Sterling Point Review: Directed by Megan Park, Aurora Guerrero, and Andrew Ahn, the Prime Video series stars Ella Rubin as Annie, Amélie Hoeferle as Ramona, Keen Ruffalo as Connor, Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie as Ellis, Daniel Quinn-Toye as Rory, Bo Bragason as Oona, Mabel Strachan as Maple, Nikko Angelo Hinayo as Sully, alongside Jay Duplass, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Missi Pyle, and others.

Prime Video’s Sterling Point revolves around Annie, a very ambitious teenage girl, whose summer plans are ruined after not being able to enrol in the business course that she was working towards. Almost at the same time, Annie and her twin brother Connor discover that their long-lost grandfather, Gordon, has bequeathed them a small island known as Sterling Point. Inquisitive and eager to know more about the inheritance and about her mother, whom she never knew, Annie decides to travel to Canada. But little does Annie know that her trip is going to take many turns when she meets Ramona, a girl who is surprisingly related to Annie’s family.
What frustrated me most about Prime Video series Sterling Point was the fact that the mystery at the heart of the show makes it a really solid basis for the show, yet it seems as though the writers have more interest in focusing on romance than delving into the emotions surrounding the major discoveries of the show. Annie comes to the island with years of unanswerable questions regarding her mother, and Gordon’s advice to find out the truth about her past leaves her curious. The arrival of Ramona also takes the plot in a new direction.
Annie and Ramona were supposed to be at the heart of the story. From the outset, their interaction was marked by confusion, mistrust, and animosity, and this is quite understandable given the information they have been denied. They aren’t just strangers getting to know each other; they are two individuals struggling to grasp how the choices made by their elders shaped their life’s destiny. Some of their quiet moments make sense in light of how different they were in the experience of the family’s history.
However, there is not always enough time allowed for the development of these emotions within the series. Significant revelations are usually followed by love triangles, parties, or more lighthearted moments before the full emotional resonance of these realisations is exhausted. I was hoping for more exploration of how Annie and Ramona felt about these revelations within their own identities.
Annie has been portrayed as someone who always plans for the future. The fact that she abruptly decides to leave New York and visit Sterling Point may mark the beginning of an important metamorphosis. Her inability to join the summer program makes her feel directionless, but the island gives her the opportunity to rediscover herself without having the high expectations set by her own standards.
But the representation is inconsistent. Annie may be impulsive, manipulative, and hasty when making decisions about their impacts on other people, but this is what the show constantly asks us to believe: that she is an admired person by nature. This is another thing her mistakes might have turned out to make her into if the writers spent enough time analysing them. Some conflicts get settled way too soon for that.
The character of Ramona has an emotionally complex role due to her combination of anger and vulnerability. The relationship between Ramona and Oona is another emotional plot that makes the series interesting. However, Ramona’s emotions are not shown through her teenage attraction but rather her fear of rejection and inability to find her place in life. Nonetheless, the show uses love too much despite the possibility of developing the plot about her family issues.
However, the love triangle between Annie, Rory and Ellis gets much more screen time than it really deserves. Rory is associated with Annie’s past, whereas Ellis stands for something else in relation to the island. In theory, this presents a chance to demonstrate Annie struggling with her past against who she is turning into. Sadly, most of the time, the romantic drama does not come across as entirely believable.
The link between Annie and Rory seems especially hard to engage with as their interactions don’t generate any real chemistry. While Ellis is more interesting, his gentle and quiet demeanour doesn’t develop past what is typical for a teenager. The series constantly relies on scenes involving jealousy, confusion, and romantic mishaps, but at some point, they become boring due to the unresolved mystery of the family.
Connor also ends up being underutilised. The early relationship between Connor and Annie is fun because the squabbles between siblings seem very realistic and the carefree nature of Connor stands in contrast with the controlling nature of Annie. But once the show starts showing signs of having more depth to Connor’s personality, his growth takes a backseat.
The Sterling Point itself is one of the best features of this series. The lakeside location creates a summer feel to the series, and the island becomes an escape for the characters from their usual life. This is especially important when Annie starts making new friends and thinking about her future.
But the mood changes too abruptly. At one point, the characters are struggling with uncomfortable family secrets, and then, all of a sudden, the show switches to humour or even to caricatures of teenagers. The problem does not lie in the humorous elements since the characters of Oona, Sully, and Maple add some dynamics to the story. The problem is in the disconnect between emotions and humour.
Prime Video Sterling Point Review: Summing Up
There is enough intriguing content in the Prime Video Sterling Point series that it makes for an engaging viewing experience, but it fails to flesh out its most compelling narrative. It should have been focused on the mystery of Annie and Ramona’s family, how their lives are affected because of their parents’ decisions, and their struggle to understand each other. However, a lot of screen time was wasted on a forced love triangle and easily solved issues.
