Siren’s Kiss Episode 1-2 Review: Under the direction of Kim Chul-gyu, 세이렌 offers a re-creation of the Japanese drama The Inanimate World, with Park Min-young taking on the role of the enigmatic Han Seol-ah and Wi Ha-joon portraying Cha Woo-seok, a morally compromised insurance fraud investigator. The cast also includes Kim Jung-hyun as Paek Jun-beom alongside Han Joon-woo, Kong Seong-ha, Kim Geum-soon, Lee Elijah, Ha Seok-jin, and others.
Siren’s Kiss Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of Siren’s Kiss begins with a shocking scene of a desperate man maiming himself, with blood pouring onto an insurance document that seeks to profit from the man’s pain. This scene establishes the tone of the series, which is one of greed and exploitation. We are soon introduced to Cha Woo-seok, an insurance fraud investigator who is determined to stop individuals who profit from human pain. His latest catch is a man who made people maim themselves to collect their insurance claims. Instead of praise, he gets vilified for pursuing what he sees as a petty case.
The case becomes more personal when he visits a hospital to see a young girl who has been horribly abused, only to find that the mother is more concerned about collecting the insurance money than the daughter’s well-being, prompting him to threaten to sue her. We soon find out that the detective’s motivations come from a personal tragedy involving his sister, who died under mysterious circumstances, with the insurance money going to a husband he suspected of murdering his sister, but for whom there was a lack of evidence.
On the other side, there is Han Seol-ah, a celebrated auctioneer known for her coolness and unbeatable sales skills. While she enjoys the spotlight, many people envy her. After a successful auction, a wealthy client, Paek Jun-beom, approaches her, hinting at a shared history that Seol-ah prefers not to acknowledge. Her colleague, Yoon-ji, who was humiliated by Paek, harbours resentment towards him and plots revenge.
When Yoon-ji contacts Woo-seok, claiming to have vital information about the big insurance scam, tensions begin to build. However, just as she is about to reveal the information, she falls to her death from a terrace, coincidentally at the same time Woo-seok arrives. Woo-seok, suspicious of the sudden death, makes her the main suspect. He soon finds that the 700 million won policy of Seol-ah’s late fiancé was intended for her, despite the fact that the policy was supposedly cancelled before his death. When Woo-seok confronts Seol-ah, the tension between them sizzles. The scene ends with Woo-seok and Seol-ah locking gazes, leaving us wondering if Seol-ah was the one who pushed Yoon-ji to death.

Siren’s Kiss Episode 2 Recap
In Episode 2 of Siren’s Kiss, the mystery is probed further with a look back at Seol-ah’s past. A flashback shows her moment when she hears about her fiancé’s unexpected death. But her collected demeanour raises more questions than it answers. Meanwhile, in the present time, Woo-seok confronts her about the cancelled 700 million won policy. But Seol-ah plays it cool and denies any foul play on her part.
In Episode 1, the seed of doubt was sown. But in Episode 2, this seed of doubt becomes a pattern. Woo-seok begins to notice a pattern in Seol-ah’s dating history. Another man associated with Seol-ah, this time a doctor, also had a 700 million won insurance policy that named her as the beneficiary. But this policy was also cancelled before his death.
The tension is sustained in this episode through the small details that speak volumes. When Woo-seok visits Yoon-ji’s house, Seol-ah discreetly hides a calendar that records her whereabouts. But this speaks volumes about her guilt. Later on in the episode, it is revealed that Yoon-ji was also associated with Seol-ah’s former fiancé before he died. This adds another layer to the web of deception and betrayal that seems to surround Seol-ah.
But at the end of Siren’s Kiss Episode 2, Woo-seok figures out that there is a pattern to the deaths of these men associated with Seol-ah. He confronts her about this. But instead of stepping back, she takes a step forward and asks who could be next. Here, the lines between suspect and seductress, hunter and prey, are completely blurred.
Siren’s Kiss Episode 1-2 Review
The first two episodes of Siren’s Kiss establish its dark, unpredictable tone. What stuck with me, however, was the way it’s impossible to know what’s going to happen next. Just when I think I’ve got Seol-ah’s motives figured out, another curveball comes out of nowhere and flips everything on its head once more. That unpredictability, however, is exactly what a crime thriller needs.
The chemistry between Park Min-young and Wi Ha-joon is undeniable, and the tension between them is palpable, especially when they’re at odds, which seems to be the case more often than not. There’s a suspiciousness and anger between them, but also a pull that’s hard to ignore, especially when Woo-seok accuses her of things, and she retaliates with a poise that’s hard to ignore.
Park Min-young’s portrayal of Seol-ah, however, is the most captivating part of the series so far. She’s poised, beautiful, and collected, but there’s a hint of a hidden agenda lurking beneath the surface, making every move she makes seem suspicious, making one question if she’s a victim of bad luck or a mastermind pulling the strings from the very beginning.
Siren’s Kiss Review: Summing Up
Overall, the plot is interesting, the romance simmering beneath the layers of suspicion, and the crime scenes tightly woven. After two episodes, I can say that I’m certain of one thing: I have no idea what’s about to come next, and that, I believe, makes for a good crime thriller.
