Reverse Episode 1-2 Review: Screenwriter and director Lim Gun-joong brings a layered mystery to life in 리버스, starring Seo Ji-hye as Myo-jin, Go Soo as Jun-ho, and Kim Jae-kyung as Hee-su, alongside a strong supporting cast including Yoon Je-moon, Gu Sung-hwan, Im Won-hee and others.

Reverse Episode 1 Recap

Episode 1 of Reverse starts with a bang. In the opening scene, a man walks into a building, soon after which we see a frightened Myo-jin escape from the same building in a vehicle, her hands drenched in blood. The shock is clear on her face as she drives away, saying to herself how everyone is mad. Back at the scene, things only get worse. Another man finds a bleeding Hee-su in the building and tries to help her, but inadvertently sets off a bomb.

With Myo-jin getting in the car, the explosion shakes her up, resulting in an unfortunate incident that sends her to the hospital. After gaining consciousness, she finds herself dazed and unable to remember any facts related to herself. She is told that the man with her is her fiancé, by the name of Jun-ho. The nightmares of her being assaulted by some strange man begin to haunt her, making her feel insecure.

With time, the healing of Myo-jin is the major issue. Even with Jun-ho’s encouragement, she feels that there is something fundamentally wrong. The absence of any emotional attachment to him adds to her suspicions. The theory of trauma being the cause of her amnesia seems reasonable in light of the therapy sessions and medical findings, but she feels otherwise about her nightmares.

Once released from the hospital, Myo-jin tries to resume her regular routine, yet her environment seems strange and disturbing. Even minor stimuli, such as fire or particular places, trigger hazy recollections that only serve to make her more worried. However, matters become even worse when a chance meeting ends with someone referring to her as a murderer, casting a shadow of doubt over her. At the conclusion of Episode 1  of Reverse kdrama, Myo-jin is not merely confused anymore; she begins to wonder about herself and her ability to commit a heinous act.

Reverse Episode 2 Recap

Reverse Episode 2 adds layers to the plot as it gradually develops the world around Myo-jin and enhances her uncertainty. At one point, Myo-jin starts having suspicions about Jun-ho due to the loneliness she feels in her life since there is only his number stored in her brand-new phone. Though he gives reasons, it only makes her even more suspicious about him.

Resolved to get to the bottom of things, Myo-jin takes the matter into her own hands. Her attempts at discovering the past lead her to find evidence that shows that she had more to do with Hee-su than she had been told. Going to places that she knows leads her to recall events from her life with Hee-su.

Myo-jin is further drawn into a mystery when she comes to know of the allegations made against Jun-ho in connection with the murder of Chairman Choi. Meanwhile, it was also found out that Myo-jin had earlier hired a private investigator. This revelation brings the dark secrets and possible betrayals of the past into focus.

This all changes when Myo-jin meets other people who seem to know her, including one person who poses as a friend but is definitely up to no good. As she starts to piece together more information about her past, she realises that there might not be anyone else she can trust. At the end of episode 2 in Reverse, the plot changes from confusion to suspicion as Myo-jin inches closer to learning something that will drastically alter her entire perspective on her life.

Reverse Episode 1-2 Review

The plot of this drama is so gripping that one finds oneself completely absorbed in the element of disorientation the story throws one into. Disorientation plays a major part in making the story very engaging; it perfectly captures the character of Myo-jin in the Reverse kdrama ep 1. One loves the way the series does not feel the urge to make explanations for everything but allows all that happens to unfold gradually.

Nevertheless, though Reverse kdrama ep 2 broadens the story, one thing is for sure: there was an imbalance in the pace of the show. There were many different story lines presented, ranging from Jun-ho’s ambitions to the investigation being done, as well as the mysterious past of Myo-jin, and the dark characters involved in all of this, but they were not really developed at all yet.

What really caught my attention was the acting, especially the way Seo Ji-hye played the part of Myo-jin. She was realistic when she showed confusion, fear, and her suspicions, so it is easy for the audience to relate to her character despite the complexity of the plot. The character of Jun-ho, on the other hand, appears mysterious because he tries to hide things, making it difficult to develop a connection between him and Myo-jin.

Kdrama Reverse Review (Episode 1-2): Summing Up

All in all, I would have to say that the Korean drama Reverse is engaging with an interesting concept, but it definitely doesn’t feel like it is utilising everything that it could be. Given how much is left up in the air with the various elements at play, I am looking forward to seeing where the story takes me next.
