Tempest Episode 6-7 Review: Coming off the emotional storm of last week, where Mun-ju (Jun Ji-hyun) beginning to reaffirm herself as a force to be reckoned with, and San-ho (Gang Dong-won) revealing himself as a guardian beyond measure, and with that telltale kiss changing the rules of their collaboration, the show 북극성 only becomes more potent through the next episodes. Directed by Heo Myung-haeng and Kim Hee-won and created by Jeong Seo-Kyung, the Disney+ political thriller solidifies its grip with new twists that push Mun-ju to confront both the personal lies left behind by her late husband as well as the greater conspiracy looming against her nation.

With acts of vulnerable yet powerful tension, the next few episodes carry the ember sparked before and show once again that each of their choices from this point has cataclysmic results.

Tempest Episode 6 Recap

Episode 6 of Tempest opens with an ostensibly calm tone as the voice of Frank Sinatra crooning a Christmas carol arises from the radio as a harbinger of ominous stillness prior to a storm. Mun-ju and San-ho yield to a moment of intimacy as San-ho confesses his dream of relinquishing the war entirely and making a break with her into the Gobi Desert, where once he felt at one with the immutable North Star. We sense their attachment as sensitive, yet fleeting, as threats of deeper violence loom.

Meanwhile, the world stage becomes increasingly troubled. The US government looks on as North Korea has unveiled an enigmatic submarine of a type that appears superior to anything previously known. Suspicion develops regarding legitimacy, and the doubt only increases suspense. Suspicion mounts further as North Korea brings down an American airliner, yet the American president does not retaliate, and President Chae of South Korea holds firm as political posturing simmers just offstage.

Back in Seoul, Chang-hee comes back from his bed at the hospital with shocking news for Mun-ju. He comes and informs her that her late husband, Jun-ik, used to exchange letters with a mystery informant who supplied incriminating video evidence: Jun-ik receiving awards during a ceremony conducted in North Korea. With this news, suspicion is confirmed that Jun-ik used to work as a spy. San-ho also learns that Kang Han-na could very much be Stella Young, a notorious weapons dealer dealing with submarines, linking her closer with the plot.

As if betrayal weren’t enough, Mun-ju and San-ho’s safehouse is exposed. A leaked recording of their private conversations proves the house is bugged, shaking their trust in each other. The cruel twist? Mun-ju later realises the surveillance device was hidden in San-ho’s own necklace, the very token of closeness between them. San-ho confronts Ethan, believing him to be the culprit, only for Director Yoo to appear and brand San-ho a spy himself.

Yoo presents San-ho with a devil’s bargain: bring Mun-ju into captivity in exchange for a quiet existence with his grandmother. But once San-ho finds the necklace bug, the reality becomes painfully apparent—Mun-ju has been listening all along. Cornered and desperate, he struggles his way out of it, though by the time he gets back, Mun-ju has already run off into the night, aghast and questioning his loyalties. Her flight takes her from a terrifying new clue: evidence that the submarine exists and a cryptic invitation from the mystery texts.

Tempest Episode 7 Recap

Episode 7 of Tempest amplifies the backlash. San-ho interrogates Ethan, only to realise that Stella Young and not Kim Han-sang concocted the plot. Mun-ju returns with her fellow soldiers, Mi-ji and Chang-hee and presents new video evidence to Anderson, who finds that he has been outmanoeuvred into lifting the submarine threat. This shifts the geopolitical configuration as North Korea and China intensify their military assets and the U.S. contemplates war.

Determined to investigate the mysterious lead, Mun-ju sets out for Geumseol Port. But, encountering San-ho while she goes out for a scout, the mood with San-ho is heavy with treachery, Mun-ju cannot shake off the suspicion of trusting him, though he secretly presents the woman with a phone as a covert means of communication. Days later, a date with lawyer Kim Jose uncovers yet another level of unreliability: Jun-ik quietly built mind-boggling fortunes through Argentinean shell companies with Stella Young managing the transactions.

Meanwhile, Han-na steps out into the public arena brazenly with murder charges against Mun-ju and San-ho while guaranteeing her connection with Jun-ik. But she’s confronted by San-ho with an exposé of her as Stella Young, a defected North Korean diplomat’s daughter and a CIA informant. But the story doesn’t quite conclude as such since San-ho accuses her of the murder of Jun-ik and admits that there are two Stella Youngs. News surprises Han-na with shock, and she almost poisons herself before she’s restrained.

Chang-hee also confesses his own treachery: at Ok-seon’s prompting, he had eavesdropped on Mun-ju’s telephone. Treachery arises from every direction, and during one of Mun-ju’s outbursts of violence, she receives some tough realities about her background—her father had been suspected of spying and sent her mother abroad to the United States. Even her friend Du-jin turns out to be an NIS man determined to set her up. His treachery nearly kills her before San-ho steps in.

The climax takes place at Morae Port, where San-ho and Mun-ju try their best to retaliate. To Mun-ju’s astonishment, Ok-seon reveals herself as the second Stella Young, and Han-na betrays her also. Prior to definitive answers coming out, Director Yoo and his men show up, and a fierce shootout erupts. During the mayhem, Mun-ju and San-ho dive into the sea, sealing their tenuous relationship with yet another hopeless kiss while battling for survival.

Tempest Episode 6-7 Review

Episode 6 and Episode 7 of Tempest were genuinely the most emotional and intense yet for me. What initially stood out was how the love of Mun-ju and San-ho finally reached a boiling point. That still moment they had in Episode 6, where he confesses he doesn’t care about the war and wants to get out with her, really got me. For a moment there, I almost felt that they could just escape and live a happy life, but the fact that the show immediately derailed that with backstabbing and spying made it ten times more hurtful.

Their kiss at the end of Episode 7, with everything that happened, felt less like a lovely moment and more like two individuals grasping at each other during a tempest. It was heartbreaking and romantic at the same time.

What I also adored was how these episodes didn’t simply advance the romance; they advanced the mystery and backstabbing into high gear. That plot twist regarding Jun-ik being involved with North Korea shocked the heck out of me, yet what shocked me more was seeing Ok-seon materialise as Stella Young’s number two. I seriously didn’t see that coming. Now the melodrama is throwing so many disparate characters into this conspiracy theory that each and every scene has a possible trap feel to it. I caught myself looking twice as closely, attempting to discern the liars from those actually standing with Mun-ju.

San-ho’s path at this point of the story made me feel most conflicted. One minute I’m certain he’s the only one Mun-ju can count on, and the next I don’t believe anything that comes from his lips. What got my heart pounding during the entire exchange of him receiving a deal offered at the expense of betraying Mun-ju actually showed how much stress he’s under. However, the aspect of his coming back for her at the cliff as well as at the port made me consider that his affections are true, no matter his crude methods.

By Tempest Episode 7’s end, where everything breaks loose at Morae Port, I was fully hooked. The gunfight, the backstabbings, the shocking familial connections, all coalesced into a chaotic yet exciting mix. And just as we might assume Mun-ju has thrown in the towel with San-ho once and for all, jumping into the water together and exchanging that kiss at the end of the episode was the ultimate cliffhanger. It’s no longer a matter of survival; it’s a matter of whether love and trust can endure a world of deceit. With the war escalations intensifying and still more secrets yet to be uncovered, I genuinely cannot wait and see how Episode 8 escalates the stakes once more.
