Food, in this series, is more than just sustenance; it’s a language of resistance, intimacy and healing. Whether it is Ji-yeong’s inspired plates that reinvigorate Yi Heon or the opulent banquets that represent the cutthroat politicking of the court, every meal becomes an act of rebellion or devotion. The food motif provides a way for the drama to effortlessly address power, gender, and class, underpinning its lush fantasy in a taste we all can understand.

As the episodes mount, betrayals accumulate, alliances change and Ji-yeong’s desire to somehow get back to her own time clashes with her increasing feelings for Yi Heon. As the story moves toward its climax, the palace is aflame with conspiracy and its characters are caught between ambition, loyalty and love.

How Do Queen Dowager In-ju and Im Song-jae Die?

In the Bon Appetit Your Majesty episode 11, Queen Dowager In-ju’s death was tragic. For much of the series, she carried herself as the respected matriarch of the palace, yet the truth of her past sins finally came to light as she was the one who was implicated for killing Yi Heon’s mother by poisoning her. And when she is struck down by Prince Jesan in the king’s cheoyongmu outfit, a chilling symbolic act — she doesn’t die at the hands of her grandson, whom she once betrayed as an infant, but through a staged scenario that will make it look like it was the king who became a murderer. Her death is one of the most excruciating endings.

In Im Song-jae’s case, the burden is loyalty and self-sacrifice. The trap is already in place when Yi Heon discovers him tied up at Salgoji Forest. In a heart-wrenching scene, Song-jae intercepts the arrows intended for his king, knocking him down and protecting him with his own body.

Unlike In-ju, who has already paid with his life (and how), he doesn’t die with shame or covered in lies—his death is the epitome of loyalty to the king he served. His emotional sacrifice contrasts sharply with the palace’s web of betrayals. The fact that he’s tied to the pyre, but still tries to protect Yi Heon with his life, shows us how costly loyalty is in a world ruled by ambition and betrayal.

What Happened to Prince Jesan at the End of Bon Appetit Your Majesty?

Obsessed with power, Prince Jesan knew no scruples about others who trustingly surrounded him. It was not out of loyalty that he was trying to get Jin-myeong on the throne, but because Yi Heon was weakened by it, and Jesan could make himself a puppetmaster and even become the king. Jesan’s was a scheme, bitter and desperate for affirmation—he could never be the light, but he could control from darkness by deception and shadows. This rendered his ascent empty from the outset, because it was constructed not on loyalty or leadership but upon betrayal and greed.

His own machinations had finally caught up with him. It wasn’t a political fight anymore, but one of survival and love when Jesan faced Yi Heon. His act of cruelty ended up getting Ji-young injured, and that was when our reserved Yi Heon snapped. Jesan’s death did not merely serve as punishment for his disloyalty, but was the tragic demonstration that unbridled ambition devours itself. Jesan’s end was just the final act of betrayal, nothing in it but grief and the taste of what he’d made everyone pay for his selfish chase.

Yes, in Bon Appetit Your Majesty episode 12, Ji-yeong eventually found the Mangunrok, but it was more than a book. It became Yi Heon’s record of every dish she’d made, a story of their connection that extended beyond food to love and trust and the minutes they spent together. Heartbreaking and affirming both for Ji-yeong to find out that Yi Heon had written it with her in mind, because she’d never been alone in the feelings, because he’d clung to her presence as tenaciously as she did his. The Mangunrok, thus, became a ship of memory and devotion that stretched beyond time.

Her return to the future arrived at the worst possible time — after she’d thrown herself between Jesan’s blade and Yi Heon. When she was about to die, the Mangunrok kicked in and returned her to her original time rather than have her story play out tragically.

The Mangunrok had fallen silent, and now in history it was said that Yi Heon had disappeared into oblivion. The devastation of this parting was so great that Ji-yeong’s scar bristled for a high-school crush she looked back on with despair.

And then, miraculously and heart-wrenchingly, Yi Heon showed up in her world — unchanged, not as a reincarnation but as the one man who had once vowed to find her again. And now, his sudden appearance defied logic, but in the context of their journey, it also ultimately served as confirmation that their relationship was never constrained to the laws of time.
