Wolf King Review: Netflix’s new animated series is directed by Tom Brass, and features a strong voice cast, including Ceallach Spellman as Drew, Louis Landau as Trent Ferran, Nina Barker-Francis as Whitley, Paterson Joseph as Bergan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith as Hogan and Colin Ryan as Vincent. The show is based on Wereworld, a book series by Curtis Jobling, and has eight episodes. It follows a boy named Drew Ferran, who discovers that he is the last werewolf and the rightful king of a land governed by shape-shifting lords. But with the Lion Lords ruling the land, Drew is forced to fight back and take his rightful place as the true heir, unveiling his real powers along the way.

Wolf King Review

Netflix’s Wolf King hooks you from the get-go with its breakneck story. In other words, things happen quickly — there’s little time to breathe because the adventure keeps on going. Some shows pause for emotional beats, but here, even when characters discuss their feelings, something big is happening in the background. It spices the show up very well, and I was never bored watching it.

There were occasions, however, when it seemed to move too quickly. There were times I wished the show took a few more beats to explain things or let the characters’ emotions land. But I also liked how it never dragged or stretched out. This is definitely the series to watch if you love action and fantasy in a story.

The entire “lost heir who must battle for his throne” plot isn’t new. Even if you have watched fantasy TV shows or films, you’re likely familiar with Wolf King. It made me think a little of Game of Thrones, especially with various clans of animals vying for control. Just because a story has been told before doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. The Wolf King series is successful in making the characters interesting, and the world they inhabit is action-packed.

Parts of the story were predictable; however, I did not care, as the writer executed the narrative well. The power struggles, backstabbings, and epic battles reeled me in. Even though I knew what was coming in the story, I still wanted to see how it all played out.

Another one of Wolf King’s finest assets is its animation. The show is stylized in a way that it’s 3D animation, but in certain sequences, it can resemble a painting. I love how the characters were made, especially the animal lords. All of them seem powerful with distinct capabilities. The lion, bear, and shark characters left the most memorable impression on me, probably because they looked super tough and awesome.

The fighting scenes are well done too. The movements are fluid, and the battles feel immersive. Sometimes that can make animated shows make the fights feel a little light, but here, you feel the impact of every hit. Wolf King’s biggest highlights are the action scenes.

The animated Series Wolf King is considerably darker than your average kids’ show. There are serious moments, and at least a couple of scenes border on scary. But it never gets too dark — it’s just the right amount, I think, for a teenage audience. It is also a mix of adventure, drama and action, which is why I believe adults can have fun watching it as well.

The emotional moments were fine, but I thought they could be a bit stronger. There were moments when I wanted to engage more deeply with the characters, but the story is told at such a fast pace that it doesn’t always spend enough time with its characters to explore deeper emotions. Nevertheless, the show’s overall tone is entertaining, and its story — what’s going on — holds your attention.

And the voice actors really did well in this series. As Drew, Ceallach captures both the fear and bravery of his character nicely. The casting of the other actors is equally spot-on, making the characters come to life. I also enjoyed the villains’ voices, as they were so strong and intimidating. Voice acting is one of the key aspects of animated shows, and Wolf King certainly nailed it.

Summing Up

Wolf King is an amusing and thrilling fantasy series that features plenty of fight scenes, solid animation, and an intriguing plot. Unoriginal yes, but at least it does what it says on the tin: adventure, combat, and the journey of a hero. If you like stories that move quickly and feature cool characters and intense fights, I think you’ll love this show. It’s really worth it, and I hope it gets a second season!

2025 Wolf King is now streaming on Netflix.
