Tempest Episode 4-5 Review: Following three exciting episodes that made us see Mun-ju’s life as a diplomat and how it comes crashing down with her husband’s assassination and the revelation of a mounting conspiracy, the political drama 북극성 from Disney+ is only getting more interesting. Now that San-ho is at her side, though, the threat only gets more complicated. Directed by Heo Myung-haeng and Kim Hee-won, written by Jeong Seo-Kyung and anchored by strong performances from Jun Ji-hyun and Gang Dong-won, the Korean drama is a tense but emotional ride over the course of its nine episodes. Now that Episodes 4 and 5 are out, here’s what happened and how the story is turning out.

In Kdrama Tempest episode 4, San-ho becomes an official part of Mun-ju’s life when she becomes his bodyguard. Instead of reassuring, he heightens her awareness that danger is never far away. He amps up that pervading sense of danger – and her odds of survival.

The manner in which he corrects her form or gently, with his own trembling hand, steadies hers blurs the line between survival lessons and an intimacy not exactly of the flesh. Episode 5 of Tempest opens on a sombre note with the abrupt death of Chang-hee, Jun-ik’s comrade, who is murdered before he has a chance to release the information he’d discovered. The assassination demonstrates that the cabal around Mun-ju is ruthless. With time running out, Mun-ju makes an uneasy alliance with San-ho and Mi-ji. Their partnership hangs by a thread and is born of necessity, not trust, but it’s what they’ve got.
The political turmoil is accompanied by individual anguish. Mun-ju discovers her husband had a second family and finds a concealed phone that makes it seem like he wasn’t the man she thought. Knowingly falsely accused, or just undeniably adulterous? This not knowing is what’s completely devastating to her, making her grief that much more acute.
In the meantime, as things come to light, her relationship with San-ho grows stronger. When they have another close shave, feelings overflow, and there is a kiss that feels both predestined and perilous. It isn’t a storybook moment but rather passion in the midst of chaos. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the episode closes on a creepy note — with a song over the radio, one associated throughout history with moments of conflict. Its cheery ubiquity in homes and cars suggests that conflict may already have arrived, even before it is formally announced.
Tempest Episode 4-5 Review
Both new chapters raise the stakes, emotionally and politically. It combines the larger conspiracy with personal struggles portrayed by its characters. I liked Mun-ju’s development while she felt stuck between grief and political machinations in previous instalments. Here she truly becomes someone who takes matters into her hands. Her taking a weapon and fighting back, both literally and metaphorically, was inspiring and one of the powerful moments of this show so far.
San-ho, on the other hand, became more complex as a protector. He’s not just a mercenary – he feels like a man taking care of his work and his feelings. His chemistry with Mun-ju is palpable, and their moments in these episodes add more heat to a very tense situation. The kiss in Tempest Episode 5 isn’t just a romantic gesture; it’s a move with consequences that will affect the fates of the entire drama.
The political storyline also keeps building its strengths. The moment in which the Chang-hee character is assassinated and the chilling use of music as a signal for war, these moments make this feel both thrilling and too close to reality. Tempest kdrama ep 4 builds Mun-ju’s fortitude, and ep 5 toys with it using betrayal and secrets, which makes you feel invested. The series isn’t too fast in a part of the action; in my opinion, it plays enough with suspense and character.

With four more episodes to go, the Disney+ show is positioned for an explosive second half. Mun-ju is no longer just a victim; she’s starting to claim her power, even as the new revelations about her late husband cast shadows over everything she thought she knew. The romance with San-ho adds a brittle layer of complication to the mix, as each choice they make becomes more precarious than the one before.
The story seems to be careening toward a collision of the personal and the political, and if Episodes 5 are any indication, what’s coming will be both devastating and exhilarating. I’m looking forward to tensing my stomach at how much Mun-ju will be forced to protect her country, and herself, as it heads into its deadliest ground yet.
