, and finally, to the doorstep of their own brother Destiny. Innocent lives are lost in the process—Capax is accidentally killed, Ishtar is killed when Dream visits her, and even Wanda, their human friend, is killed in the chaos. These losses lead Dream to consider the price of what he’s doing and how far he will go in order to set things right.

Their quest brings them ultimately to Dream’s estranged son, Orpheus, an immortal disembodied head stranded on a desert island. Orpheus knows where Destruction is—but only if Dream grants him his long-held desire: to die finally. Bound by ancient prohibitions against shedding family blood, Dream realises that denying him will leave the world to apocalyptic destruction. And so he complies.
The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 Ending Explained
Volume 1 of The Sandman Season 2 ends on a dramatic, tragic decision: Dream murders Orpheus in order to complete his sister Delirium’s mission and atone for his own guilt. But this act may have cost him at a much greater price than he realises.
Why Did Dream Kill Orpheus?
Dream’s decision to put an end to his son’s centuries of suffering wasn’t one he made lightly. Orpheus, forced to exist as a head after he was unable to save his wife Eurydice from the underworld, had begged for death for centuries. When Dream and Delirium arrive to take him, he’ll merely direct them to where Destruction can be found—so long as Dream will kill him in the process.

Fundamentally, this act is Dream’s effort to try to make things right for a lifetime of coldness. He had spurned Orpheus’ requests in the past out of pride and fear of violating cosmic law. But now, softened by his experiences with Nada, Wanda, and Delirium, Dream comes to see that sometimes doing the right thing involves violating the rules. The instant he drives his hand through Orpheus’ skull is horribly painful, but also cathartic for both father and son. Too bad it seals Dream’s doom.
What are the consequences of Orpheus’s death?
Dream’s deed is one of the multiverse’s worst taboos—murdering one’s own kin. Whatever Orpheus requests, shedding family blood causes a ripple effect throughout the universe. The Three Fates, bearers of destiny, death, and damnation, sever the thread that keeps Dream’s life intact at the end of the play. That is the end of his story, at least that we know.
The consequences are not yet fully known, but the Fates tell how Dream has begun a war between life and death, one into which can be drawn the Endless, the gods, and other supernatural entities. Whether Dream will be drawn into the war or not is not yet known, but one thing is certain: his life is going to become a whole lot more perilous and interesting.

What Did Destruction Really Want?
When Delirium and Dream finally arrive at Destruction, they find a man who knew years and years ago that he made the correct choice in abandoning his kingdom. Destruction claims that despite leaving his kingdom behind, creation and destruction exist in the world—evidence that the Endless do not possess quite so much control over humans as they had believed.
His absence is one of love and not of evil. Destruction did not return because something inside him could not stand the pain he caused in his name. In his final words to Dream, he reminds him that love is the only motivation to do anything. This is a blinding message that leaves a permanent impression on Dream, who understands that much of his recent actions—dispensing mercy to Nada, forgiving Delirium, and at last putting Orpheus to rest—are all for love and not duty. But even love, Destruction cautions, has a cost.

What’s Next for Dream?
When Orpheus is returned to the Dreaming, Dream orders him buried with no marker, hoping to keep the act a secret. But we know secrets aren’t kept—the Fates have already seen the deed. Dream’s breakdown in his own chambers indicates a man coming apart. He has done what he thought he was required to do, but the price is already eating away at him.
What happens to Dream probably involves coping with the consequences of his choice. The reference to a war in the making, the imagery of the yarn being cut, and the hardness of the rest of the Endless all indicate that Season 2 Volume 2 will be grappling with the collapse of Dream’s regime and even his identity. Does he weather the storm? Or will someone else assume Dream’s position?

As Volume 1 concludes, The Sandman leaves us with unsettling questions about responsibility, love, sacrifice, and the cost of redemption. Dream may have achieved peace with Orpheus and Destruction, but at what cost? With the Fates already conspiring against him, the final volume does not merely promise an ending, but a reckoning.
