Agent from Above Review: Created by Xing Zi and directed by Donnie Chun-Yu Lai, the Netflix series stars Kai Ko as Han Chieh, Wang Po-chieh as the enigmatic Third Crown Prince, alongside Hsueh Shih-ling, Buffy Chen, Johnny Yang, Chen Yi Wen and others. Adapted from the novel Chi Shen (乩身), the show runs for 8 episodes, each approximately 45 minutes long.

Taiwanese series Agent from Above centres on Han Chieh, who has the role of serving the Third Crown Prince as a spirit medium to atone for his past sins. With the power of the deity, Han Chieh tries to deal with the supernatural occurrences that display an ominous trend. People die in mysterious conditions, and the spirits involved are not acting on their own. What seems like random events turn out to be connected to a larger plot concerning Chen Chi-sha and his protégé Wu Tien-chi, which has connections to something more sinister—a plot to harness the dark powers and affect the balance between the human and spirit worlds.
Netflix’s Agent From Above naturally incorporates Taiwanese folklore into the storyline. While the show does not simply use mythology as the background for the series, it incorporates it into the storyline in such a way as to give the world its own identity. From spiritual practices to divine buildings, everything ties in quite nicely without becoming overly complicated for those who are not familiar with Taiwanese culture.
Kai Ko shines in the role of Han Chieh, who is more than simply supernatural. There is an emotional undertone to the character at all times because of the guilt and obligation he feels. What makes the transformation of the character interesting is the fact that the character does not start off as an altruistic hero. Instead, the impression one gets is that the character is going about his business because he has to, because he does not wish for his parents to suffer.
The relationship between Han Chieh and the Third Crown Prince is arguably one of the more entertaining aspects of the Netflix series Agent From Above. For instance, the relationship between the two characters in the beginning is arguably transactional in nature. There is a sense of tension in the relationship, implying that neither party was comfortable with the situation. There was arguably a sense of tension in the manner in which the two characters interacted with one another. However, the relationship between the two characters arguably undergoes a transformation in the manner in which they relate to one another. When the situation was most pressing, the two characters arguably stood by one another like a shield.

The other relationship which contributes a lot of value to the story is the relationship which exists between Chieh and Zhang Min, the criminal police officer. This character brings a very realistic aspect into the story, and his relationship with Chieh is very realistic. To begin with, Zhang Min is very sceptical about the supernatural in the story, but as he becomes more and more involved in the world in which Chieh moves, his relationship with him becomes stronger. It is very interesting to see the development of the relationship between the two.
The major conflict with Wu Tien-chi and the Demon King is where the Agent From Above series really gets going. Instead of everything being random events, everything is connected with this major idea of spirits being used as tools, people being used, and the overall idea of attaining power over incredible amounts of it. This really gives the series some direction and makes things escalate.
The Netflix Taiwanese series Agent from Above does a good job visually in terms of presenting a powerful supernatural atmosphere. The action scenes are quite interesting as well. The drama also has an emotional plot that is interesting to watch. Guilt, redemption, and human relationships are big parts of the emotional. Chieh’s journey is not only about fighting evil, but it is also about finding his purpose as a person. The emotional plot will help counterbalance the more action-heavy parts.
The only thing I found lacking was the depth some of the supporting characters don’t receive, as well as some moments in the story where things feel a bit too predictable. Nonetheless, those issues don’t detract too much from the overall experience.

In the end, Agent from Above delivers an interesting mix of action, mythology, and character-centric storytelling. It is able to succeed the most in delivering an entertaining and engaging narrative with interesting characters, their relationships, and an immersive world. It is a series that will hold your attention from beginning to end.
