The Perfect Lie Episode 1-2 Review: Directed by Jo Yeong-min, the Disney+ Korean drama 라이어 stars Seo Hyun-jin as Kang Ji-seon and Yoo Yeon-seok as Min Jun-ho. The supporting cast includes Ok Ja-yeon as Lee Hwa-young, Im Sung-jae as Park Seok-gu, Kim Ji-hyun as Kang Ji-eun, Lee Chun-hee as Kim Hyeong-su and others.

The Perfect Lie Episode 1 Recap

In episode 1 of The Perfect Lie, Ji-seon is introduced as an unorthodox teacher in terms of her approach to educating kids. According to Ji-seon, children need to know how to express their feelings and become good adults by knowing everything about themselves instead of learning from the textbooks alone. When she finds out that Hyun-soo, one of her students, is being bullied, she helps him without anyone noticing.

On the other hand, Jun-ho is portrayed as a charming surgeon and a loving single parent. He has lost his wife and has to take care of his son Hyun-soo along with the pressures of his career. When Ji-seon makes a mistake in assuming him as an author and asks him to talk to her students, he handles it with ease and gives a speech about the heart. She develops interest in him after she observes him teaching.

Their interaction starts when Hyun-soo lands himself in trouble after trying to sell fake shoes over the Internet. Ji-seon gets a call from the cops and deals with the matter herself, ensuring that the boy knows the mistake he has committed. Furthermore, she shares how she lost her own parents during her teenage years, giving Hyun-soo the impression that somebody can understand him. When Jun-ho comes over to the school to talk about the matter, he confesses that he is having difficulty connecting with his son.

Eventually, Jun-ho asks Ji-seon out, although she rejects him at first since he is the father of one of her pupils. But when they come across each other once again while taking a stroll along the beach, she agrees to have coffee with him. Their first date turns out great, and it ends up with both of them spending some time at the residence of Ji-seon. However, the next morning Ji-seon wakes up unwell with a difficult time trying to recall everything that had taken place the previous day.

In a surprising twist at the end of The Perfect Lie Episode 1, Ji-seon goes to visit her sister Ji-eun and tells her about how Jun-ho sexually molested her. According to her, she does not remember what happened after they came back to her place and feels that something was put in her drink. Ji-eun is surprised, but Ji-seon reports the whole matter to the police. Jun-ho is then arrested in the hospital, and he has no idea that he was being accused of anything. They both tell the police different stories regarding their experience.

The Perfect Lie Episode 2 Recap

In episode 2 of The Perfect Lie, Jun-ho is being interrogated further regarding the allegations made by Ji-seon. According to him, they had been drinking wine together, kissed each other and went into her room, thinking that they were building an intimate relationship with each other. However, Ji-seon believes that she doesn’t remember giving consent to that act. While the investigation is still ongoing, the lawyer friend of Jun-ho tells him to think outside the box.

The ramifications of the allegation start impacting both families immediately. Ji-seon resides with her sister while trying to go back to her teaching work, while the wife of Jun-ho finds out about the allegation. Hyun-soo ends up in a scuffle at school owing to an insult from one of his classmates regarding his father’s alleged crime. The police carry out an investigation into their stay, going through the evidence collected from a medical angle, witnesses from the restaurant, and CCTV footage. But despite the lack of any evidence to prove Ji-seon’s claim about her being drugged, she continues to believe otherwise.

As Ji-seon confronts Jun-ho, he keeps saying that he did not know that the sexual activity was not consensual. His reason that Ji-seon never told him to stop is what infuriates her even more. The police then decide to conclude the case without prosecuting Jun-ho due to lack of evidence. Ji-seon later receives some disturbing news about the death of Jun-ho’s wife involving an overdose of controlled drugs.

The case now moves on a new path as the police suggest a polygraph test for both Ji-seon and Jun-ho, which they both agree to take. In the course of this test, Ji-seon comes forward saying that she had been sexually abused when she was younger, but she cannot recall the identities of those who had done so, and she is still living with that memory. Jun-ho, for his part, recalls an event in which he had molested a kitten, and he felt sexually attracted towards Ji-seon.

The Perfect Lie Episode 2 ends by providing the polygraph test results, which categorise Jun-ho’s answers as being true and Ji-seon’s as being lies. The detective informs them that the results indicate Ji-seon to be the liar when it comes to their story. This totally alters the course of the mystery, leaving the viewer wondering if Ji-seon is keeping something from them, if Jun-ho is more complex than he seems, or if the truth is more complex than what the test indicates.

The Perfect Lie Episode 1-2 Review

The Perfect Lie K-drama starts off with a story that has already sparked our curiosity about what will happen next. This drama’s first episode features two characters, Ji-seon and Jun-ho, who appear to have connected in such a way that one can tell they share something unique between them. But then again, it takes an unfortunate turn when Ji-seon claims that she was sexually assaulted by Jun-ho. Definitely, there are so many things for us to consider from this drama, and I cannot wait to see what else it brings.

At the same time, the acting has made watching The Perfect Lie ep 1 enjoyable. Seo Hyun-jin has really done well portraying the emotions of Ji-seon, especially since she is trying to figure out what has happened to her. In contrast, Yoo Yeon-seok has portrayed the character of Jun-ho in such a way that it is hard to know whether or not to trust him. His attractive nature and the fact that he takes care of his child make the allegation even harder to take in. The secondary characters have also provided more depth to the plot, especially Ji-eun.

As expected, The Perfect Lie ep 2 continues to raise more questions for us to investigate regarding what really took place between Ji-seon and Jun-ho. But not only have we gotten more questions in today’s episode; it seems that some of the light has shifted onto Jun-ho and his background, which now makes us wonder if there is anything about him that we do not know yet. His wife’s death and the missing medicine have added some flavour, while the polygraph results raise even more questions.

On the other hand, Ji-seon’s actions may be quite perplexing sometimes, but in my opinion, this is what makes her such an intriguing character. In fact, there is something that she does not understand herself, and this fact alone makes her story quite poignant. Jun-ho is certain that their encounter was consensual, which makes it hard to take his side. I really like the fact that the series does not provide us with obvious evidence that we should choose sides in this matter from the start.

Disney+ Kdrama The Perfect Lie Review: Summing Up

Overall, the series so far has had an excellent beginning in terms of the first two episodes. I found the transition of the storyline from an apparently sweet love affair to an unsettling mystery quite interesting, as the emotional bond among the characters has remained intact. The climax of Korean drama The Perfect Lie episode 2 has definitely sparked my curiosity as regards the development of the events, considering that it was revealed that Ji-seon told the lie as per the polygraph test results.
