Taiwanese Series Million-Follower Detective Summary

The Netflix show Million Follower Detective starts with an explosive scene, which shows a famous influencer entering a police station while holding what looks like a gun. Detective Chen Chia-jen shoots his weapon during the pandemonium, but he realises that the “weapon” he used is actually a BB gun. The public space’s public display of chaos escalates into a viral internet sensation, which results in the complete destruction of Chia-jen’s standing, while online users assume the role of both judge and jury.

At the same time, the tarot card reader Witch Baba achieves online success through her predictions, which show remarkable accuracy. Her prediction abilities, which had previously established her credibility, enable her to become a prime suspect when the first murder victim’s connected influencers start dying according to her forecasts. Young cop Li Hsin-ping believes the connection between the two cases shows such strong evidence that proves they exist as actual connections. He decides to work together with Chia-jen in order to uncover more information about the case.

Who Was Witch Baba? How Did the Police Find Out About Her?

Witch Baba began as a mysterious tarot card reader whose doomsday predictions about influencer deaths consistently came true. Her internet persona went viral after she predicted a shooting, which mirrored the messy BB gun incident involving Chen Chia-jen. This strange connection alone brought the police into the picture. Li Hsin-ping was the first to question whether Witch Baba was simply a quirky internet meme.

As the investigation continued, leads pointed to Amy Hostel, which was strangely connected to Chia-jen’s estranged daughter, Chen You-jie. It was discovered that You-jie had created the Witch Baba account with a friend to create lighthearted, harmless tarot card videos. However, once the predictions began to come true with actual deaths, another person took over the account.

The predictions weren’t predictions at all. They were planned and deliberately set up to instil fear and confusion. Dr Kuo Ta-fu took over the Witch Baba account after kidnapping You-jie, manipulating the story and portraying events as fate rather than a revenge plot. The “accuracy” was not accurate because of magic.

Who Was the Real Killer in Million-Follower Detective?

Dr Kuo Ta-fu is responsible for killing these social media influencers who died. The reason Dr Kuo killed the influencers is that he suffered a loss in his family due to the recklessness of Lin Ting-yu and his influencer friends. One year prior to these deaths, Lin Ting-yu and his friends were riding scooters together and were recklessly exploding firecrackers at the same time. The firecrackers caused a crash into a vehicle whose owner was Dr Kuo, and his pregnant wife, who died in the car crash as a result of their reckless conduct.

The accident caused Dr Kuo insurmountable grief because he lost his wife and his unborn child. As a result of this accident, Dr Kuo suffered from extreme hatred and rage over the loss of his family and used the videos from the mannequin to identify the other influencers who were involved in the accident and created a plan to kill them as revenge.

When Dr Kuo killed the influencers, it was not a random act; he was “punishing” each influencer for what they did to his family. Dr Kuo had a plan to tie his killings to the predictions made by Witch Baba to create confusion and mislead the public from associating his killings with himself, and continue to kill his victims without any suspicion about him being the killer.

What Happened to Dr Kuo Ta-fu at the End of Million-Follower Detective?

The police slowly pieced together the link between the influencer group and the past accident. Lin Ting-yu’s involvement in the friend circle became crucial, helping investigators uncover what really happened that night. As inconsistencies in timelines and digital footprints surfaced, suspicion shifted toward someone with a deeply personal vendetta.

When the team discovered that Chen You-jie had been kidnapped, the urgency intensified. Chia-jen, Hsin-ping and Ting-yu worked together to track Dr Kuo down and rescue her. In a tense confrontation, they managed to apprehend him before he could carry out further harm. By the end of Million-Follower Detective, Dr Kuo is arrested and held accountable. Though his motives were rooted in grief, the law ultimately prevails, bringing closure to the revenge killings, and ultimately he dies by suicide in the hospital after ingesting poison, rather than living to serve punishment through the justice system.

How Was Ho Chen-wei Involved in the Accident?

Just when it seems the case is resolved, the Million Follower Detective delivers another twist. Ho Chen-wei, Chia-jen’s superior, was secretly involved in the original accident. On the night of the crash, Chen-wei was pursuing a drug informant. During a scuffle, he fired a shot that struck Dr Kuo’s car tyre, causing it to overturn. This revelation reframes the tragedy. While the influencers’ recklessness contributed, the fatal tipping point was Chen-wei’s gunshot. Even more disturbingly, he attempted to bury evidence to protect his career and reputation.

Who Killed Lin Po-lun? What Happened to Pin-hsuan?

Initially, the death of Lin Po-lun seemed to fit Witch Baba’s prophecy to the letter. However, the truth was much more tragic and complex. Lin Po-lun was stabbed by his girlfriend, Pin-hsuan, who had been suffering at the hands of Lin Po-lun’s abuse. When Witch Baba made the prophecy that Lin Po-lun would be stabbed, Pin-hsuan took it as a hint to purchase a knife. In a desperate act of trauma, she purchased the knife and stabbed Lin Po-lun out of fear that was planted by the prophecy.

Later, Pin-hsuan became the first suspect in Witch Baba’s murder due to the circumstantial evidence surrounding the events. Dr Kuo is dead, Ho Chen-wei’s corruption is revealed, and the truth about Witch Baba has come to the surface. Also, Chen Chia-jen and his daughter have begun rebuilding their relationship.
