The Husband Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of The Husband opens with Kang Tae-ju and Ko Se-yun as an inseparable and blissful couple who are going rock climbing on their first date. There seems to be a perfect understanding between the two as they smile together and dream of having a bright future. It then goes a few years ahead to reveal that their happiness and harmony have since vanished. They have since been working in the same hospital, with Tae-ju working as a popular surgeon while Se-yun works as the director of the hospital under the influence of her father.

Their personal issues soon reflect in their work environment. Tae-ju decides to prioritise a patient who needs immediate surgery over the very crucial VIP patient because of his surgery. This decision gives rise to some differences between Tae-ju and Se-yun, along with her father. They take it from a business angle as opposed to the medical angle taken by Tae-ju. Although Tae-ju makes apologies for the problems his decision causes, Se-yun is not ready to forgive him for the grudges she has harboured against him for quite a while.
Outside of work, Tae-ju tries to fix everything. With encouragement from his colleague Chi-woong, he tries to cook food in an attempt to talk. However, the talk ends up turning out to be another heated argument. Se-yun accuses him of neglecting their marriage, and glimpses of tragedy in their past suggest that perhaps the two had suffered an unfathomable loss. Frustrated and emotionally drained, Tae-ju finally asks her for a divorce, only for her to reject the suggestion.

But things do get more complicated when it comes to Tae-ju’s celebratory party for his clinical trial success. At the event, Se-yun mentions his divorce to everyone, embarrassing Tae-ju and forcing him to leave the event. Tae-ju goes to meet his parents, and his mother, unaware of all that has been going on, reminds him to take care of his wife anyway. In the evening, while Tae-ju was drinking with his elder brother and complaining about his failed marriage, he got himself a designated driver to drive him back home.
However, the next morning dawns just like any other day until Tae-ju gets an unexpected phone call from the driver. The man asks for money for doing what Tae-ju had asked him to do last night. But Tae-ju is clueless about this request as the kidnapping case begins for him when he finds out that Se-yun is missing. The kidnapper gives him an extremely horrific video in which Tae-ju sees himself drunk and asking the driver to kill his wife.

With this video comes a shocking ransom of one billion won, along with a threat not to call the police ever again. In order to save Se-yun, Tae-ju starts searching for help, but to no avail since he does not have his dashcam videos, cannot locate the driver, and his finances are nowhere near the ransom. At the end of the kdrama The Husband Episode 1, we see that when Tae-ju reaches the meeting place with the money he has, he is shocked by a taser attack.
The Husband Episode 2 Recap
Episode 2 of The Husband starts off right from where the previous episode left off, after Tae-ju becomes unconscious. In a flashback, we learn that prior to encountering the kidnapper, he was desperately trying to gather as much money as he could after failing to reach out to his family members. However, nothing will be able to help him when he awakens in a place he does not know and finds that his ransom money is gone. He then runs after the kidnapper with the help of some scared teenagers, but only manages to find his ransom burning in an open field.

The other aspect of the episode entails a reflection on how Tae-ju and Se-yun met when they were students at the university. While Tae-ju was shy and reserved, Se-yun boldly approached him and took the initiative in their relationship. The pleasant memories are in sharp contrast to the difficult situation that the two are now going through because of their deteriorating marriage.
Having run out of solutions, Tae-ju finally decides to inform the parents of Se-yun of the kidnapping. But he keeps one thing a secret: he videotaped that captures him asking for the kidnapping while under the influence of alcohol. All this time, even though it was agreed not to contact the police, the mother of Se-yun contacted the police secretly. The investigators arrive soon and begin planning a rescue operation while interrogating Tae-ju. In the meantime, Se-yun wakes up in a locked room where she finds chains to prevent her from escaping. She meets another terrified woman who is also kidnapped.

In the course of further investigation, the cops try to track down the kidnapper through video chats, but he turns out to be much smarter than was initially thought. He manages to play everything to his advantage while keeping his position hidden using technical skills. In the course of one particularly heated video chat, even Se-yun’s mom tries to pay more money if her daughter is released alive, thinking that the kidnapper might succumb to the temptation of money. But the kidnapper beats Se-yun right in front of the camera.
This is where the case takes a huge turn when the kidnapper reveals the tape recording of Tae-ju asking for his wife’s kidnapping. This completely changes the course of the case, showing Tae-ju as the main suspect instead of a man who was doing all this just to save his wife. He gets arrested instantly, despite saying that he is innocent. During the time of interrogation at the police station, he tries to run away due to a momentary lapse on their part. At the end of The Husband Episode 2, an unknown person comes from nowhere and says that he knows the whole truth about the kidnapping.

The Husband Episode 1-2 Review
Having watched the first two episodes of The Husband Korean drama, I must say that I am totally hooked on how the story will progress from there. Something that seems to be about a drifting marriage soon turns out to be an intense kidnapping story that never lets up for a second. I love the fact that the show does not spoon-feed you but makes you wonder what is happening in the story with each new episode. I cannot wait to see who the brains are behind the kidnapping.
Something that has really caught my attention is the way in which this Disney+ kdrama The Husband, manages to strike an excellent balance between emotion and suspense. Before Se-yun disappears, one already feels the anguish and separation between her and Tae-ju, and what transpires afterwards only becomes more tragic because of this pre-existing knowledge. At the same time, the use of flashbacks has been done perfectly so that they do not interfere with the suspense but rather provide brief insights into their past together.

As far as performance goes, Namkoong Min gives an outstanding portrayal of Tae-ju. You feel sorry for him, but at the same time, wonder if there is something more hidden beneath his mask. Lee Seol deserves equal admiration, even having very little dialogue after the kidnapping, she is able to express her fear, desperation and determination in such a way that is almost tangible. Both Kim Dae-myung and Lee Sang-hee give splendid performances of desperate parents searching for their daughter, and at the same time doubting their son.
Disney+ The Husband Review: Summing Up
In the first two episodes, the show has managed to do exactly what it should have—it has managed to pique my interest for more. Every time I thought I knew something, the show surprised me with yet another twist that made me look at things from a whole different angle. The surprise ending in the second episode especially manages to leave more questions than answers in me, and I am sure that there are going to be many more twists coming my way in the near future. Given the level of anticipation that kdrama The Husband is managing to create within me, there is no question about how thrilling it would turn out by its end.
