The American Experiment Review: Directed by Brian Knappenberger and executive produced by Tom Hanks, the Netflix docuseries tells the story of the creation of America through five episodes. It is a series which is based on the narrative of actors such as Martin Sheen, and also historians, authors, politicians, and analysts who explain the story of America’s creation.

As someone who is not American, my perspective while watching Netflix’s The American Experiment differs considerably from the main target audience of the series. Most of the history mentioned is known in general, including George Washington, the Declaration of Independence, and the Revolutionary War, yet there are quite a few details that I did not know before. However, being an outsider in terms of nationality made me appreciate the movie because I am not driven by patriotism. Instead, I wanted to see how the colonies became a country and what questions raised back then are still relevant today.
Netflix’s The American Experiment docuseries starts with colonial America, where the discontentment towards the British government slowly becomes an urge for freedom from the ruling authorities. Further on, the series depicts all the important events of the American Revolution, featuring prominent figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and many others whose contributions shaped the destiny of the nation. Nonetheless, the series does not restrict itself to focusing only on the successes of the war and political struggle. On the contrary, it also highlights the controversies inherent in the initial values of the American nation.
What stands out the most about The American Experiment documentary is the way it is presented. It is not an easy task for any historical documentary to present century-old facts in a vivid manner, but it manages to do this rather satisfactorily. The battle reenactments are done with such good staging that they never come across as too much of an exaggeration.
The employment of maps proves especially effective. Every time the documentary turns to military operations and strategies, the visual breaks make it easier for us to comprehend what might seem unclear. For those audience members who do not possess much information about American history, these segments are one of the simplest methods of understanding the course of the Revolutionary War.
The historians’ and writers’ contributions have added a lot to me, too. It helps add great depth to the film and keeps it from just being a chronology of events. One of the best moments comes when the experts talk about the uncertainties that come with the American experiment. It is quite easy for one to look back and say that independence was a certainty, but it wasn’t.
Still, the main problem that can be identified lies in its attempt to make clear links between the past and the present. Even though the approach used by the documentary can be justified in some way due to its attempts to explain how history affects the current political situation, it does so rather aggressively.

In terms of including contemporary politicians in the Netflix docuseries The American Experiment, the balance starts becoming slightly uneven. Despite the political affiliation of the politicians, at times, they are somewhat distracting due to the fact that their presence distracts from the interesting historical information provided. It is obvious that the documentary wants to prove that the discussions of the 18th century remain relevant now, but it sometimes fails to give credit to the audience’s understanding of the connections.
The other issue is the pace. In this series, where each episode lasts more than one hour, The American Experiment requires considerable time. The information is plentiful; however, sometimes there was too much information delivered in such a condensed manner. It is informative, but it is not necessarily entertaining at times. Some parts of this documentary can resemble a long lecture in class rather than a streaming series.
Having said all that, I never thought that time was wasted. Though the film gets pretty dense, there is always some value to what is being talked about. The series does succeed in portraying the birth of America as a complex and contradictory experience rather than a simple story of success and heroes.

Overall, The American Experiment is definitely a good documentary series that provides a rather accessible insight into one of the most important epochs in American history. As an Indian audience member, I must admit that it was good to get acquainted with the events that had formed a superpower in the world. However, the way some of those events were framed in the context of current political realities somewhat detracted from the quality of viewing. Overall, the documentary is informative, well-done, and insightful at times; however, it lacks a sense of pace and often relies too much on modern-day analogies.
